Introduction: Misuse of inhaled nitrous oxide is a growing concern in France. It is known to alter concentrations of vitamin B12, which is required as a cofactor for methionine synthase and methylmalonyl-CoA mutase activity. Hence, measurement of the concentrations of cobalamin metabolism biomarkers, including vitamin B12, homocysteine, and methylmalonic acid, could assist in the management of patients with a complex clinical presentation or in those who deny the consumption of nitrous oxide. Methods: We retrospectively collected clinical and biological data in patients hospitalized for nitrous

BACKGROUND: RBC folate concentrations are monitored at the population level, with a recommended threshold for optimal neural tube defect (NTD) prevention. A corresponding threshold for serum folate has not been established.
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to estimate the serum folate insufficiency threshold corresponding to the RBC folate threshold for NTD prevention and examine how this threshold is modified by vitamin B12 status.
METHODS: Participants were women (15-40 y; not pregnant or lactating; n = 977) from a population-based biomarker survey in Southern India. RBC folate and serum folat

Chronic deficiency of vitamin B12 is the only nutritional deficiency definitively proved to cause optic neuropathy and loss of vision. The mechanism by which this occurs is unknown. Optic neuropathies are associated with death of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs), neurons that project their axons along the optic nerve to the brain. Injury to RGC axons causes a burst of intracellular superoxide, which then signals RGC apoptosis. Vitamin B12 (cobalamin) was recently shown to be a superoxide scavenger, with a rate constant similar to superoxide dismutase. Given that vitamin B12 deficiency causes an o

A cross-sectional study was carried out between October 2007 and January 2008 to investigate the prevalence and types of anaemia among pregnant women of eastern Sudan. Socio-demographic and obstetrical data were collected using a questionnaire. Haemoglobin (Hb), serum ferritin, serum folate and vitamin B(12) were assessed using standard laboratory methods. Two hundred and seventy-nine pregnant Sudanese women were recruited. Anaemia (Hb <11 gdl) and iron deficiency (ferritin <15 microg/l) were prevalent in 80.3 and 14.3% of the study sample, respectively. Of the total sample, 11.1% had iron-def

Hypocobalaminaemia in cats has previously been identified, but the incidence reported has varied, and the frequency of folate deficiency is unknown. The aims of this study were to evaluate the incidence of low cobalamin and folate levels in a population of cats that were suffering predominantly from diseases of the alimentary tract (including the liver and pancreas) and to ascertain whether severity of disease (as assessed by bodyweight and body condition score (BCS)) related to degree of deficiency. The study population comprised 103 cats, of which 16.5% had low cobalamin levels and 38.8% had

To determine the prevalence and causes of anemia in rural Mexico, blood samples and longitudinal dietary data were collected from 187 women, some pregnant and then lactating, and from 72 men. Blood was used to measure anemia, mean cell volume, and plasma ferritin, folate and vitamin B-12. Anemia was found in 33% of the men, 54% of nonpregnant, nonlactating women, 35% of pregnant women and 41% of lactating women, and varied by season. Low iron stores (ferritin) accompanied anemia in only 8% of men compared with 38-67% of women. Low meat intake and poor dietary iron bioavailability were associat

BACKGROUND: Screening for deficiencies in vitamin B(12) and folate is advocated to prevent anemia in very elderly individuals. However, the effects of vitamin B(12) and folate deficiency on the development of anemia in old age have not yet been established.
METHODS: The current study is embedded in the Leiden 85-Plus Study, a population-based prospective study of subjects aged 85 years. Levels of vitamin B(12), folate, and homocysteine were determined at baseline. Hemoglobin levels and mean corpuscular volume (MCV) were determined annually during 5 years of follow-up.
RESULTS: We analyzed da

BACKGROUND: The Dutch guideline algorithm for the analysis of anaemia in patients of general practitioners (GPs) was programmed in a Clinical Decision Support system (CDS-anaemia) to support the process of diagnosing the cause of anaemia in the laboratory. This study investigates the diagnostic yield of the automated anaemia algorithm compared to that of the manual work up by the GP.
METHODS: This retrospective population-based study consisted of 2697 people ≥18 years. Anaemia was defined according to the Dutch College of General Practitioners (DCGP) guideline. Causes of anaemia were based on

Increased folate intake reduces the risk of neural tube defects, other malformations and also possibly, pregnancy complications. Increasing evidence suggests that the beneficial effect of folate may be related to improved function of methionine synthase, a vitamin B12-dependent enzyme that converts homocysteine to methionine. In India, the majority of the population adheres to a vegetarian diet known to be deficient in vitamin B12. In such a population, increased folate intake may offer minimal protection against birth defects, whereas vitamin B12 administration should be considered. In this r

The aim of our investigation was to evaluate possible connection between burning mouth syndrome and hematinic deficiencies, a hypothesis previously reported in the literature with contradictory results. Serum levels of iron, vitamin B12, folic acid, calcium and magnesium were determined in 41 (aged 31-87 years, mean 68,7 yrs) patients with burning mouth syndrome and 35 matched controls (35-83, mean 63 yrs). Serum iron levels were determined according to Fairbanks and Klee. Levels of vitamin B12 and folic acid were determined on commercially available kits (Imx12 and Imx folate assay, Abbot Par

BACKGROUND: Vitamin B(12) deficiency can occur in individuals with dietary patterns that exclude animal foods and patients who are unable to absorb vitamin B(12 )in food.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: Our clinic serves a high-income population living in Southern Israel. We hypothesize that a tendency to decrease of level of vitamin B(12) in our population is caused by a premeditated decrease in consumption of animal products. We analyzed 512 medical histories of patients undergoing blood tests for vitamin B(12) level for various reasons.
RESULT: The level of vitamin B(12) in 192 patients (37.5%) was

Clinical similarities between vitamin B(12) and copper deficiencies prompted us to investigate if hypocupremia is present in patients receiving vitamin B(12) supplementation. Our pilot study results indicate that a significant number of elderly patients with prior diagnosis of vitamin B(12) deficiency have also undiagnosed hypocupremia.

Various micronutrients are essential for optimal functioning of the peripheral nervous system. Serum vitamin E, vitamin B12, and folic acid were estimated in childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia survivors aged between 5 and 18 years in first continuous remission within 3 years of completion of vincristine-based chemotherapy with and without electrophysiologically defined neuropathy. A total of 80 children were studied. Neuropathy was seen in 27 (33.75%) children electrophysiologically. None of the children had vitamin E deficiency. However, the alpha tocopherol/(cholesterol + triglyceride) r

Imerslund-Gräsbeck syndrome (IGS) or selective vitamin B(12) (cobalamin) malabsorption with proteinuria is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by vitamin B(12) deficiency commonly resulting in megaloblastic anemia, which is responsive to parenteral vitamin B(12) therapy and appears in childhood. Other manifestations include failure to thrive and grow, infections and neurological damage. Mild proteinuria (with no signs of kidney disease) is present in about half of the patients. Anatomical anomalies in the urinary tract were observed in some Norwegian patients. Vitamin B(12) absor

Older adults living in nursing homes (NH) are considered a population group that could be at risk in terms of nutrition, even more so than their community-dwelling peers. Evidence on the nutritional status of NH residents is scarce, as they are commonly excluded from population-based dietary studies. This is also the case in Slovenia. In the presented pilot study, we assessed the intake of macronutrients as well as the intake and status of vitamin D and vitamin B12 on a sample of NH and NH daycare center users to explore the need for a larger representative study. The pilot study included 37 p
