PURPOSE: This study aims to compare the outcomes of posterior component separation and transversus abdominis release (PCSTAR) with the open anterior component separation (OACS) technique. OACS, first described by Ramirez et al. (Plast Reconstr Surg 86(3):519-526, 1990), has become an established technique for local myofascial advancement in abdominal hernia surgery. PCSTAR, described by Novitsky et al. (Am J Surg 204(5):709-716, 2012), is being used more frequently and is rapidly becoming the technique of choice in complex ventral hernia repair.
METHODS: Analysis was conducted according to PR

Rectus sheath haematoma (RSH) is rarely thought of as a cause of abdominal pain in renal transplant recipients. A 36-year-old woman, a post-deceased donor renal allograft transplant recipient for chronic interstitial nephritis, on triple drug immunosuppression (tacrolimus, mycophenolate mofetil and prednisolone) with basiliximab induction, developed acute vascular rejection and acute tubular injury with suspected antibody-mediated rejection. While on plasmapheresis and haemodialysis for delayed graft function, she developed acute left lower abdominal pain on the 16th postoperative day with ten

A young, active duty sailor presented with right upper quadrant abdominal pain. History, physical, and laboratory findings initially suggested cholecystitis or related disease. Further evaluation found myoglobinuria and a recently increased exercise program, leading to the diagnosis of exercise-induced right upper abdominal wall rhabdomyolysis. Although not a common cause of abdominal pain, this diagnosis should be considered in the patient with abdominal pain and a recently increased exercise program, particularly exercises of the abdominal wall such as "abdominal crunches."

Long term complications of laparoscopic cholecystectomy are uncommon. However, as experience with this procedure accumulates, sporadic reports of non-biliary complication have been published. We report a case of abdominal wall sinus formation secondary to gallbladder perforation and stone spillage occurring during laparoscopic cholecystectomy.

Biopsies of muscle and adipose tissue (AT) are useful tools to gain insights into the aging processes in these tissues. However, they are invasive procedures and their risk/benefit profile in older adults can be altered by sarcopenia, frailty, poor healing, and multimorbidity. Their success rates, safety, and tolerability in a geriatric population have not been reported in detail. Investigators in the Study of Muscle, Mobility, and Aging (SOMMA) performed biopsies of muscle and AT in older adults and prospectively collected data on biopsy success rates, safety, and tolerability. We report here

PURPOSE: Given the high prevalence of vertebral fractures post-radiotherapy in patients with metastatic spine disease, accurate and rapid muscle segmentation could support efforts to quantify muscular changes due to disease or treatment and enable biomechanical modeling for assessments of vertebral loading to improve personalized evaluation of vertebral fracture risk. This study presents a deep-learning approach for segmenting the complete volume of the trunk muscles from clinical CT images trained using sparsely annotated data.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: we extracted 2,009 axial CT images at the

The Emperor Penguin Aptenodytes forsteri is the largest living species of penguin, found exclusively in Antarctica, and is unique in breeding during the winter. Consequently, fewer anatomical studies have been conducted on this species over time compared to others. This study aims to provide an updated and comprehensive description of the hindlimb musculature of Aptenodytes forsteri. The muscles of the thigh, shank and foot were compared along postnatal development. The results were compared with the muscles of swimming and diving birds and also with ground-dwelling taxa. By dissecting seven s

Diabetic gastroparesis is a common complication of diabetes, adversely affecting quality of life with symptoms of abdominal discomfort, nausea, and vomiting. The pathogenesis of this complex disorder is not well understood, involving abnormalities in the extrinsic and enteric nervous systems, interstitial cells of Cajal (ICCs), smooth muscles and immune cells. The ob/ob mouse model of obesity and diabetes develops delayed gastric emptying, providing an animal model for investigating how gastric smooth muscle dysfunction contributes to the pathophysiology of diabetic gastroparesis. Although ROC

Manduca sexta larvae are an important model system for studying the neuromechanics of soft body locomotion. They climb on plants using the abdominal prolegs to grip and maneuver in any orientation and on different surfaces. The prolegs grip passively with an array of cuticular hooks, and grip release is actively controlled by retractor muscles inserted into the soft planta membrane at the proleg tip. Until now, the principal planta retractor muscles (PPRMs) in each body segment were thought to be a single fiber bundle originating on the lateral body wall. Here, using high resolution X-ray micr

The current study investigated the effects of a low back pain (LBP) vibration modality on trunk motor control. Trunk repositioning error and … resting muscle activation prior to the trunk perturbation was higher in both the back extensor and abdominal muscles when concurrent vibration was applied. These findings suggest that cutaneous low back vibration significantly alters motor control responses and this should be considered before implementing cutaneous vibration as a low back pain management strategy …

The facial nerve is the most frequently damaged nerve in head and neck trauma. Patients undergoing facial nerve reconstruction often complain about disturbing abnormal synkinetic movements of the facial muscles (mass movements, synkinesis) which are thought to result from misguided collateral branching of regenerating motor axons and reinnervation of inappropriate muscles. Here, we examined whether use of an aorta Y-tube conduit during reconstructive surgery after facial nerve injury reduces synkinesis of orbicularis oris (blink reflex) and vibrissal (whisking) musculature. The abdominal aorta

SRUS is a rare condition in children, which usually presents with a symptom complex of rectal bleeding, passage of mucus and straining on defecation, tenesmus, perineal and abdominal pain, sensation of incomplete defecation, constipation and rectal prolapse. The underlying etiology of SRUS is not fully understood but it is likely to be secondary to ischemic changes in the rectum associated with paradoxical contraction of pelvic floor and external anal sphincter muscles and rectal prolapse. Conservative measures like high intake of fluids and fibers, laxatives, biofeedback and behavior modifica

An 89-year-old female presented with typical symptoms of acute diverticulitis. Abdominal CT revealed an abdominal wall hernia with signs of acute incarceration in the lateral part of the transverse abdominis muscle and rupture of the transversalis fascia. The findings were confirmed intraoperatively. The present case underlines the diagnostic importance of abdominal CT, especially in patients with acute abdomen, allowing for selection of appropriate therapy options.

BACKGROUND: Low back pain (LBP) is common in the general population and among postpartum women. Abdominal muscle exercise is often used to treat LBP, but it is unknown if fatiguing abdominal muscle exercise can produce exercise-induced hypoalgesia (EIH).
OBJECTIVES: To assess pressure pain thresholds (PPTs) at rest and following fatiguing trunk flexor exercise (EIH) in (1) nulligravid and postpartum women to evaluate the impact of pregnancy and childbirth and (2) nulligravid women and men to examine sex differences.
METHODS: Seventy healthy adults (31 postpartum women, 23 nulligravid women,

Stiff person syndrome (SPS) is characterized by rigidity of truncal and proximal muscles. The presence of abdominal and paraspinal rigidity is a defining clinical feature of SPS. It is rarely associated with the lower motor neuron (LMN) features. We report a patient with SPS whose initial clinical presentation was that of brachial monomelic amyotrophy (BMA). A 24-year-old gentleman presented with a history of the left upper limb wasting and weakness. In addition, he reported stiffness of the lower limbs and abdomen while walking. On examination, patient had left upper limb monomelic amyotrophy

An omphalocele is a congenital defect in the abdominal wall characterized by absent abdominal muscles, fascia, and skin. The characteristic ultrasound appearance includes a midline defect with herniation of abdominal contents into the base of the umbilical cord. Other anatomic abnormalities are seen in approximately 50% of cases, most notably cardiac defects (19%-32%). Approximately, 50% of cases are associated with genetic and multiple malformation syndromes including trisomy 13/18, pentalogy of Cantrell and Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome. Therefore, a thorough evaluation is recommended, includi…

The abdominal muscles are largely quiescent during normal breathing but may exhibit tonic activity or subtle respiratory modulation. The origin of baseline abdominal motor nerve activity (AbNA) if present remains uncharacterised. The contribution of the Kölliker-Fuse nucleus (KF) in the dorsolateral pons in the patterning and amplitude of AbNA was investigated using in situ perfused brainstem preparations of juvenile rats (n=12). Two types of AbNA were observed: Type I - expiratory-modulated (n=7), and Type II - weakly inspiratory/post-inspiratory-modulated (n=5). Despite this, all preparation…
