Study on the indoor volatile organic compound treatment and performance assessment with TiO2/MCM-41 and TiO2/quartz photoreactor under ultraviolet irradiation.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are the cause of indoor air pollution and are readily emitted from furniture and cleaning agents. In Taiwan, the concentrations of indoor VOCs range roughly from 1 to 10 ppm. It is important to effectively reduce indoor VOC emissions and establish the implementation of long-term, low-cost, controlled techniques such as those found in the ultraviolet/titanium dioxide (UV/TiO2) control systems. This study evaluates the performance of a photoreactor activated by visible irradiation and packed with TiO2/quartz or TiO2/mobile catalytic material number 41 (MCM-41). …

Maternal multivitamin supplementation mitigates the risk of fetal congenital heart disease associated with high indoor total volatile organic compounds exposure in east china: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Congenital heart disease (CHD) is a common birth defect. Our previous studies suggest that indoor air pollution, especially total volatile organic compounds (TVOCs), may increase fetal CHD risk, whereas vitamin and folic acid (FA) supplements in early pregnancy might offer protection against CHD. However, limited research has explored whether FA or multivitamin supplementation can mitigate the effects of TVOCs exposure on CHD. METHODS: We conducted a case-control study to investigate the association between maternal nutrient supplementation, household indoor air pollutant exposure…

Early-stage response in anaerobic bioreactors due to high sulfate loads: Hydrogen sulfide yield and other organic volatile sulfur compounds as a sign of microbial community modifications.

In this work, the early-stage response of six lab-scale biogas bioreactors fed with different amounts of a sulfate-rich organic agro-industrial effluent was investigated. Biogas characterization, gas chromatography selective for sulfur compounds and high-throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA gene were performed. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) yield went from transient to steady state in ∼ 2 weeks for all the studied conditions. In addition, volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs), like methanethiol (MeSH) and dimethyl sulfide (DMS), were generated at high sulfate loads. Changes were evidenced in the microbial co

Investigating the Association Between Volatile Organic Compounds and Preterm Birth in Detroit, Michigan: Protocol for the Center for Leadership in Environmental Awareness and Research Birth Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Preterm birth (PTB), or birth before 37 weeks of gestation, remains a significant public health issue in the United States, particularly in Detroit, Michigan. Growing evidence suggests that volatile organic compounds (VOCs), aromatic or chlorinated organic compounds that vaporize readily, may influence PTB risk. However, much of this prior work is limited by indirect VOC exposure estimates (eg, assignment based on maternal residential address), single-point or cumulative exposure estimates during pregnancy, or limited consideration of potential mechanistic factors. OBJECTIVE: The …

The use of chitosan as alternative to bentonite for wine fining: Effects on heat-stability, proteins, organic acids, colour, and volatile compounds in an aromatic white wine.

This investigation focuses on the use of chitosan treatment simulating a bentonite fining in order to detect any modification of the wine haze potential by simultaneously evaluating the secondary effects on untargeted fixed and volatile compounds. A significant removal of chitinases was observed after fining an aromatic white wine with 1 g/L of a fungoid chitosan. Even if the more stable thaumatin like protein fractions were not significantly affected, the heat stability of the fined chitosan wine samples were highly improved in the 55-62 °C range. Among the secondary effects of a fining treat
