Rainfall, surface runoff, and root zone pH values were determined in an effort to explain symptoms of decline in white oaks (Quercus alba L.) growing in, and downslope from, a parking lot. The soil was a Morley silt loam (Typic Hapludalf). Root zones within and downslope from the lot were dominated by alkaline soil reactions. Mortality of middle aged white South African gold miners.

A cohort of 3971 white miners in South Africa, born between 1 January 1916 and 31 December 1930 who were alive on 1 January 1970 and currently working in the East Rand-Central Rand-West Rand mining areas, was followed up for nine years, when the 3426 survivors were aged from 48 to 62. Fifteen (0.4%) had been lost to view and 530 had died (13.4% of the 3956 whose vital status was determined). Exercise testing in children with Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome.

Exercise testing using a modified Bruce treadmill protocol was performed by 17 children with Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) syndrome. All had intracardiac electrophysiology studies as well. Atrioventricular nodal reentry in the Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome.

Although supraventricular tachycardia in the Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) syndrome is generally due to atrioventricular reentry, the presence of the accessory pathway does not preclude other mechanisms of tachycardia. We observed AV nodal reentry in three of 95 consecutive patients (3.1%) referred for assessment of arrhythmias associated with WPW syndrome. The unique observation of spontaneous transition from atrioventricular reentry to AV nodal reentry at a similar cycle length was observed in one patient and is the subject of this report.

Thyroxine levels and antler growth in white-tailed deer.

Five normal male, 5 female, and 3 castrated fawns and 5 adult male white-tailed deer were housed in individual pens for one year to compare the relationships between thyroxine (T4) and other blood parameters and the antler cycle. 2. While most texts continue to assert that the Rorschach white space response (S) indicates hostility and oppositionality, several studies suggest that such responses are more accurately reflective of cognitive differentiation and autonomous strivings. Paroxysmal atrial fibrillation in the Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome.

Eighty-eight patients with preexcitation were studied to determine how 30 patients with documented spontaneous paroxysmal atrial fibrillation differed from 58 patients without this arrhythmia. Inducible reentrant tachycardia was present in 23 (77 percent) of the 30 patients with, versus 28 (48 percent) of the 58 patients without, atrial fibrillation (p less than 0.025). Wolff-Parkinson-White bigeminal pattern after administration of tensilon.

A rare case of WPW bigeminal pattern was recorded in a 53-year-old man. This electrocardiographic pattern occurred after 10 mg tensilon was given intravenously to suppress a supraventricular tachycardia. WPW bigeminal pattern was terminated after intravenous administration of 100 mg lidocaine and the occurrence of a PVB. We assume that tensilon inducing a vagal effect on the anomalous pathway and changes in the heart rate has caused WPW bigeminal pattern.

Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease with extensive degeneration of white matter.

Degeneration of the white matter is uncommon is Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD), and when it occurs is usually mild, and limited in distribution. In the case of 77-year-old woman with CJD lasting 1 year, there was extensive degeneration of cerebral white matter in addition to severe loss of neurons and hypertrophic astrogliosis in cortex and striatum. The extent and severity of white matter lesions makes the case unusual.

The case reported here consisted of an association of a Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome (WPW) with thyrotoxicosis, with simultaneous recovery by thyroidectomy; this lead the authors to review 13 previous cases in the literature. The physiopathologic discussion emphasized several points: 1) the specific action of thyroid hormones, 2) the hypothesis of the possible existence of inapparent pathways of pre-exitation in most subjects and 3) a simple practical attitude to adopt in all Wolff-Parkinson-White cases especially when rapid.

Heparin sodium-induced thrombosis is insidious and difficult to diagnose. If untreated, it results in death or major amputation. We have treated seven patients with thromboses resulting from platelet aggregation induced by heparin. Four patients had acute arterial ischemia of the lower extremity, venous gangrene developed in two, and one patient had an occluded autogenous vein femoral popliteal bypass in the immediate postoperative period. Cerebral white matter lesions in sudden infant death syndrome.

In 21.6% of infants who died of sudden infant death syndrome, the cerebral white matter showed areas of leukomalacia. Of those infants with congenital heart disease, 24.8% had lesions, whereas 4.4% of infants who died from known acute causes had lesions. The sites of the cerebral white matter lesions, subcortical or periventricular, seem to be related to the age of the infant.
