Evaluation of Vision in Gnathological and Orthodontic Patients with Temporomandibular Disorders: A Prospective Experimental Observational Cohort Study.

OBJECTIVES: Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs), orthodontic diseases, and vision dysfunctions seem to be strictly related. The purpose of this study was to prove the relationship, to evaluate the prevalence and the distribution of vision defects in dysfunctional and orthodontic patients, and to establish the type of the relationship. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 100 patients with TMDs were selected and studied through epidemiological analyses of the following factors: gnathological parameters (temporomandibular joint pathologies according to Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Diso

Gait kinematics during walking in children with impaired binocular vision due to amblyopia or strabismus.

Impaired binocular vision early in life from amblyopia or strabismus is related to lower scores than controls for walking on standardized tests of motor ability. However, standardized tests do not assess gait kinematics, which may provide a better understanding of motor deficits. This study investigated gait kinematics while walking in children with amblyopia or strabismus. Children ages 7-13 years with amblyogenic factors (13 anisometropia, 8 strabismus) were enrolled in the amblyopia or strabismus (AS) group (15/21 had current amblyopia). An age-similar group of 33 controls with normal visio

Visual Dysfunction after Repetitive Mild Traumatic Brain Injury in a Mouse Model and Ramifications on Behavioral Metrics.

Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality with a poorly understood pathophysiology. Animal models have been increasingly utilized to better understand mTBI and recent research has identified visual deficits in these models that correspond to human literature. While visual impairment is being further characterized within TBI, the implications of impaired vision on behavioral tasks commonly utilized in animal models has not been well described thus far. Visual deficits may well confound behavioral tests that are believed to be isolated to cognitive functionin

Preserving Vision: Rethinking Burn Patient Monitoring to Prevent Orbital Compartment Syndrome.

Burn patients receiving aggressive fluid resuscitation are at risk of developing orbital compartment syndrome (OCS). This condition results in elevated orbital pressures and can lead to rapid permanent vision loss. Risk factors and monitoring frequency for OCS remain largely unknown. A retrospective review was therefore conducted of admitted burn patients evaluated by the ophthalmology service at an American Burn Association verified Burn Treatment Center. Demographic, burn, examination, and fluid resuscitation data were compared using two-sided t-tests, Fisher's exact tests, and linear regres

Predicting on-road driving performance and safety in healthy older adults.

INTRODUCTION: This study evaluated the ability to predict the on-road driving of older drivers using a battery of laboratory-based instruments. METHODS: The Roadwise Review, a brief Hazard Perception Test and several tests of vision were given to 65 cognitively healthy, licensed older drivers (M = 74 years, SD = 9 years). They also participated in a standardized driving assessment of approximately 18 km, along a mixed residential and commercial route. RESULTS: Raw scores on the Roadwise Review did not predict accumulated points, or automatic disqualifications, but could predict who would pas

Nurse-led diabetic retinopathy screening: a pilot study to evaluate a new approach to vision care for Canadian Aboriginal peoples.

Diabetic retinopathy is the most common cause of new cases of blindness and is pandemic among Aboriginal people around the world. To reduce health inequities, accessible vision screening among these high-risk populations is essential. To assess cardio-metabolic co-morbidities associated with type 2 diabetes and the use of a portable fundus camera as a novel approach for convenient, earlier and more accessible vision screening for Aboriginal peoples living with type 2 diabetes in northern and remote Canadian communities. This quantitative pilot study screened participants diagnosed with type 2

A Case of Incomplete Heerfordt Syndrome Diagnosed Following Fever Onset.

Heerfordt syndrome is a rare clinical manifestation of sarcoidosis characterized by a combination of facial nerve palsy, parotid gland swelling, anterior uveitis, and fever. The classical (complete) form presents with all four features, whereas the incomplete form requires the presence of at least two of the following: anterior uveitis, parotid enlargement, or facial nerve palsy. Parotid gland involvement is often bilateral, and uveitis may cause ocular symptoms such as blurred vision. A 78-year-old female presented with fever, a one-year history of facial paralysis, and blurred vision that wa

Patient-specific finite element analysis of human corneal lenticules: An experimental and numerical study.

The number of elective refractive surgeries is constantly increasing due to the drastic increase in myopia prevalence. Since corneal biomechanics are critical to human vision, accurate modeling is essential to improve surgical planning and optimize the results of laser vision correction. In this study, we present a numerical model of the anterior cornea of young patients who are candidates for laser vision correction. Model parameters were determined from uniaxial tests performed on lenticules of patients undergoing refractive surgery by means of lenticule extraction, using patient-specific mo

Glare and mesopic vision before and after cataract surgery.

Glare and mesopic vision were tested before and after cataract surgery in addition to the standard visual acuity measurement. Quantitative data on the amount of improvement in these functions are presented. Preoperatively, glare and mesopic vision were reduced to 20/200 or less in most patients. Postoperatively, a statistically significant improvement in the three visual functions measured was found in all five octaves of presurgical visual acuity.

Hypofractionated stereotactic radiation therapy for optic nerve sheath meningiomas: A single-center experience and preliminary results.

BACKGROUND: Primary optic nerve sheath meningioma (pONSM) causes progressive vision loss. Surgery carries high morbidity (~ 94% visual impairment), and conventional fractionated radiotherapy (CFRT; 50.4-54 Gy) requires an extended course. Given the low α/β ratio of meningiomas (~ 3.76 Gy), we investigated hypofractionated stereotactic radiotherapy (hypo-FSRT; 40 Gy/10 fx) as an alternative. METHODS: This retrospective STROBE-compliant study (2016-2023) included imaging-confirmed pONSM patients (PS 0-2) unsuitable for or refusing surgery/CFRT. Hypo-FSRT delivered via gamma-ray system with ther

Behavioral phenotypic properties of a natural occurring rat model of congenital stationary night blindness with Cacna1f mutation.

Cacna1f gene mutation could lead to incomplete congenital stationary night blindness (iCSNB) disease. The CSNB-like phenotype rat is a spontaneous rat model caused by Cacna1f gene mutation. The present study explored the phenotypic properties of behavior performance in CSNB rats further. The vision-related behaviors of CSNB rats were assessed with a Morris water maze (MWM), passive avoidance tests, and open-field test. Motor ability was evaluated with a rotarod test and a wire hang test, and mechanical pain and thermalgia were used to evaluate sensory system function. Electroretinograms (ERGs)

Testing visual capabilities for medical surveillance or to ensure job fitness.

A rationale is presented for designing screening-type eye examinations to document visual capabilities for specific jobs or changes in visual function following exposure to specific ocular hazards. Possible applications to clinical situations are also discussed. A battery of tests that includes contrast (glare) sensitivity, distortions in macular imaging, and color vision is detailed for use with three populations: automobile driver's license applicants, visual display operators, and laser users, including military as well as nonmilitary installers and repairers of optical fibers for communica
