Clinical Relevance of Contact Allergy to Gold Sodium Thiosulphate in Fibromyalgia.

Fibromyalgia is a chronic syndrome characterized by pain, fatigue, and cognitive disturbances. The increased prevalence of contact allergy to gold in individuals with fibromyalgia when compared with the general population has previously been described. Gold contact allergy can manifest as a systemic contact dermatitis, with cutaneous and extracutaneous manifestations presenting upon systemic administration of gold. This study aimed to establish whether gold allergy is of significance in the fibromyalgia population. Prior to patch testing with the Swedish baseline series and an extended dental

Persistent facial edema due to spider bite: a case of edematous cutaneous loxoscelism.

BACKGROUND: The bite of spiders of the Loxosceles genus causes loxoscelism. It can occur in cutaneous-necrotic, cutaneous-visceral, or predominantly edematous cutaneous loxoscelism forms. This last form is a rare variant characterized by edema without necrosis with a frequency of 5% of all cases of loxoscelism. CLINICAL CASE: A 6-year-old girl presented edema in the eyelid that progressively increased and spread to the entire face. The relative reported that this event occurred after a spider bite. Physical examination revealed a bite-type lesion on the lower left eyelid, generalized edema th

Diazinon and porphyria cutanea tarda.

Cutaneous application of diazinon to rats over a period of 12 weeks gives rise to a condition biochemically indistinguishable from porphyria cutanea tarda. Faecal porphyrin levels are elevated with the appearance of isocoproporphyrin in the faeces. Oral administration of diazinon does not appear to cause any disturbance of porphyrin metabolism.

Novel Route of Sirolimus Administration in a Neonate.

A term newborn presented with widespread cutaneous erythematous to bluish lesions since birth. He had extensive lesions in the gastrointestinal tract, brain, retina, heart, and bones. He also developed an intestinal perforation due to erosion of an intestinal lesion. Due to his critical status and clinical presentation, he was initially diagnosed with multifocal lymphangioendotheliomatosis with thrombocytopenia (MLT), and sirolimus treatment was initiated. Sirolimus was given by buccal route in this nonfeeding patient. Therapeutic serum levels were obtained comparable to enteral administration

Treatment planning in cutaneous T-cell lymphoma.

Effective long-term management of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL) requires administration of skin-directed therapies such as topically applied nitrogen mustard or photochemotherapy to achieve a complete response in clinically early disease (patch and thin-plaque-phase mycosis fungoides, MF) and often the concomitant administration of well-tolerated drugs with systemic effects such as interferon alfa, bexarotene, methotrexate or extracorporeal photopheresis in more advanced, but not highly aggressive/nontransformed disease (thick plaque or tumor phase MF or erythrodermic CTCL). The author's ap

[Urogenital complaints: value of systemic estrogen therapy].

Local and systemic therapies with estrogens lead to a fast alleviation of urogenital symptoms, which occur frequently in the postmenopausal women. Especially atrophical changes in vulva and vagina, but also complaints about incontinence are improved by estrogen therapy. Even though there is no objective evidence of an improvement of stress incontinence, there are less infections of the lower urinary tract as well as a diminution of urge incontinence. Moreover, systemic estrogen therapy helps to prevent postmenopausal osteoporosis and cardiovascular diseases. Urogenital complaints may motivate

Acute and severe acne in a patient treated with bevacizumab.

BACKGROUND: Bevacizumab is a recombinant, humanized monoclonal antibody against vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) that inhibits angiogenesis. Bevacizumab is typically well tolerated; its major side effects include hypertension, proteinuria, bleeding, gastrointestinal perforation, and arterial thrombotic events, among others. Cutaneous side effects associated with the use of bevacizumab are rare and involve mainly itching and exfoliative dermatitis. Nonspecific skin rash and acneiform eruptions have recently been described in patients following infusion of bevacizumab. METHODS: Finding

Therapeutic effect of anti-L3T4 monoclonal antibody GK1.5 on cutaneous leishmaniasis in genetically-susceptible BALB/c mice.

The effect of in vivo treatment with anti-L3T4 monoclonal antibody (mAb) on the course of experimentally-induced cutaneous leishmaniasis was studied in genetically susceptible BALB/c mice. Administration of anti-L3T4 mAb resulted in a pronounced therapeutic effect as reflected by both resolution of lesions and a dramatic reduction in the parasite load in treated mice. This effect was specific for anti-L3T4 mAb and correlated with a selective depletion of L3T4+ T cells in the lymphoid tissues of treated mice. Moreover, both the therapeutic effect of anti-L3T4 mAb on cutaneous leishmaniasis and

In vitro and in vivo efficacy of novel flavonoid dimers against cutaneous leishmaniasis.

Treatment of leishmaniasis by chemotherapy remains a challenge because of limited efficacy, toxic side effects, and drug resistance. We previously reported that synthetic flavonoid dimers have potent antipromastigote and antiamastigote activity against Leishmania donovani, the causative agent of visceral leishmaniasis. Here, we further investigate their leishmanicidal activities against cutaneous Leishmania species. One of the flavonoid dimers (compound 39) has marked antipromastigote (50% inhibitory concentrations [IC50s], 0.19 to 0.69 μM) and antiamastigote (IC50s, 0.17 to 2.2 μM) activities

Antioxidant Activity of Quercetin-Containing Liposomes-in-Gel and Its Effect on Prevention and Treatment of Cutaneous Eczema.

Cutaneous eczema is a kind of skin disease is characterized by inflammation. The main manifestations are various types of dermatitis, eczema, and urticaria. There are usually complications such as erythema, blisters, and epidermal peeling. The quercetin might have a therapeutic effect on cutaneous eczema due to its favorable antioxidant activity and anti-inflammatory effects. Currently, there are few studies on transdermal administration of antioxidant drugs for the treatment of cutaneous eczema. The aim of this study was to prepare quercetin-containing liposomes-in-gel (QU-LG), its antioxidan

Value of patch tests in clindamycin-related drug eruptions.

BACKGROUND: Patch tests help to confirm the aetiology of the cutaneous adverse drug reactions involving delayed hypersensitivity mechanisms, but the results vary with the pattern of skin reaction and the culprit drug. OBJECTIVES: To analyse the results of patch tests in patients with cutaneous adverse drug reactions imputable to clindamycin and assess their contribution to the diagnosis. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between 2005 and 2009, we studied patients with delayed cutaneous adverse drug reactions following administration of clindamycin, usually associated with other drugs. Vincristine-induced eccrine squamous syringometaplasia.

Eccrine squamous syringometaplasia is a histologic finding associated with chemotherapy administration and other cutaneous diseases. Concentration of the chemotherapeutic agents is believed to effect toxic changes in these epithelial structures. We report the first case of vincristine-induced eccrine squamous syringometaplasia in a 12-year-old patient undergoing treatment for rhabdomyosarcoma.

Microneedle technologies in emerging strategies for non-transdermal drug delivery.

Microneedles (MNs) have been employed in skin drug delivery for over two decades. These platforms have been demonstrating the ability to penetrate restrictive tissue barriers in a minimally invasive manner, which significantly improved the efficiency of transdermal drug administration. More recently, MN technologies have emerged as a versatile platform for drug delivery beyond conventional transdermal applications. Advances in MN engineering have diversified MNs to include unique shapes, materials, and mechanical properties that can be tailored for tissue-specific applications, overcoming limi

Retinol-Loaded Mannosylerythritol Lipid Nanoliposome for Enhanced Human Skin Penetration.

BACKGROUND: Functional cosmetic materials with anti-aging properties, such as wrinkle reduction, often struggle to penetrate the skin's stratum corneum (skin barrier). Therefore, to exert anti-aging effects, these materials must pass through the skin barrier and reach fibroblasts in the dermal layer. In this study, deformable liposomes were developed for efficient transdermal delivery of retinol, a well-known anti-wrinkle agent. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Five formulations (ML-1 to ML-5) were prepared using hydrogenated lecithin (HL) and mannosylerythritol lipid (MEL) as an edge activator with HL

Recent advances in dissolving microneedles for breast cancer immunotherapy: local delivery and tumor microenvironment remodeling.

Breast cancer is generally characterized by limited immunogenicity. Although immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) provide survival benefits in a subset of patients with triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), overall response rates remain limited and are accompanied by pronounced therapeutic heterogeneity and systemic immune-related adverse events. The immunosuppressive tumor immune microenvironment (TIME), characterized by restricted antigen presentation, limited effector T-cell infiltration, and enrichment of immunosuppressive cell populations, represents a key barrier to durable immunotherapy
