Real-time optical fiber sensors based on light diffusing microlens arrays.

The applications of optical fibers are impeded in implantable medical diagnostics due to incompatibility with biological tissues, and immune reaction in vivo. The utilization of biocompatible materials to construct a photonic sensing platform can reduce the immune response in in vivo medical diagnostics. Here, we developed real-time optical fiber sensors to determine the volumetric modulation of stimuli-responsive polymers. Asymmetric microlens structures were replicated on stimuli-sensitive hydrogels as stand-alone sensors and were chemically attached to the tips of silica and biocompatible o…

Melamine phosphate-modified magnetic chitosan: a novel biocompatible catalyst for the synthesis of biological tetrahydrodipyrazolopyridine and pyrazolopyranopyrimidine derivatives.

A novel biocompatible composite was fabricated by the functionalization of magnetic chitosan with the melamine phosphate (MP) ionic compound to serve as a recoverable and bifunctional catalyst, aiming at the diversity-oriented generation of biological tetrahydropyrazolopyridine and pyrazolopyrimidine derivatives. This involved a meticulously orchestrated reaction, exploiting the in situ generated pyrazole alongside aromatic aldehydes, ammonium acetate, and (thio) barbituric acid. The present work manifests outstanding advantages, offering a novel and great method for the optimal synthesis of t

Photodegradable iron(III) cross-linked alginate gels.

Biocompatible photoresponsive materials are of interest for targeted drug delivery, tissue engineering, 2D and 3D protein patterning, and other biomedical applications. We prepared light degradable hydrogels using a natural alginate polysaccharide cross-linked with iron(III) cations. The "hard" iron(III) cations used to cross-link the alginate hydrogel were found to undergo facile photoreduction to "soft" iron(II) cations in the presence of millimolar concentrations of sodium lactate. The "soft" iron(II) cations have a decreased ability to cross-link the alginate which results in dissolution o

Design of experiment for optimization of plasma-polymerized octafluorocyclobutane coating on very high aspect ratio silicon molds.

As-fabricated deep reactive ion etched (DRIE) silicon mold with very high aspect ratio (>10) feature patterns is unsuitable for poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) replication because of the strong interaction between the Si surface and the replica and the corrugated mold sidewalls. The silicon mold can be conveniently passivated via plasma polymerization of octafluorocyclobutane (C4F8), which is also employed in the DRIE process itself, to enable the mold to be used repeatedly. To optimize the passivation conditions, we have undertaken a Box-Behnken experimental design on the basis of three passiva

Initial and follow-up results of the Tenax coronary stent.

The Tenax coronary stent is laser sculpted from high precision 316 L stainless steel using advanced production procedures. An a-SiC: H (hydrogen-rich amorphous silicon carbide) coating reduces its thrombogenicity and improves its biocompatibility. From April to July 1998, 266 stents were implanted in 241 patients (aged 62.7 +/- 10.5 years) in five centers. The clinical indication for intervention was unstable angina (33.2%) and recent myocardial infarction (29.5%) in many cases. Most lesions (53.8%) had complex characteristics (Class B2 or C). The target vessel was the LAD in 42.5% and the rig

Size-controlled hydroxyapatite nanoparticles as self-organized organic-inorganic composite materials.

This paper presents some results concerning the size-controlled hydroxyapatite nanoparticles obtained in aqueous media in a biopolymer matrix from soluble precursors salts. Taking the inspiration from nature, where composite materials made of a polymer matrix and inorganic fillers are often found, e.g. bone, shell of crustaceans, shell of eggs, etc., the feasibility on making composite materials containing chitosan and nanosized hydroxyapatite was investigated. A stepwise co-precipitation approach was used to obtain different types of composites by means of different ratio between components.

Hamster cheek-pouch testing of dental soft polymers.

The hamster cheek pouch provides a suitable model system for the mucous-membrane irritation testing of dental materials. Poor retention of materials or difficulties in histopathological interpretation caused by surgical artifacts have been reported in published techniques. We describe a new "pouch-in-pouch" technique for mucous membrane irritation tests. The retention rate of polymer discs was 97% and 87% at 14 and 35 days, respectively. Clear differentiation was obtained between the tissue reaction to the test materials and the surgical procedure. Polymer discs containing dibutyltin diacetate

Catechol Derivative-Based Bioadhesives: Molecular Design for Precision Medical Adhesion.

Acute tissue injuries demand bioadhesives with strong wet adhesion, biocompatibility, and mechanical adaptability. While mussel-inspired catechol-based adhesives hold promise, current designs often neglect the role of molecular diversity in tuning cohesion-adhesion dynamics. Inspired by the hierarchical branching of trees, where branch length and position determine fruit composition, we developed a structurally tunable bioadhesive platform by grafting five DOPA-derived catechol derivatives-varying in side-chain length and substituents-onto polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) via esterification. Computatio

Advances in Microenvironment-Responsive Biomaterials for Spinal Cord Injury Repair.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) often leads to permanent motor and sensory functional loss, accompanied by a dysfunctional pathological microenvironment. Pathologically, secondary injuries trigger a series of physical and chemical signals, including dysregulated pH, elevated ROS, increased enzyme activity, excessive inflammation, and altered biophysical cues. To date, implanting microenvironment-responsive biomaterials at the SCI lesion site has been shown to ameliorate the pathological microenvironment by recognizing and neutralizing these signals. Moreover, by exploiting disease-specific signals as
