Triple soil transmitted helminths in a case of aluminium phosphide poisoning.

Soil transmitted helminth (STH) infections remain prevalent in India despite the ongoing deworming program. Here, we report a case of triple infection of Ascaris lumbricoides, Ancylostoma duodenale, and Strongyloides stercoralis, in a young asymptomatic and apparently immunocompetent female presenting with aluminium phosphide poisoning. Except for severe anaemia, the only other indicators of chronic infection were occasional abdominal pain and self-limiting loose stools. She was successfully treated for her conditions. This case highlights that despite regular deworming programs in children, S

Isolation of anti-Ancylostoma-secreted protein 5 (ASP5) antibody from a naïve antibody phage library.

Ancylostoma species are parasitic nematodes that release a multitude of proteins to manipulate host immune responses to facilitate their survival. Among the released proteins, Ancylostoma-secreted protein 5 (ASP5) plays a pivotal role in mediating host-parasite interactions, making it a promising target for interventions against canine hookworm infections caused by Ancylostoma species. Antibody phage display, a widely used method for generating human monoclonal antibodies was employed in this study. A bacterial expression system was used to produce ASP5 for biopanning. A single-chain fragment

The mitochondrial genome of Ancylostoma tubaeforme from cats in China.

Ancylostoma tubaeforme may infect canids, felids and humans, and pose a potential risk to public health. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) techniques were used to amplify the complete mitochondrial (mt) genome sequence of A. tubaeforme from cats and to analyse its sequence characteristics after molecular identification based on the internal transcribed spacer ITS1+ sequence. The results show that the complete mt genome sequence (GenBank accession number KY070315) of A. tubaeforme from cats was 13,730 bp in length, including 12 protein-coding genes, 22 transfer RNA (tRNA) genes, two ribosomal RNA

No impact of strongylid infections on the detection of Plasmodium spp. in faeces of western lowland gorillas and eastern chimpanzees.

BACKGROUND: Although a high genetic diversity of Plasmodium spp. circulating in great apes has been revealed recently due to non-invasive methods enabling detection in faecal samples, little is known about the actual mechanisms underlying the presence of Plasmodium DNA in faeces. Great apes are commonly infected by strongylid nematodes, including hookworms, which cause intestinal bleeding. The impact of strongylid infections on the detection of Plasmodium DNA in faeces was assessed in wild, western, lowland gorillas from Dzanga Sangha Protected Areas, Central African Republic and eastern chimp

Prevalence of potentially zoonotic gastrointestinal parasites in canine faeces in Ibadan, Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Humans can get infected through direct or indirect contact with infective stages of zoonotic parasites shed to the environment through dog faeces. OBJECTIVES: This study was designed to investigate the presence of gastrointestinal parasites present in dog faeces shed on the street of Ibadan metropolis, one of the largest cities in Africa. METHODS: Twenty-three locations were randomly selected using grid-sampling method. A total of 203 faecal samples collected from the streets of selected areas were processed for detection of helminth eggs and protozoan oocysts using flotation tec

The association of parasitic infections in pregnancy and maternal and fetal anemia: a cohort study in coastal Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Relative contribution of these infections on anemia in pregnancy is not certain. While measures to protect pregnant women against malaria have been scaling up, interventions against helminthes have received much less attention. In this study, we determine the relative impact of helminthes and malaria on maternal anemia. METHODS: A prospective observational study was conducted in coastal Kenya among a cohort of pregnant women who were recruited at their first antenatal care (ANC) visit and tested for malaria, hookworm, and other parasitic infections and anemia at enrollment. All wo

Confirmation of sex-specific transcripts from Ancylostoma caninum adult worms by semi-quantitative RT-PCR.

In a previous work Ancylostoma caninum sex-specific genes had being identified, however without confirmation, by using an non specific RT-PCR comparing male and female cDNA. In this work more fragments had been identified and a semi-quantitative RT-PCR carried out in order to confirm the sex-specific character of the transcripts obtained. Four fragments were confirmed as sex-specific or as being expressed more in one sex than the other.

Efficacy of nitroscanate against naturally acquired infection with Ancylostoma caninum, Dipylidium caninum, and Trichuris vulpis in dogs.

Eighteen dogs with naturally acquired helminth infections were used to evaluate the efficacy of nitroscanate against Ancylostoma caninum, Dipylidium caninum, and Trichuris vulpis. Approximately 15 minutes before treatment, the dogs were given 100 to 200 g of canned dog food. Ten dogs were treated with nitroscanate (50 mg/kg of body weight, PO), and 8 dogs were given placebo tablets PO. The dogs were euthanatized and necropsied 10 days after treatment and helminths were recovered from the small intestine and cecum. On the basis of the number of worms recovered from treated dogs vs the number re

Ancylostoma ceylanicum in the hamster: observations on the host-parasite relationship during primary infection.

The course of primary infection with a hamster-adapted strain of Ancylostoma ceylanicum was studied in inbred DSN and randomly bred WO/GD and WO/CR hamsters. Infective larvae were administered orally and began to develop in the small intestine without embarking on a tissue migration. Only the occasional larva was detected in other organ sites. It was concluded that the developing larvae moulted on days 3-4 and again to the pre-adult stage about 9-11 days post-infection. Worm burdens in infected hamsters were stable for at least 11 weeks after infection. There was no sudden expulsive phase and

Human antibody responses against schistosomal antigens. I. Antibodies from patients with Ancylostoma, Ascaris lumbricoides or Schistosoma mansoni infections react with schistosome antigens.

Sera of patients with either hookworm infections or ascariasis, who are from areas nonendemic for Schistosoma mansoni, contain antibody reactivity against extracts of S. mansoni schistosomula. Such patients with hookworm, but not those with Ascaris lumbricoides, also express considerable antibody activity against intact schistosomula and schistosomular membrane preparations. Sera from patients with schistosomiasis mansoni also contain these activities. Because these three helminthic infections often occur in the same areas, and concomitantly in patients, anti-schistosomular reactivity should n

The response of captive rodents to the migration of Ancylostoma caninum larvae.

The distribution of the larvae of Ancylostoma caninum in tissues of captive wild rodents (Rattus rattus) and the leucocytic and behavioural responses of these rodents were studied after experimental oral infection. There was a wide distribution of larvae in tissues with a preponderance of the larvae in the skeletal muscles of the anterior part of the body in older infection. The rats responded by an elevation of total leucocytes and eosinophils in blood, alternation of locomotory activity and behavioural dominance that may have a correlation with predation and epidemiology of A. caninum in a s

[Comparative value of egg size and larval morphology in the diagnosis of species of ancylostomids. Existence of abnormal larvae].

The values of eggs mensuration and results of coproculture have been compared for the identification of species of ancylostomia infestations. Results are confirming the necessity of coproculture for this diagnosis when the size of eggs is not inferior to 61 mu or superior to 72 mu. One case of morphological anomaly of some strongyloïd larvae of Necator americanus has been related.

Fenbendazole treatment of pregnant bitches to reduce prenatal and lactogenic infections of Toxocara canis and Ancylostoma caninum in pups.

A granulated formulation of fenbendazole was tested in a total of 23 treated and control, pregnant, parasite-free Beagle bitches experimentally infected with Toxocara canis and Ancylostoma caninum. The drug was administered to each treated bitch once daily in canned dog food at a dosage of 50 mg/kg body weight. Each of 2 treatment regimens tested was initiated on the 40th day of pregnancy. One regimen involved daily treatment continuing through the 14th postpartum day, and it resulted in 89% fewer ascarids and 99% fewer hookworms in pups born to medicated bitches, as compared with pups born to

Hookworm disease: host-pathogen biology.

The hallmark of hookworm infection, a common helminthic disease, is iron deficiency anemia. The development of anemia is dependent on the intensity of infection, the species of hookworm, and the ability of the host to resist infection and to maintain adequate stores of iron. When conditions are appropriate, the incidence of anemia caused by hookworm is high and has a significant economic impact since it results in a reduction of worker productivity. Loss of blood is caused by direct ingestion of red cells and by tissue trauma produced by worm attachment and feeding. This focal trauma may invol

Experimental infection with Ancylostoma caninum larvae in mice. V. Serum protein pattern during infection with various doses.

Serum protein patterns of Swiss albino mice during Ancylostoma caninum infection with varying dose levels were studied electrophoretically. There was a significant decrease in albumin associated with a corresponding increase in beta globulin in all the infected groups. Gamma globulin decreased significantly in all groups except the one infected with a challenge dose of 4000 larvae. Maximum changes occurred on day 31, 15, 9, 15 and 6 when mice were infected with 250, 500, 1000, 2000 and 4000 larvae, respectively. There was a significant negative correlation between albumin and the infective dos
