In Colombia, little information is available concerning the epidemiology of leptospirosis in urban environments. Furthermore, the role of dogs in the transmission cycle of leptospirosis in the urban setting is unclear. To explore the potential role of canines in the transmission of leptospirosis in Cali, a serological study was conducted with 197 serum samples collected from stray dogs during 2001 and 2003. Serum specimens were screened with the Microscopic Agglutination Test (MAT) and 7 serovars--Icterohaemorrhagiae, Canicola, Gryppotyphosa, Hardjo strain Hardjobovis, Pomona, Hardjo strain Ha

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Errors in blood grouping are occasionally due to anomalous antibodies or extraneous materials in the reagents. We investigated the case of a volunteer blood donor who was originally grouped as AB, Rh-positive, by slide grouping. However, her washed red cells showed group B, which agreed with her reverse serum grouping.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Standard serologic techniques were employed throughout.
RESULTS: Investigation revealed an unusual autoantibody in the donor's blood that preferentially agglutinated the red cells in the presence of citrate. Because the groupin

Between 1982 and 1999 blood samples were collected from 500 polar bears (Ursus maritimus) captured in the Beaufort and Chukchi seas, to determine the seroprevalence of Brucella species, Toxoplasma gondii, and Trichinella species infections. The bears were classified into four age groups, cubs, yearlings, subadults and adults. Brucella and Toxoplasma antibodies were detected by agglutination (a buffered acidified card antigen and rapid automated presumptive test for brucellosis and a commercial latex agglutination test for toxoplasmosis); an ELISA was used to detect Trichinella antibodies. In this cross-sectional, community-based study, sera were obtained from 573 subjects. Brucella sero-positivity was detected in 5.4% according to the standard tube agglutination test, rising to 11.9% when the Rose-Bengal test was used. Brucellosis is a serious public health problem in eastern Turkey.

Sixty (19 male, 41 female) free-ranging adult eastern bettongs (Bettongia gaimardi) were captured in Tasmania and translocated to the Australian Capital Territory between July 2011 and September 2012 for reintroduction into fenced, predator-proof reserves. The bettongs were anesthetized for physical examination and screened for selected diseases during translocation. Reference ranges for hematologic and biochemical parameters were determined. Two bettongs had detectable antibodies to the alphaherpesviruses macropodid herpesvirus 1 and macropodid herpesvirus 2 by serum neutralization assay. A n

A 5-year-old neutered male Mastiff and an 8-year-old spayed female Labrador Retriever were presented to the University of Minnesota Veterinary Medical Center. The Mastiff was presented for evaluation of lameness and pyoderma one month prior in Missouri, where he tested positive for Ehrlichia canis by serum ELISA test, treated with doxycycline. PCR for Ehrlichia sp, Anaplasma sp, Babesia sp, and Bartonella sp, and PCR for antigen receptor rearrangement were negative, serum protein electrophoresis (SPE) revealed polyclonal gammopathy, and mildly reactive lymphoid cells were seen cytologically. Monoclonal antibodies against etiological agents of Weil's disease were produced by cell fusion technology. Twenty hybridomas were produced through the fusion of P3X63Ag8 .653 cells with spleen cells from BALB/c mice immunized against Leptospira interrogans serovar icterohaemorrhagiae RGA strain and serovar copenhageni Shiromizu and M20 strains. Reactivities of the antibodies produced by the hybridomas were determined by the microscopic agglutination test. Among the five hybridoma antibodies to the RGA strain, two reacted specifically to serovar icterohaemorrhagiae, two reacted to serovar icte

The laboratory diagnosis of Chagas' disease is a complex one. Factors relating to the host immune response and the antigenic variability of T. cruzi must be considered in the final interpretation of tests results. Parasitologic methods for detecting T. cruzi, immunologic methods for detecting T. cruzi antigens in different biological fluids and serologic tests for detection and quantification of different classes of immunoglobulins are well standardized and used in the diagnosis of the acute or chronic phase of the disease. Xenodiagnosis is the most common parasitologic test employed, although

According to the World Health Organization, every year about 1 million cases of purulent bacterial meningitis (PBM) are registered in the world, of which 200 thousand cases end in death. Bacterial meningitis is polyethiologic, which makes the task of determining the pathogen the main in the organization of epidemiological surveillance, treatment regimens, planning of preventive and anti-epidemic measures. The quality of laboratory diagnostics has a key influence on this. The true incidence of meningitis of different etiology can be altered at low-efficiency laboratory diagnostics. This work wa

Sera from 386 environmental sanitation workers, concerned with water supply, drains and drainage galleries, sewers, garbage collection and road sweepers, were examined for leptospiral agglutinins by the microscopic agglutination test. Altogether 40 of the 386 workers (10.4%) were positive to one or more serovars; however, the difference in seropositivity between the professional categories was not significant (p < 0.05). Twelve serovars were recorded among the seropositive workers with predominance of L. castelonis and L. australis; but the difference between the serovars was not statistically

From June 1971 to June 1972, sera from 600 dogs in Sydney were tested for leptospiral agglutinins by a rapid slide agglutination method. The end-point titre was taken at 50 percent agglutination of the live organisms. Forty-one samples (6.8 percent) had a significant leptospiral titres (100 or greater) and 5 of these reacted to 2 serotypes. Thirty serums (5 percent) contained agglutinins against L. copenhageni, and 6 (1 percent) against L. pomona, while a few samples reacted against hardjo, tarassovi, australis, grippotyphosa or pyrogenes serotypes. No significant titres were found to L. canic

Although brucellosis and its means of transmission were discovered over 100 years ago, the disease remains a world-wide problem, predominantly so in developing countries. Brucellosis has been an emerging disease since the discovery of B. melitensis by Bruce in 1887. The diagnosis of brucellosis can be challenging since its presentation can affect any body organ and system and can overlap that of a wide spectrum of infectious and non-infectious diseases. Routine biochemical and hematological laboratory tests also overlap with those of many other diseases. Thus, brucella-specific tests are the m

Pentraxin 1 (PTX1) is a member of the pentraxin protein family, which plays important roles in the innate immunity of vertebrates. In fish, the biological function of PTX1 is essentially unknown. In this study, we examined the expression and function of a PTX homologue (CsPTX1) from the tongue sole, Cynoglossus semilaevis. CsPTX1 contains 223 amino acids and shares 49.3%-38.8% overall sequence identity with other known fish pentraxins. CsPTX1 is expressed in multiple tissues and is upregulated by bacterial and viral infection. CsPTX1 contains a pentraxin domain, which is known to bind extracel

Brucellosis is a common zoonotic infection worldwide and a major public health problem in developing countries including China. The aim of our study was to investigate the seroprevalence of Brucella infection in humans in Yixing, located at the centre of the Yangtze River Delta Urban Agglomeration. A total of 895 sera from apparently healthy abattoir workers and 3303 sera from general healthy people living in rural areas were collected in Yixing, screened by Rose-Bengal plate agglutination test (RBPT) and the positives were confirmed by standard tube agglutination test (SAT) according to offic

Chronic meningitism is a less frequent manifestation of neurocysticercosis caused by Taenia solium cysticerci. In the present study we used Co-agglutination (Co-A), a simple and rapid slide agglutination test to detect specific Cysticercus antigen in the 67 cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples from patients with chronic meningitis of unknown etiology. The results were compared with that of ELISA for detection of antibodies. Among these samples four (5.97%) were positive for Cysticercus antigen by Co-A test and six (8.95%) were positive for antibodies by ELISA. Two samples were positive by both Co
