TCS [5-chloro-2-(2,4-dichlorophenoxy)phenol] caused a concentration dependent delay in embryonic development, delay and decline in hatching and reduction in length and weight of hatchlings along with an increase in abnormal/deformed embryos and larvae and percent mortality. These parameters varied in a species specific manner and increased with TCS residue in body. The 96 h LC50 values of TCS for Cyprinus carpio, Ctenopharyngodon idella, Labeo rohita and Cirrhinus mrigala were estimated at 0.315, 0.116, 0.096 and 0.131 mg/L, respectively. In the present study, the larvicidal activity of ageing aqueous suspensions of spinosad against larvae of Culex pipiens biotype molestus, as well as their effect on the oviposition preferences of adult gravid females were evaluated in laboratory bioassays. Viroporins are a family of small hydrophobic proteins found in many enveloped viruses that are capable of ion transport. We have developed a novel bioassay method for the detection of snake venom based on the permeability of endothelial cell monolayers cultured in Transwell cell culture inserts. This assay relies on the proteolytic degradation of capillary basement membrane proteins, a pathophysiological event that occurs due to snakebites in vivo. Transwell permeability assays with fluorescence measurements are advantageous with regard to ethical considerations for the use of animals. The assay time was reduced from 24 h for animal tests to 2 h, and many samples could be assayed easily.

The effects of sediment contamination on fish are of high significance for the protection of ecosystems, human health and economy. However, standardized sediment bioassays with benthic fish species, that mimic bioavailability of potentially toxic compounds and comply with the requirements of alternative test methods, are still scarce. An epidemiological study on ciguatera fish poisoning in the French West Indies on St-Barthelemy, St-Martin and Anguilla was conducted in the years 1985-1986-1987 and 1991-1992. A study on the toxicity of coral fish was realized. Recent work has shown that Trichomonas vaginalis produces a cell-detaching factor (CDF) that causes detachment of monolayer cells in vitro. To study the role of CDF as a pathogenic marker of disease, we studied the production of CDF in 12 clinical isolates of T. vaginalis.
