Customised vestibular rehabilitation with the addition of virtual reality based therapy in the management of persistent postural-perceptual dizziness.

OBJECTIVE: Visual-vestibular mismatch patients experience persistent postural and perceptual dizziness. Previous studies have shown the benefit of vestibular rehabilitation for visual desensitisation using gaze stabilisation exercises and optokinetic stimulation. This study assessed the benefit of customised vestibular rehabilitation with visual desensitisation and virtual reality based therapy rehabilitation in the management of patients with persistent postural-perceptual dizziness. METHODS: This retrospective study included 100 patients with Situational Characteristic Questionnaire scores

Complications in sinus lifting procedures: Classification and management.

Open and closed sinus lifting procedures are predictable methods to augment the bone needed for appropriate implant placement in the posteri … ht. However, it may also be associated with specific complications, including membrane perforation, benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, and implant displacement to the sinus cavity. New technologies have been proposed to reduce these complications and comorbidities associated with conventional sinus lifting procedures, such as the use of piezoelectric devices and hydraulic sinus li …

Bone Mineral Density in Patients Suffering from Ménière's Disease.

INTRODUCTION: Previous studies have reported an association between reduced bone mineral density and the occurrence of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, balance impairment, and saccular dysfunction. Furthermore, the results of recent animal studies have raised the possibility that vestibular dysfunction could affect bone remodeling and bone mass. The goal of the study was to compare bone mineral density of patients suffering from definite Ménière's disease to that of a matched control group. METHODS: We conducted a case-control cross-sectional study in a tertiary referral center. The stud…

Dizziness and Imbalance in the Elderly: Age-related Decline in the Vestibular System.

Dizziness and imbalance are amongst the most common complaints in older people, and are a growing public health concern since they put older people at a significantly higher risk of falling. Although the causes of dizziness in older people are multifactorial, peripheral vestibular dysfunction is one of the most frequent causes. Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo is the most frequent form of vestibular dysfunction in the elderly, followed by Meniere's disease. Every factor associated with the maintenance of postural stability deteriorates during aging. Age-related deterioration of peripheral …

Ultrastructural changes in otoconia of osteoporotic rats.

The etiology of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) remains obscure in many cases and women are affected more often than men. A recent prospective study, performed in women >50 years of age suffering from recurrent BPPV, showed associated osteopenia or osteoporosis in a large percentage of these patients. These results suggested the possible relationship between recurrent BPPV and a decreased fixation of calcium in bone in women >50 years. To test this hypothesis, an experimental study was performed in adult female rats. Utricular otoconia of female rats in which osteopenia/osteoporosi…

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether, in patients with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), the canalith repositioning procedure performed with vibration applied over the mastoid bone of the affected ear is more effective in resolving the symptoms and preventing recurrence of BPPV than the procedure performed without vibration. DESIGN: Retrospective case review. SETTING: Tertiary referral center. PATIENTS: Ninety-four patients diagnosed as having BPPV involving the posterior semicircular canal. Blood Biomarkers for the Diagnosis of Peripheral Causes of Vestibular Syndrome: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Peripheral vestibular syndromes (PVS) encompass disorders such as benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, vestibular neuritis, and Ménière's disease, presenting with vertiginous symptoms. Existing diagnostic approaches rely on clinical and vestibular function tests but have overlapping presentations and invasive investigations. Blood-based biomarkers may offer a minimally invasive diagnostic alternative. OBJECTIVES: This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to synthesize current evidence on blood-based biomarkers to identify PVS compared with controls. METHODS: A literature sea…

In subjects with peripheral vestibular disease and controls, we assessed: 1. The relationship between spatial anxiety and perceived stress, and 2. The combined contribution of spatial anxiety, spatial perspective-taking, and individual cofactors to dizziness-related handicap. 309 adults participated in the study (153 with and 156 without peripheral vestibular disease), including patients with bilateral vestibular deficiency, unilateral deficiency (evolution <3 or ≥3 months), Meniere's disease, and Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo. Assessments included: general health, personal habits, spat…

Introduction  Vestibular pathologies cause physical and psychological symptoms, as well as cognitive problems. Objective  To evaluate the deterioration in sleep quality associated with vestibular pathologies. Methods  The Dizziness Handicap Inventory (DHI), the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and the Limits of Stability test (LOS) were applied to the participants. Results  We included 25 patients with Meniere's disease (MD), 22 patients with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), 21 patients with unilateral peripheral vestibular loss (UPVL), 23…

CONCLUSIONS: Early implant failure after transcrestal sinus elevation showed significant direct cor …

Vestibular migraine in children and adolescents: clinical findings and laboratory tests.

INTRODUCTION: Vestibular migraine (VM) is the most common cause of episodic vertigo in children. We summarize the clinical findings and laboratory test results in a cohort of children and adolescents with VM. We discuss the limitations of current classification criteria for dizzy children. METHODS: A retrospective chart analysis was performed on 118 children with migraine related vertigo at a tertiary care center. Patients were grouped in the following categories: (1) definite vestibular migraine (dVM); (2) probable vestibular migraine (pVM); (3) suspected vestibular migraine (sVM); (4) benig

Dysautonomia and Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) in the ENT Clinic: Differentiating Orthostatic Dizziness From Vestibular Migraine and Persistent Postural-Perceptual Dizziness (PPPD).

One of the most common complaints in ENT clinics is dizziness. Although most cases are caused by vestibular neuritis and benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), a significant number of patients experience non-vestibular dizziness. One non-vestibular cause is postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), which presents with symptoms similar to vestibular migraine (VM) and persistent postural perceptual dizziness (PPPD). Dizziness from POTS is related to dysautonomia rather than the vestibular system. In otolaryngology, understanding the autonomic nature of non-vestibular dizziness is i…

[Studies on the largest Lyapunov exponents of the standing posture in patients with unilateral vestibular dysfunction].

UNLABELLED: In the present study, we investigated the body sway in patients with unilateral vestibular dysfunction by the largest Lyapunov exponents using a chaotic time series analysis. The largest Lyapunov exponent is regarded as a parameter indexing an orbital instability. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Subjects consisted of 55 normal healthy subjects, 11 patients diagnosed as having vestibular neuritis (VN), 6 patients diagnosed as having sudden deafness (SD) with vertigo, 23 patients diagnosed as having Meniere disease (MD), 11 patients diagnosed as having benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (B…
