Defects of the nasal septum are a common complication after nasal surgery. Affected patients frequently suffer from bleeding, crusting and impaired nasal air flow. The surgical closure of septal defects remains a distinctive challenge. Though many different techniques have been described, the failure rate of this procedure remains high. In the case presented here, a large basal septum defect occurred after a prosthetic Le Fort-I osteotomy. The attempt to cover the distance between the bony nasal floor and the nasal septum with pedicled mucosal flaps failed due to extensive scar formation of th

The following case report describes the buccal and coronal bone augmentation around an irretrievable tooth using forced eruption and buccal root torque for immediate nonsubmerged implant placement. A mandibular left second premolar with degree 2 mobility, severe buccal bone resorption, and interproximal angular bony defects was subjected to forced eruption and buccal root torque. Five months after this process, the tooth was displaced 15 mm coronally and the root apex faced buccally. Buccal and coronal bone augmentation and soft tissue enlargement were evident at reentry surgery. This techniqu

Oligodontia, the congenital absence of numerous teeth, presents many problems for both patient and therapist. Chief among these is the sequence and timing of orthodontic therapy, implant placement, and restorative dentistry. The absence of teeth can pose not only functional but psychosocial problems for young people. This report details a young woman who was diagnosed with oligodontia at age 9, treated using a multidisciplinary approach, and followed for 12 years.

PURPOSE: Currently, maxillary sinus floor (SF) elevation is based on off-the-shelf allogeneic, xenogeneic or synthetic bone augmentation materials (BAM) that are implanted via an open lateral sinus wall approach (OSFE). However, this invasive method is associated with postoperative complications caused by an inadequate blood supply of the alveolar ridge. Balloon-assisted procedures are minimal invasive alternatives with lower complication rates. The aim was to evaluate local new bone (NB) formation in the SF following the application of a particulate BAM (Easy graft) via two different SF eleva

Cigarette smoking is still considered a common habit. Of smokers, increased plaque accumulation, higher incidence of gingivitis and periodontitis, higher rate of tooth loss, and increased resorption of the alveolar ridge have been found in the oral cavity. Cigarette smoking may adversely affect wound healing, and, thus, jeopardize the success of bone grafting and dental implantation. Bone grafts and sinus lift operations are both common and well-documented procedures before dental implant placement. Heat as well as toxic by-products of cigarette smoking, such as nicotine, carbon monoxide, and

The application of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) in oral and maxillofacial surgery has been thoroughly studied in the last two decades. Currently, different types of PRP are applied in the clinical practice, being the presence or absence of leukocytes one of the classification criteria. However, there is poor evidence assessing the influence of the PRP composition in their efficacy. In this context, the aim of this narrative review is to compile the existing evidence covering the efficacy of PRP in oral and maxillofacial surgery, starting from a systematic literature search and to qualitatively d

As with other techniques, vertical distraction osteogenesis (VDO) can also induce complications. The case of a patient with a residual alveolar ridge in the symphyseal area of 8 mm is presented. After performing VDO, the patient returned at 1-day postoperatively complaining of pain and dislocation of the distractor device, due to a fracture of the lower mandibular segment on the right side. After removal of the distractor device and application of osteosynthesis plates, the patient returned 2 weeks later due to a second fracture of the lower segment, yet on the left side. After removing the os

This clinical article describes a case of dental rehabilitation using an implant-carrying plate system (EPITEC) for a patient with severely resorbed edentulous maxilla and microstomia. In this case, the presence of microstomia prevented bone augmentation procedures through an intraoral approach. Treatment using 2 endosseous implants inserted in the canine regions and an implant-supported overdenture was planned. However, endosseous implants were not feasible on the right side because of insufficient available bone volume. An implant-carrying plate system was then utilized on the right side. Fo

BACKGROUND: Zygomatic implant (ZI) is an effective method for restoring masticatory function and mid-facial appearance in patients with severe alveolar ridge resorption, avoiding complex bone augmentation. Dynamic navigation-assisted surgery has been introduced to improve ZI placement accuracy, with registration being a crucial step. However, the current registration method using fiducial screws is limited by their concentrated placement in the mouth, reducing accuracy around the zygomatic bone. This study aims to evaluate the accuracy and clinical outcomes of a novel minimally invasive regist

A multidisciplinary therapy used to treat a patient with a severe mucogingival deformity in the area of maxillary anterior teeth is presented. The simple technique uses an interocclusal appliance and elastic band for orthodontic extrusion to correct the mucogingival deformity and develop an implant site. This approach is designed to increase the amount of keratinized tissue and new alveolar bone, which are necessary for the development of an implant site. Clinical and radiographic examinations at the 5-year follow-up revealed a successful tooth replacement and improved esthetic appearance that

PURPOSE: The lateral ridge expansion technique is used to expand the narrow edentulous ridge for implant placement. The staged approach can be used to split the mandibular ridge to decrease the risk of malfracture during osteotomy. The present study reports the clinical results of a surgical technique that expands a narrow mandibular ridge using an immediate and a delayed lateral expansion technique.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 32 patients with a narrow edentulous posterior mandibular ridge of 2 to 4 mm were included in the present study, and 84 implants were placed. Of the 32 patients,
