The growing influence and importance of internationalization in higher education, especially in medical education, inspired anatomists at Columbia University New York, USA and at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, Germany, to start a novel international preclinical collaboration project. As part of the anatomy dissection course a group of volunteer medical students from Halle dissected selected areas of the human body with the help of an English, illustrated, iPad-run dissection script (American Dissector). Meanwhile the rest of the students worked with a traditional German text-ba

Patients with cleft palate have a high incidence of otitis media (OM), which, even after palatal repair, can persist and lead to auditory dysfunction. We aimed to identify what predisposes such patients to develop OM and correlate it with auditory function. We designed a prospective case-control study of adults who had had their cleft palates repaired in childhood. We examined the anatomy of the eustachian tube and the paratubal muscles of the soft palate with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), assessed auditory function, and correlated the results to evaluate the impact of the pathological ana

The gastrointestinal tract of the alpaca (Vicugna pacos) is most efficiently adapted to its habitat at high altitudes. Alpacas, just like ruminants, feed on hardly digestible forage. However, it has been demonstrated that the anatomy of the camelid digestive tract has developed independently of ruminants and not in homology to them. Despite a long history of domestication and an increasing number of animals worldwide, little research has been done on the intestinal anatomy of alpacas. The purpose of this study was to describe the anatomical features of the alpaca's intestines and to explain an

PURPOSE: Representation of anatomy appearance is one of the key problems in medical image analysis. An appearance model represents the anatomies with parametric forms, which are then vectorised for prior learning, segmentation and classification tasks.
METHODS: We propose a part-based parametric appearance model we refer to as a deformable appearance pyramid (DAP). The parts are delineated by multi-scale local feature pyramids extracted from an image pyramid. Each anatomy is represented by an appearance pyramid, with the variability within a population approximated by local translations of th

BACKGROUND: Anterolateral skull base surgery in the sellar and parasellar regions has always represented a technical challenge for neurosurgeons. The microscopic endoscope-assisted transmaxillosphenoidal approach (MEMSA) affords a direct surgical corridor free from critical skull base structures. Here we describe and critically evaluate the use of MEMSA to access the sellar and parasellar areas, in terms of surgical exposure and operability.
METHODS: Six cadaveric heads were examined. A stepwise dissection using MEMSA was performed. Relevant anatomy and surgical technique were critically desc

BACKGROUND: The lateral mesencephalic vein (LMV) represents an important connection between the infratentorial and supratentorial compartments. It joins the basal vein of Rosenthal and the petrosal system. In our experience with management of tentorial dural arteriovenous fistulas (DAVFs) we have often noted involvement of the lateral mesencephalic vein (LMV) in the venous drainage of these fistulas.
METHODS: We reviewed the clinical and angiographic findings of 26 patients with tentorial DAVFs to study the incidence and pattern of drainage through the LMV. In addition, we reviewed the pertin

It is currently widely accepted that the complexity of a species' social life is a major determinant of its brain complexity, as predicted by the social brain hypothesis. However, it remains a challenge to explain what social complexity exactly is and what the best corresponding measures of brain anatomy are. Absolute and relative size of the brain and of the neocortex have often been used as a proxy to predict cognitive performance. Here, we apply the logic of the social brain hypothesis to marine cleaning mutualism involving the genus Labroides. These wrasses remove ectoparasites from 'clien

BACKGROUND: To determine the impact of variant pancreatic arterial anatomy and overlap in regional perfusion on the interpretation of selective arterial calcium stimulation (SACST) with hepatic venous sampling for preoperative localization of occult insulinoma.
METHODS: An institutional review board-approved retrospective review was undertaken of 42 patients with surgically confirmed, occult insulinoma who underwent SACST from January 1996 to March 2014. Location of the insulinoma was predicted initially based on the biochemical results of SACST alone according to Doppman's criteria. Pancreat

Tracheobronchial compression of cardiovascular origin is an uncommon and frequently unrecognised cause of respiratory distress in children. The compression may be due to encircling vessels or dilated neighbouring cardiovascular structures. Bronchoscopy and detailed radiography, especially computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging, are among the most powerful diagnostic tools. Few previous reports have addressed the relationship between bronchoscopic findings and underlying cardiovascular anomalies. The objective of this study was to correlate bronchoscopic and radiographic findings in

BACKGROUND: Complications after thoracic surgery have well been established, pain being the most prominent. Intercostal nerves are mixed type nerves combining motor and sensory functions. This notion is not consistent with the incidence of PTPS compared to the incidence of muscle paresis or paralysis. We would hypothesize that abdominal wall paresis or paralysis is underdiagnosed.
METHODS: In our hospital, three patients developed abdominal wall paralysis after thoracic surgery and consequent nerve damage. Their cases are discussed, and a review of the literature was conducted concerning (int

BACKGROUND: The omasum absorb water, electrolytes, volatile fatty acids by regulating the flow of digesta from the reticulum to the abomasum. In the Jammu region, small ruminants are raised under various agro-climatic conditions. Sheep mainly graze, while goats primarily browse. Such differences in feeding habits influences anatomy of digestive tract, especially the omasum. Studying omasum structure helps explain differences in digestive efficiency, nutrient utilization, and environmental adaptation among these species.
AIMS: The present study aimed to compare anatomy of omasum in Bakerwali g

INTRODUCTION: Choledocholithiasis is challenging to treat in patients who have undergone Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB). Laparoscopic transcystic common bile duct exploration (LTCBDE) performed at the time of the cholecystectomy is an alternative treatment modality that has the potential to reduce hospital length of stay (LOS) and postoperative morbidity.
METHODS: This is an IRB-approved, single-academic institution retrospective cohort study analyzing electronic medical records of patients with RYGB anatomy who underwent LTCBDE for choledocholithiasis between 2021 and 2025. The primary outc

Identification and treatment of pregnancies at risk for preterm birth is a central challenge in obstetric research. Many of the known causes of preterm birth originate from mechanical failure in reproductive tissues. To better understand the biomechanical environment of the gravid uterus and its potential contribution to preterm birth, this computational study presents a parametric method for modeling maternal reproductive anatomy during the early second trimester. A finite element modeling approach was built using existing sonographic measurements from early second-trimester maternal anatomy

BACKGROUND: The posterior maxilla and skull base is a region with a complex anatomy. Accurate resection of the pterygoid plate is critical during a maxillectomy procedure. However, there is a paucity of functional and anatomical studies on the pterygoid plate and skull base. This study aimed to investigate functional anatomy of the pterygoid plate and its surrounding structures in the posterior maxilla to provide a better understanding of surgical procedures in this region.
METHODS: 3D software was used to measure 3D distances, angles, and areas of key anatomical landmarks on CT images of 100

OBJECTIVE: Sialendoscopy is a minimally invasive diagnostic and therapeutic technique used in the treatment of various salivary gland diseases. To date, there are very few suitable training models other than the pig's head, which has been used at the European Sialendoscopy Training Center for 22 years. The goal of this study was to describe an ovine model for sialendoscopy training and compare the ovine model's to the human anatomy. We propose a step-by-step approach for sialendoscopy training using this ex-vivo model.
METHODS: The anatomy of the ovine salivary ducts and glands was assessed b

Intraoperative identification of head and neck cancer tissue is essential to achieve complete tumor resection and mitigate tumor recurrence. Mesoscopic fluorescence lifetime imaging (FLIm) of intrinsic tissue fluorophores emission has demonstrated the potential to demarcate the extent of the tumor in patients undergoing surgical procedures of the oral cavity and the oropharynx. Here, we report FLIm-based classification methods using standard machine learning models that account for the diverse anatomical and biochemical composition across the head and neck anatomy to improve tumor region ident

PURPOSE: Growth hormone (GH) has an important role in intestinal barrier function, and abnormalities in GH action have been associated with intestinal complications. Yet, the impact of altered GH on intestinal gross anatomy and morphology remains unclear.
METHODS: This study investigated the influence of GH signaling on gross anatomy, morphology, and fibrosis by characterizing the small and large intestines in male and female bovine growth hormone transgenic (bGH) mice and GH receptor gene-disrupted (GHR-/-) mice at multiple timepoints.
RESULTS: The length, weight, and circumference of the s

OBJECTIVE: The extreme lateral supracerebellar infratentorial (ELSI) approach has the potential to access several distinct anatomical regions that are otherwise difficult to reach. We have illustrated the surgical anatomy through cadaveric dissections and provided an extensive review of the literature to highlight the versatility of this approach, its limits, and comparisons with alternative approaches.
METHODS: The surgical anatomy of the ELSI has been described using 1 adult-injected cadaveric head. Formalized noninjected brain specimens were also dissected to describe the brain parenchymal
