In patients with rectoceles and obstructed defecation syndrome, surgery should be the option of last resort.

BACKGROUND: The indications for operation in patients with obstructed defecation syndrome (ODS) with rectocele are not well defined. METHODS: A total of 90 female patients with ODS and rectocele were prospectively evaluated and treated with fiber supplements and biofeedback training. Univariate and multivariate regression was used to determine factors predictive of failing medical management. RESULTS: Obstructive symptoms were the most prevalent presenting complaint (82.2%). Ultimately, 71.1% of patients responded to medical management and biofeedback. Multivariate regression analysis sugges

Observation and execution of upper-limb movements as a tool for rehabilitation of motor deficits in paretic stroke patients: protocol of a randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Evidence exist that motor observation activates the same cortical motor areas that are involved in the performance of the observed actions. The so called "mirror neuron system" has been proposed to be responsible for this phenomenon. We employ this neural system and its capability to re-enact stored motor representations as a tool for rehabilitating motor control. In our new neurorehabilitative schema (videotherapy) we combine observation of daily actions with concomitant physical training of the observed actions focusing on the upper limbs. Following a pilot study in chronic patie

Hydrodistention plus bladder training versus hydrodistention for the treatment of interstitial cystitis.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the efficacy of hydrodistention (HD) followed by bladder training (BT) versus HD alone in patients with interstitial cystitis (IC). METHODS: A total of 70 patients with IC were included and randomly assigned to two groups: one treated with HD (HD group) and the other treated with HD plus BT (HD plus BT group). Each patient was followed up using a weekly diary for 8 weeks after HD and monthly thereafter for 6 months after HD. Evaluation parameters included age, duration of IC in years, how many doctors visited before treatment, urgency, bladder pain, daytime voided volume

Outcome of biofeedback-assisted relaxation for pain in adults with cerebral palsy: preliminary findings.

Chronic pain is a common secondary problem associated with cerebral palsy (CP). This pain may be due to the musculoskeletal problems that often accompany CP, including spasticity, scoliosis, and bony deformity. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of biofeedback-assisted relaxation training on self-reported pain and muscle tension in 3 adults with CP using a multiple baseline design across subjects. Two of 3 participants reported decreases in their pain experiences posttreatment. Their subjective reports, however, did not correspond with physiological changes. Complications i

Fecal incontinence: evaluation and treatment.

Fecal incontinence affects men and women of all ages, leading to personal disability and high financial costs. The evaluation of the patient should clarify the pathophysiology of the symptoms and provide guidance in choosing the appropriate treatment. A comprehensive history and physical examination including endoscopic assessment is able to identify the cause of most cases of fecal incontinence. If necessary, functional methods can be used to confirm the diagnosis. Patient selection for suitable treatment is most important and should be based on clinical and physiologic findings. Conservative

Auditory backward-masking performance by children who stutter and its relation to dysfluency rate.

The fluency of people who stutter is affected markedly when auditory feedback is altered, suggesting that stuttering may be associated with hearing. Peripheral hearing problems, however, are no more common in people who stutter than in those who do not. Performance was investigated in a task that involves central auditory processing (backward masking). Children who stuttered had deficits in backward masking (indicated by higher thresholds) compared with a group of fluent control children. The backward-masking thresholds were positively correlated with frequency of stuttering.

Outcome of biofeedback for faecal incontinence.

BACKGROUND: Biofeedback has been reported to improve or eliminate symptoms in approximately 70 per cent of patients with faecal incontinence. However, it is unknown which patients respond in relation to the different symptomatic types of faecal incontinence and the different structural sphincter aetiologies. METHODS: One hundred consecutive patients (84 women; median age 49 years) who completed biofeedback treatment were prospectively characterized by symptoms and by structural integrity of the internal and external anal sphincters as assessed endosonographically (87 patients). Patients under

Improved ankle function in children with cerebral palsy after computer-assisted motor learning.

The effect of biofeedback training on ankle function was studied in young children with cerebral palsy (CP) during a pilot study and a 6-week follow-up study. Patients underwent range of motion (ROM) and ankle dorsiflexor (DF) strength training in a laboratory 3 days per week, receiving auditory and visual feedback. An at-home programme used portable EMG units to help train DF muscle recruitment on the remaining days. Independent outcome measures included DF strength, active ROM, and tapping ability pretraining and 6 weeks and 14 months posttraining. Tapping ability increased significantly in

Efficacy of biofeedback, when included with pelvic floor muscle exercise treatment, for genuine stress incontinence.

UNLABELLED: We performed a randomized clinical trial on the efficacy of physical therapy on genuine stress incontinence. STUDY OBJECTIVE: "Is a physical therapeutical training program (pelvic floor muscle training) combined with biofeedback, more effective than the same program without biofeedback in patients with mild or moderate stress incontinence?" Forty-four patients were referred by a general practitioner or a urologist. After informed consent, 40 patients were randomized in an exercises and biofeedback group (BF), or treated with exercises exclusively (pelvic floor muscle training = PF

[Acupuncture therapy in the outpatients-department of the University Clinic Heidelberg (author's transl)].

Encouraged by the good results obtained using acupuncture anaesthesia, we started therapeutic acupuncture in our institute of anaesthesiology four years ago. In the meantime acupuncture is as important a therapeutic method in our out-patients department as are therapeutic local anaesthesia, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation and biofeedback. The results in 520 patients who have been treated with acupuncture for different diseases are reported. The success of treatment, the number of sessions and the recurrence-rate within one and a half years are discussed for the different diseases.

Comparison of biofeedback pulse wave velocity and progressive relaxation on essential hypertensives.

In a study undertaken to evaluate the clinical effectiveness of two behavioral treatments for essential hypertension (biofeedback on arterial pulse-wave velocity and progressive relaxation) 24 hypertensive subjects were randomly assigned to either a relaxation or biofeedback treatment group for 5 weekly sessions. In a second stage of the study 16 of the original subjects received both biofeedback and relaxation treatments during 5 additional weekly sessions. Results indicated that biofeedback and relaxation were equally effective in initial lowering of blood pressure in hypertensives. Although

Improving Foot Rocker via Robot-Resisted Gait Training With Self-Awareness Biofeedback in Adults With Cerebral Palsy.

Cerebral palsy (CP) is a non-progressive neurological disorder that impairs motor control and coordination due to brain injury or abnormalities before, during, or shortly after birth. Although robotic gait training can improve overall gait patterns in CP, interventions targeting the 'foot rockers' motion, essential for stable weight transfer and effective push-off, have received limited attention. In this study, five adults with CP were recruited to train on a robotic treadmill system in which controlled downward forces were applied to the pelvis during walking, promoting implicit motor learni

Lumbar stabilization exercise with and without real-time ultrasound imaging biofeedback in chronic low back pain patients: a randomized controlled trial.

Reduced lumbar multifidus (LM) cross-sectional area (CSA) has been linked with non-specific chronic low back pain (NCLBP); hence, lumbar stabilization exercise (LSE) is typically used as treatment. Real-time ultrasound imaging (RUSI) biofeedback can enhance performance and retention in LM activation. This study aimed to compare the effects of LSE with or without RUSI-biofeedback in patients with NCLBP. A single-blind, three-arm, parallel randomized controlled trial involving 90 participants, randomized into LSERUSI-biofeedback, LSEno-biofeedback, or minimal intervention (n = 30 per group) was
