Cardiopulmonary performance at rest and during exercise in seven patients with increased transradiancy of one lung ("Macleod's syndrome").

A group of seven patients with increased transradiancy of one lung included four with chronic bronchitis. The function of the two lungs combined was assessed by measurement of the lung volumes, airway resistance, and carbon monoxide uptake at rest, and by measurement of pulmonary ventilation, gas exchange, blood gases, and cardiac output at rest and during steady state exercise. The contribution of the hypertransradiant lung to the overall functional abnormalities at rest was estimated using a radioactive gas technique. All the patients had airway obstruction. Pulmonary gas exchange was only m

Mechanisms of the Effects of Short-Term Inhalations of Xe and O2 Gas Mixture in the Rehabilitation of Post-COVID Ventilation Failure.

The article presents a theoretical rationale and a clinical case of relief of post-COVID ventilation failure by inhalation of Xe and O2 gas mixture. Pneumonitis of coronavirus etiology transforms saturated phospholipids of surfactant into a solid-ordered phase, which disrupts surface tension, alveolar pneumatization, and alveolar-capillary gas exchange. Using molecular modeling (B3LYP/lanl2dz; GAUSSIAN09), we demonstrated that Xe atom due to the van der Waals dispersion interaction increases the distance between the phospholipid acyl chains providing a phase transition from the solid-ordered t

A comparison of tungsten-quartz-halogen, plasma arc and light-emitting diode light sources for the polymerization of an orthodontic adhesive.

This study investigated whether there were differences between the debond stress and adhesive remnant index (ARI) of an adhesive cured with three different orthodontic light sources. Sixty sound premolar teeth were divided into three groups of 20. A standard pre-adjusted edgewise premolar bracket (Victory Series) was bonded to each tooth using a light-cured orthodontic adhesive, Transbond X. Group 1 (control) specimens were cured with an Ortholux XT (tungsten-quartz-halogen bulb) light for 20 seconds, group 2 with an Ortho lite (plasma arc) for 6 seconds and group 3 with an Ortholux LED light-

Biological effects of blue light from dental curing units.

OBJECTIVES: This study assessed the effects of three common dental photo-curing light sources (quartz-tungsten-halogen (QTH), plasma-arc (PAC), and laser) on the cellular function of fibroblasts in vitro. METHODS: Mouse fibroblasts were exposed to light from dental photo-curing units for clinically relevant durations, with total energy exposures ranging from 1.3 to 60 J/cm(2). The temperature rise of the cell-culture medium was measured to assess any possible effect from temperature increases, and cellular function was assessed by succinic dehydrogenase (SDH) activity of mitochondria. To dire

Relative preservation of peripheral lung function in smoking-related pulmonary emphysema: assessment with 99mTc-MAA perfusion and dynamic 133Xe SPET.

In this study the cross-sectional functional differences between the central and peripheral lung in smokers with pulmonary emphysema were evaluated by lung perfusion and dynamic xenon-133 single-photon emission tomography (SPET). The subjects were 81 patients with a long-term smoking history and relatively advanced emphysema, 17 non-smoker patients with non-obstructive lung diseases and six healthy non-smokers. Regional lung functional difference between the peripheral and central lung was assessed in the upper, middle and lower lung zones by technetium-99m macroaggregated albumin SPET and dyn…

Evaluation of the effects of diazepam and an experimental anti-anxiety drug on regional cerebral blood flow.

In the normal brain, cerebral blood flow (CBF) and function are closely coupled. Thus, changes in brain function associated with drug-induced anxiety reduction should be accompanied by parallel CBF changes. Benzodiazepines such as diazepam have been reported to reduce CBF. It is unclear, however, if this CBF decrease is specifically a function of the anti-anxiety property of the drug. To examine the relationship between drug-induced anxiety reduction and CBF changes more closely, i.v. injections of an established anxiolytic agent and an experimental anti-anxiety drug were given to patients wit

[Diagnosis of hemodynamic compromise in patients with chronic cerebral ischemia; measurement of cerebral blood volume (CBV) with 99mTc-RBC SPECT].

To evaluate the efficacy of tests for selecting patients with hemodynamic compromise, measurement of cerebral blood volume (CBV) with 99mTc-RBC single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) was performed in thirteen patients with occlusive cerebrovascular disease, and was compared with results obtained by 133Xe SPECT and acetazolamide (Diamox) test. All patients in our study suffered TIA, RIND, or minor complete stroke. Cerebral angiography demonstrated severe stenosis or occlusion in the ipsilateral internal carotid artery or middle cerebral artery, although plain CT scan or MRI revealed

Cerebral blood flow and carbon dioxide reactivity in children with bacterial meningitis.

We examined total and regional cerebral blood flow (CBF) by stable xenon computed tomography in 20 seriously ill children with acute bacterial meningitis to determine whether CBF was reduced and to examine the changes in CBF during hyperventilation. In 13 children, total CBF was normal (62 +/- 20 ml/min/100 gm) but marked local variability of flow was seen. In five other children, total CBF was significantly reduced (26 +/- 10 ml/min/100 gm; p less than 0.05), with flow reduced more in white matter (8 +/- 5 ml/min/100 gm) than in gray matter (30 +/- 15 ml/min/100 gm). Autoregulation of CBF app…

[The remote effects of brain tumors on cerebral blood flow as measured by single photon emission CT].

In order to assess the remote effects of supratentorial brain tumors, the cerebellar blood flow and cerebral blood flow of the symmetrical regions in the contralateral cerebral hemispheres were measured by single photon emission CT. Forty four patients with supratentorial brain tumors, such as gliomas, meningiomas and germ cell tumors etc., were included in this study. Contralateral cerebellar hypoperfusion (CCH) was exhibited in 51%, 18 of 35 unilateral brain tumors. Regarding tumor location, CCH was more correlated with frontoparietal lesions. The mean values of contralateral delta Cerebella

[Characteristics of regional cerebral circulation in parkinsonism patients according the 133Xe clearance findings].

As a rule, in patients with idiopathic parkinsonism the cerebral volume blood flow is decreased in the parietal lobes. Patients with vascular parkinsonism display a decreased blood flow in the frontal and occiptial lobes, more so in the parietal. An inhalation of pure oxygen in the control group of normals decreased the general cerebral blood flow, while in parkinsonic patients it increased it only in the parietal lobes. Treatment with l-dopa regularly and significantly increased the general and regional cerebral blood flow.

Upper limit of cerebral blood flow autoregulation in experimental renovascular hypertension in the baboon.

The effect of arterial hypertension on cerebral blood flow was studied by the intracarotid 133Xe clearance method in baboons. The arterial blood pressure was raised in gradual steps with angiotensin. Baboons with renal hypertension of 8-12 weeks duration were studied along with normotensive baboons. In initially normotensive baboons, cerebral blood flow remained constant until the mean arterial blood pressure had risen to the range of 140 to 154 mm Hg; thereafter cerebral blood flow increased with each rise in mean arterial blood pressure. In the chronically hypertensive baboons, cerebral bloo

Theoretical feasibility of dual-energy radiography for structural and functional imaging of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

PURPOSE: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) affects ∼200 million people worldwide. We propose two-dimensional (2D) dual-energy (DE) x-ray imaging of lung structure and function for the assessment of COPD, and investigate the resulting image quality theoretically. METHODS: We investigated xenon-enhanced DE (XeDE) radiography for functional imaging of COPD and unenhanced DE radiography for structural imaging of COPD. We modeled the ability of human observers to detect ventilation defects in XeDE images and emphysema in (unenhanced) DE images using the detectability index ( d ' ) as a…

Cerebral reserve is decreased in elderly patients with carotid stenosis.

OBJECTIVES: Octogenarians and even patients over 70 years old have unexplained poor outcomes with carotid angioplasty and stenting (CAS). We sought to evaluate whether older patients may have compromised intracranial collaterals and cerebral reserve and be intolerant to otherwise clinically silent emboli generated during CAS. METHODS: One thousand twenty-four cerebral blood flow (CBF) studies performed between 1991 and 2001 with stable xenon computed tomography scans (Xe/CT) were reviewed. CBF was measured before and after 1 gm intravenous acetazolamide (ACZ), a cerebral vasodilator. The norm…
