Spontaneous laryngeal reinnervation after recurrent laryngeal or vagus nerve injury.

OBJECTIVES: The status of innervation in patients with laryngeal paralysis is somewhat controversial. Electromyographic activity has been frequently documented in the laryngeal muscles of patients with laryngeal paralysis, and animal experiments report a strong propensity for reinnervation after laryngeal nerve injury. However, a study of intraoperative electromyography performed in patients during reinnervation surgery failed to document activity with stimulation of the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN). Noting the long-observed differences in the symptoms of patients with vagus nerve injury an

Behavior, movements, and demographics of rabid raccoons in Ontario, Canada: management implications.

During 1999-2003, 127 cases of raccoon variant rabies were reported in raccoons (Procyon lotor) and striped skunks (Mephitis mephitis) in Ontario, Canada. Raccoons accounted for 98% (125/127) of the reported cases with behaviors/conditions including aggression, fighting with dogs, ataxia, vocalizations, appearance of being sick, and the presence of porcupine (Erethizon dorsatum) quills. Seventy-eight percent of the rabid raccoons were adults. Juveniles were underrepresented (22%) compared with the adult/juvenile ratios found in nonrabid Ontario raccoon populations. Of the known aged raccoons,

Frequency of nonspecific clinical signs in dogs with separation anxiety, thunderstorm phobia, and noise phobia, alone or in combination.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the frequency of nonspecific clinical signs in dogs with separation anxiety, thunderstorm phobia, noise phobia, or any combination of these conditions and determine whether these conditions are associated in dogs. DESIGN: Case series. ANIMALS: 141 dogs. PROCEDURE: Diagnoses were established using specific criteria. Owners of dogs completed a questionnaire on how frequently their dogs exhibited destructive behavior, urination, defecation, vocalization, and salivation when the owners were absent and the types and frequency of reactions to thunderstorms, fireworks, and

Stereotyped behavior: effects of d-amphetamine and methylphenidate in the young rat.

The proclivity of d-amphetamine and methylphenidate to induce perseverative motoric and vocal side effects detracts from the clinical efficacy of these stimulants in the treatment of Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). In an attempt to develop a model for these deleterious treatment effects, this study explored the behavioral influences exerted by d-amphetamine and methylphenidate in the young laboratory rat. This experiment revealed that doses of these stimulants that typically induce stereotypy provoke diverging behavioral profiles: while animals given 5 mg/kg d-amphetamine exhi

Laryngeal pacemaker. Part I. Electronic pacing of reinnervated strap muscles in the dog.

The best approach to management of bilateral vocal cord paralysis, with its resultant airway compromise, has not yet been universally agreed upon. Recently proposed methods have included direct stimulation of the laryngeal dilators by the modulation of rhythmic information from the chest wall, diaphragm, phrenic nerve, or accessory muscles of respiration. In such an approach, the information obtained is not necessarily related to inspiration only, and direct implantation of a stimulating electrode into the laryngeal musculature may not be fully efficient and tolerated over time. To obviate suc

[Endolaryngeal surgery using highly concentrated human fibrinogen as tissue adhesive. Further trials with fibrin glue].

The use of an activated human fibrinogen concentrate in endolaryngeal surgery has been performed in 31 cases without the conventional suturing technique. Among the satisfactory results of fibrin gluing in endolaryngeal regions are optimum healing tendency due to haemostasis, lack of tissue irritation and toxicity. Persistence and highly adhesive properties were studied in experimental investigations in the dog following motoric stress of clot-sutured vocal cords.

Tryptophan hydroxylase 2 deficiency alters autism-related behavioural phenotypes in rats.

Serotonin is a crucial neurotransmitter implicated in various physiological processes. Dysregulation of the serotonergic system, particularly in early life, may be associated with neuropsychiatric disorders, including autism spectrum disorder. This study utilises a rat model lacking the central serotonin-synthesising enzyme tryptophan hydroxylase 2 (TPH2) to investigate the effects of brain serotonin depletion on core autism-related behaviours. The animals' social behaviour was assessed using social interaction and resident-intruder tests, along with ultrasonic vocalisation analysis to evaluat

Effects of psychosocial stress on laryngeal microbiology and epithelial barrier integrity.

Psychosocial stress and laryngeal physiology are linked. However, the biological mechanisms of psychosocial stress on voice have not been studied. This study delineated the effects of psychosocial stress on laryngeal microbiota composition and vocal fold epithelial integrity. We hypothesized that stress would result in reduced microbial diversity and abundance in laryngeal microbiota, and reduced vocal fold epithelial barrier integrity, with more pronounced differences in females and with increased duration of stress. One hundred and eight, conventionally-raised, C56BL/7 mice (8-10 weeks of ag

Bioengineered larynx and vocal folds: where are we today? A review.

The larynx is responsible for breathing, producing sound, and protecting the trachea against food aspiration through the cough reflex. Nowadays, scaffolding surgery has made it easier to regenerate damaged tissues by facilitating the influx of cells and growth factors. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the current knowledge on tissue engineering of the larynx and vocal folds. It also discusses the achievements and challenges of data sources. In conducting a literature search for relevant papers, we included 68 studies from January 2000 to November 2023, sourced from PubMed and S

Laryngeal Paralysis Following Endotracheal Intubation in a Dog: A Case Report.

The occurrence of laryngeal paralysis following endotracheal intubation in dogs is rare. A one-year-old canine was presented with aspiration pneumonia in the postoperative period following general anesthesia for acetabular denervation surgery. After a month of treatment for aspiration pneumonia, the patient had inspiratory stridor and dyspnea, and the diagnosis of unilateral laryngeal paralysis was made through laryngoscopy. Along with the benefits of endotracheal intubation come many risks. Laryngeal paralysis can be a serious complication, predisposing the patient to aspiration. This report

Gastroesophageal intussusception and extreme esophageal dilatation secondary to bilateral laryngeal paralysis in a cat.

Gastroesophageal intussusception, extreme esophageal dilatation, and laryngeal paralysis are individually rare clinical entities in cats and the simultaneous occurrence in a single animal has not been described. We describe these 3 conditions occurring concurrently in a geriatric cat, and resolution of the cat's clinical signs after treatment with unilateral arytenoid lateralization. This finding supports the need for thorough history taking and examination in cats with extreme esophageal dilatation to determine if upper respiratory tract abnormalities are present, as appropriate treatment mig

Distribution of Label-Retaining Cells and their Properties in the Newborn Vocal Fold Mucosa.

OBJECTIVES: There is growing evidence that the cells in the maculae flavae (MFe) are candidates for tissue stem cells of the vocal fold mucosa and the MFe are a stem cell niche. Distribution of label-retaining cells and their properties in the postnatal vocal fold mucosa were investigated. METHODS: Oral administration of bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) was given to pregnant Sprague-Dawley rats and the label-retaining cells in the postnatal vocal fold mucosa were observed by immunohistochemistry. Immunoreactivity to antibodies directed to Ki-67 was studied to investigate the cell cycle. RESULTS: At

In vivo vocal fold augmentation using an injectable polyethylene glycol hydrogel based on click chemistry.

It is important to focus on urgent needs in clinics and develop optimal materials. For successful augmentation of vocal folds, the ideal filler should be injectable through a syringe, and should stably maintain its volume for a long time without toxicity. To achieve these criteria, a click chemistry-based PEG (polyethylene glycol) hydrogel was developed and applied for vocal fold augmentation in vivo. The PEG hydrogel enables fast gelation in vivo after injection and provides long-term stability. Azide- and dibenzocyclooctyne (DBCO)-modified 4-arm PEG were cross-linked by chemical conjugation

Investigation of phonatory characteristics using ex vivo rabbit larynges.

Quantitative analysis of phonatory characteristics of rabbits has been widely neglected. However, preliminary studies established the rabbit larynx as a potential model of human phonation. This study reports quantitative data on phonation using ex vivo rabbit larynx models to achieve more insight into dependencies of three main components of the phonation process, including airflow, vocal fold dynamics, and the acoustic output. Sustained phonation was induced in 11 ex vivo rabbit larynges. For 414 phonatory conditions, vocal fold vibrations, acoustic, and aerodynamic parameters were analyzed a

The vocal sac of Hylodidae (Amphibia, Anura): Phylogenetic and functional implications of a unique morphology.

Anuran vocal sacs are elastic chambers that recycle exhaled air during vocalizations and are present in males of most species of frogs. Most knowledge of the diversity of vocal sacs relates to external morphology; detailed information on internal anatomy is available for few groups of frogs. Frogs of the family Hylodidae, which is endemic to the Atlantic Forest of Brazil and adjacent Argentina and Paraguay, have three patterns of vocal sac morphology-that is, single, subgular; paired, lateral; and absent. The submandibular musculature and structure of the vocal sac mucosa (the internal wall of

Targeted transtracheal stimulation for vocal fold closure.

Paralysis of the structures in the head and neck due to stroke or other neurological disorder often causes dysphagia (difficulty in swallowing). Patients with dysphagia have a significantly higher incidence of aspiration pneumonia and death. The recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN), which innervates the intrinsic laryngeal muscles that control the vocal folds, travels superiorly in parallel to the trachea in the tracheoesophageal groove. This study tests the hypothesis that functional electrical stimulation (FES) applied via transtracheal electrodes can produce controlled vocal fold adduction. Bipo
