Modifying dysfunctional beliefs in social anxiety disorder with an emotion-focused approach-avoidance modification training - a pilot study.

OBJECTIVE: Dysfunctional beliefs play an important role in social anxiety disorder (SAD). Modifying the appraisal of such beliefs may be facilitated through emotion-based approach-avoidance modification trainings (eAAMTs). This study aimed to examine the feasibility and therapeutic potential of an eAAMT for SAD in a randomized-controlled pilot-study. METHOD: N = 30 participants with SAD were randomly allocated to an eAAMT-SAD, a non-active control condition, or a swipe-control condition (n = 28 analyzed). Participants in the eAAMT-SAD-condition received four 30-min-sessions of eAAMT-SAD withi

The DYX2 locus and neurochemical signaling genes contribute to speech sound disorder and related neurocognitive domains.

A major milestone of child development is the acquisition and use of speech and language. Communication disorders, including speech sound disorder (SSD), can impair a child's academic, social and behavioral development. Speech sound disorder is a complex, polygenic trait with a substantial genetic component. However, specific genes that contribute to SSD remain largely unknown. To identify associated genes, we assessed the association of the DYX2 dyslexia risk locus and markers in neurochemical signaling genes (e.g., nicotinic and dopaminergic) with SSD and related endophenotypes. We first per

How Does GPi-DBS Affect Speech in Primary Dystonia?

BACKGROUND: Globus pallidus internus deep brain stimulation (GPi-DBS) can be an effective treatment for primary dystonia. However, speech disorders have previously been reported as a common possible side effect of the treatment. OBJECTIVES: To study possible deterioration of speech after GPi-DBS and describe this in different dimensions. METHODS: Speech was systematically evaluated in 15 patients with predominant torticollis and GPi-DBS. Each patient was tested twice within one day in two stimulation conditions: ON-DBS vs. OFF-DBS. Speech analyses comprised both function-oriented (perceptual

The Cortico-Cortical and Subcortical Circuits of the Human Brain Language Centers Including the Dual Limbic and Language Functioning Fiber Tracts.

Background/Objectives: In recent years, MRI-based diffusion-weighted tractography techniques have uncovered additional white matter pathways that have significant roles in language processing and production. In this review, we aim to outline the major language centers of the brain and major language pathways along with association tracts that serve dual roles in both the language and limbic systems. According to the current dual-stream model of language processing, the brain's language network is organized into a dorsal stream, responsible for mapping sound to articulation, and a ventral strea

Voice and Speech Characteristics in Patients With Parkinson's Disease.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurological disorder frequently associated with hypokinetic dysarthria, characterized by impairments in voice, articulation, and prosody. AIMS: This study investigated speech and voice characteristics in Bosnian-speaking individuals with PD using objective acoustic and temporal measures derived from the speech signal. METHOD: Participants with PD and age- and gender-matched healthy controls completed sustained vowel phonation, prolonged fricatives (/s/ and /z/), and diadochokinetic (DDK) syllable repetition tasks. All variables were obta

Acoustic Measures Capture Speech Dysfunction in Spinocerebellar Ataxia.

OBJECTIVE: Spinocerebellar ataxias (SCA) are hereditary cerebellar degenerative disorders with a common feature of dysarthria, involving impaired phonatory and articulatory control of speech, thereby affecting social communication. In this study, we investigated whether acoustic measures could objectively measure speech dysfunction and identify common indicators across SCA types 1, 2, and 3. METHODS: We recorded speech from 24 SCA patients and 24 age-matched controls during connected speech and sustained vowel tasks. Speech was assessed using the Acoustic Voice Quality Index (AVQI) and sub-me

Speech Sound Disorder Treatment Approaches Used by School-Based Clinicians: An Application of the Experience Sampling Method.

PURPOSE: Children with speech sound disorders (SSDs) comprise a large portion of caseloads for school-based speech-language pathologists (SLPs). Despite the existence of several evidence-based SSD intervention approaches, the translation from research to practice is often limited by ecological validity because of various factors unique to school settings (e.g., scheduling constraints, caseload size, child availability). The purpose of this study was to use the experience sampling method (ESM) to examine the current practices of school-based SLPs when treating children with SSDs on their caselo

Cleft palate only: current concepts.

Cleft palate only (CPO) is one of the most common congenital malformations worldwide. The etiopathogenesis of CPO is not completely understood. Environmental factors, such as smoking, alcohol consumption, intake of drugs during pregnancy, advanced paternal age, have been demonstrated to be a risk of CPO, but conflicting results have also been published. Insufficient intake of folic acid during the pregnancy has been suggested to increase the risk for CPO. The demonstrated risk for siblings and the higher risk for monozygotic twins suggest a genetic etiopathogenesis for CPO. In some cases of CP

Early thimerosal exposure and neuropsychological outcomes at 7 to 10 years.

BACKGROUND: It has been hypothesized that early exposure to thimerosal, a mercury-containing preservative used in vaccines and immune globulin preparations, is associated with neuropsychological deficits in children. METHODS: We enrolled 1047 children between the ages of 7 and 10 years and administered standardized tests assessing 42 neuropsychological outcomes. (We did not assess autism-spectrum disorders.) Exposure to mercury from thimerosal was determined from computerized immunization records, medical records, personal immunization records, and parent interviews. Information on potential

Word production inconsistency of Singaporean-English-speaking adolescents with Down Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: The nature of speech disorders in individuals with Down Syndrome (DS) remains controversial despite various explanations put forth in the literature to account for the observed speech profiles. A high level of word production inconsistency in children with DS has led researchers to query whether the inconsistency continues into adolescence, and if the inconsistency stems from inconsistent phonological disorder (IPD) or childhood apraxia of speech (CAS). Of the studies that have been published, most suggest that the speech profile of individuals with DS is delayed, while a few recen

Longitudinal prediction of psychosocial functioning outcomes: Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, Section-II personality disorders versus alternative model personality dysfunction and traits.

We aimed to determine and compare the longitudinal predictive power of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fifth edition's (DSM-5) two models of personality disorder (PD) for multiple clinically relevant outcomes. A sample of 600 community-dwelling adults-half recruited by calling randomly selected phone numbers and screening-in for high-risk for personality pathology and half in treatment for mental health problems-completed an extensive battery of self-report and interview measures of personality pathology, clinical symptoms, and psychosocial functioning. Of these, 503 ret

Exploring the dynamics of aphasic word production using the picture-word interference task: a case study.

In this study, we use an auditory picture-word interference task to examine an anomic individual, NP. NP produced semantic errors in picture naming, but his comprehension was relatively well preserved. In the task, pictures to be named were accompanied by semantically, phonologically or unrelated distractors, presented at onsets ranging from -200ms (before target) to +400ms (after target). Naming latencies were measured. A group of 12 older controls showed semantic interference (slower latencies with semantic than with unrelated distractors), which was significant at -200ms, and steadily dimin

A genome scan in multigenerational families with dyslexia: Identification of a novel locus on chromosome 2q that contributes to phonological decoding efficiency.

Dyslexia is a common and complex developmental disorder manifested by unexpected difficulty in learning to read. Multiple different measures are used for diagnosis, and may reflect different biological pathways related to the disorder. Impaired phonological decoding (translation of written words without meaning cues into spoken words) is thought to be a core deficit. We present a genome scan of two continuous measures of phonological decoding ability: phonemic decoding efficiency (PDE) and word attack (WA). PDE measures both accuracy and speed of phonological decoding, whereas WA measures accu

Effects of transitory lingual nerve impairment on speech: an acoustic study of diphthong sounds.

PURPOSE: The effects of lingual nerve impairment on the phonetic quality of diphthongs were studied by analyzing changes in their main acoustic features when anesthetic was injected into the lingual nerve to partly block the normal neural feedback mechanisms in speech. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The speech material consisted of 8 diphthongs in word context produced by 7 male speakers. Every utterance was repeated 10 times using normal speech rate and intonation with and without the anesthesia (Ultracain D-Suprarenin, 0.8 mL; Aventis Pharma Deutscland GmpH, Frankfurt am Main, Germany). In addition,

Motion analysis of the mandible: guidelines for standardized analysis of computer-assisted recording of condylar movements.

Mandibular movement recording has long been established as the method for the physiological design of indirect dental restorations. Condylar movement recording is the basis for individual, patient-specific programming of partially or fully adjustable articulators. The settings derived from these recordings can generally be used in both traditional mechanical and electronic virtual articulators. For many years, condylar movement recordings have also provided useful information about morphological conditions in the temporomandibular joints (TMJs) of patients with masticatory system dysfunction b
