[Comparative analysis and clinical experience with osteoplastic materials materials based on non-demineralized bone collagen and artificial hydroxylapatite at the close of bone defects in ambulatory surgical dentistry].

BACKGROUND: In the presence of bone defects during surgery is not always performed osteoptastic material replenishment defect that leads to a lengthening of the timing healing, bone regeneration, and treatment outcome. Application of osteoplastic materials allows for faster treatment outcomes, accelerate the regeneration of bone tissue in the area of the defect. AIM: To examine the effectiveness of materials based on non-demineralized bone collagen and artificial hydroxylapatite when filling bone defects in outpatient surgical practice dentistry. PATIENTS AND METHODS: 22 patients with bone d

Two Cases of Radial Ray Deficiency With Absence of First Metacarpus and 2 Tiny Fingers.

We report 2 cases showing both radial ray deficiency and thumb duplication. The common features of these cases were absence of the first metacarpus and presence of 2 tiny fingers. The features of our cases may have been due to continuous abnormality of the mesenchymal cells before limb bud formation and apical ectodermal ridge at the established limb bud. In 1 case, we created a 5-finger hand using 2 tiny floating fingers. Two fingers as vascularized bones with growth potential were useful to make 1 thumb. Two tendon transfers at 2 years of age were effective to allow gripping and pinching of

Study of the relationship between overjet development and some skull bone measurements in Warmblood foals.

Overjet is defined as the projection of the maxillary incisors labial to their antagonists in a horizontal direction. This malocclusion in horses can lead to incorrect dental wear and is aesthetically undesirable. Whether lengthening of the maxilla or shortening of the mandible causes the condition has not yet been determined. Therefore, a measurement technique was developed to investigate the correlations between skull bone measurements in overjet-affected individuals. The position of the incisors in 650 Warmblood foals born in a private German stud was examined at two weeks of age, revealing

The 'Te' Technique for Restoring Fingertip Stability Post Traumatic Acro-Osteolysis - A Report and Review of Management Options.

BACKGROUND: Fractures of the distal phalanx can result in bony non-union, resulting in acro-osteolysis and subsequent fingertip instability due to soft tissue dissociation from bone. Conventional methods of treating this involve osseous fixation, but do not address the laxity and lack of soft tissue stability with bone. Current techniques also do not address the management of such conditions if bony fragments are too small to reduce. We present a novel method that addresses both soft tissue and bony deformity in this condition. METHODS: A review of current techniques in the literature is prov

Short Nose Correction: Septal Cartilage Combined With Ethmoid Bone Graft.

BACKGROUND: Multiple methods are employed to correct short nose deformities, with septal extension graft representing the first choice for Asians. However, the volume of the septal cartilage in many Asian patients is not sufficient to be used alone for such operation. The present work developed a new method combining the septal cartilage with ethmoid bone graft to overcome this issue in Asian patients with short noses. METHODS: Thirty-five women with short noses underwent septal extension graft from February 2015 to March 2017. The endoscopic technique was utilized to harvest the ethmoid bone

The role of bone allografts in the treatment of angular malunions of the distal radius.

PURPOSE: Two cohorts of patients who had corrective osteotomies and volar platings for malunited fractures of the distal radius were compared retrospectively to determine whether the time to union and the outcome were affected by bone allograft. METHODS: Patients in the first group (n = 14) did not receive any bone graft; patients in the second group (n = 14) had allograft bone chips following volar plating. Indications for surgery, surgical technique, and postoperative rehabilitation were the same in both groups. Volar cortical contact was maintained using a volar locking plate in all patien

Radiological Biometric Study of Metatarsals and Phalanges.

INTRODUCTION: Several diseases affect the forefoot bones. Relative dimensions of the forefoot bones are important considerations for preoperative and postoperative assessment of surgeries. The choice of a particular surgery over another can also be made if the surgeon knows the length to which a bone needs to be lengthened or shortened in comparison to other bones of the forefoot. AIM: To measure the dimensions of the metatarsals and phalanges on standardized radiographs and to determine possible correlations amongst them. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional prospective study was conduc

Rehabilitation in Franceschetti syndrome: an interdisciplinary approach using bone-anchored hearing aids.

The purpose of the study was to determine the effectiveness of a concept of combined interdisciplinary rehabilitation for children with mandibulofacial dysostosis, developed at the Center for Facial Malformations. It consists of binaural implantation of bone-anchored hearing aids and gradual distraction of the mandible. After audiological testing and mandibular distraction on a phantom head designed with data from a spiral CT, the surgery was done in three steps: implanting the fixtures for BAHA and the bone-lengthening device, removing the device after six weeks and completing the BAHA implan

Effect of distraction length on the morphology of knee cartilage in a rat model of femoral distraction osteogenesis.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the dose-dependent impact of femoral distraction length on knee joint integrity and characterized the molecular mechanisms driving cartilage degeneration in a rat distraction osteogenesis (DO) model. METHODS: Thirty-six Sprague-Dawley rats underwent femoral DO and were randomly assigned to three groups: Control (5 mm), Group A (10 mm), and Group B (20 mm). Following a consolidation phase, knee joint morphology and subchondral bone microstructure were evaluated using digital radiography and micro-computed tomography. Histological assessment included H&E, Safr

Reconstruction of the palatal aponeurosis with autogenous fascia lata in secondary radical intravelar veloplasty: a new method.

Velopharyngeal insufficiency in cleft patients with muscular insufficiency detected by nasendoscopy is commonly treated by secondary radical intravelar veloplasty, in which the palatal muscles are reoriented and positioned backwards. The dead space between the retro-displaced musculature and the posterior borders of the palatal bone remains problematic. Postoperatively, the surgically achieved lengthening of the soft palate often diminishes due to scar tissue formation in the dead space, leading to reattachment of the reoriented muscles to the palatal bone and to decreased mobility of the soft

What Are the Complications of Allograft Reconstructions for Sarcoma Resection in Children Younger Than 10 Years at Long-term Followup?

BACKGROUND: Preservation of limb function after resection of malignant bone tumors in skeletally immature children is challenging. Resection of bone sarcomas and reconstruction with an allograft in patients younger than 10 years old is one reconstructive alternative. However, long-term studies analyzing late complications and limb length discrepancy at skeletal maturity are scarce; this information would be important, because growth potential is altered in these patients owing to the loss of one physis during tumor resection. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: At a minimum followup of 10 years after reconst

The impact and surgeon perceptions of the suspension of the CE certification of MAGEC devices on clinical practice.

MAGnetic Expansion Control (MAGEC) rods are used in the surgical treatment of children with early onset scoliosis. The magnetically controlled lengthening mechanism enables rod distractions without the need for repeated invasive surgery. The CE certification of these devices was suspended in March 2021 due, primarily, to performance evidence gaps in the documents provided by the manufacturer to regulators and notified bodies. MAGEC rods are therefore not permitted for use in countries requiring CE marking. This was a survey of 18 MAGEC rod surgeons in the UK about their perception of the impac

[External fixation at the wrist and hand].

Distraction radio-metacarpal external fixation is an excellent technique for the osteosynthesis of distal radius fractures, in particular of comminuted articular fractures. The alternative is the locked palmar plate, a more demanding technique. The published literature does not allow concluding if one method is better than the other. The other main possible indications of external fixation at the wrist are comminuted fractures of the base of the thumb metacarpal, distal radius osteotomies, and wrist arthrodeses. At the hand, external minifixation is an excellent technique of osteosynthesis. St

Ilizarov lengthening in centralized fibula.

Tibial hemimelia often produces major limb length problems (1,6,9,15) as well as foot deformity. The decision to perform reconstructive surgery depends on the expected leg-length discrepancy, the anomalies of the foot, and the status of the knee (4,6,8,15). Congenital bone deficiencies usually have a constant rate of growth inhibition (8), and leg lengthening is often associated with more complications (5,13). The complication rate is also increased with the increased leg-length discrepancy (5). In tibial hemimelia with functioning quadriceps (types I and II) and a functional foot, centralizat

Metacarpophalangeal pattern (MCPP) profile analysis in a family with triphalangeal thumb.

Triphalangeal thumb (TPT) is a rare congenital disorder characterised by a long, finger-like thumb with three phalanges instead of two. It can occur as an isolated defect, in association with other abnormalities of the hands and feet, or as a part of a syndrome. Sporadic cases have been described, but it is usually inherited as an autosomal dominant trait. In order to examine skeletal morphology in different phenotypic variations of this disorder, we performed metacarpophalangeal pattern profile analysis in one kindred with this disorder. A characteristic profile occurred in all affected peopl

[Treatment of extra-articular malunited fractures of the distal radius using osteotomy with interposition of a graft].

Malunited fractures of the distal end of the radius are corrected by an osteotomy transversely oriented at the level of the angulation (15 cases reported). After correction of the deformation (length and angulation) compact iliac bone graft is inserted. 5 malunited fractures with a volar deformation were corrected by a palmar surgical approach and AO-T-plate fixation. 8 cases with a dorsal displacement were corrected by a dorso-lateral surgical approach and fixed with K-wires (7 cases) and without any internal fixation (1 case). 2 cases with dorsal displacement were corrected by a palmar appro

Considerations about the cloverleaf skull.

The study of four cloverleaf skulls (two fetuses, one infant, and a young adult) concerns two Pfeiffer syndromes, a thanatophoric dysplasia and an isolated case. Clinical and radiologic examinations showed malformations at the level of the calvarium, the base, orbital cavities, and, sometimes, limb abnormalities. Correlations between these findings and the microradiographic analysis of nondemineralized sections elucidate this trilobular appearance of the skull. Premature temporoparietal suture closure terminates at a constricted surface of the lateral sides of the skull during the fetal life.

Treatment of angular deformities of the tibia in children: acute versus gradual correction.

This is a retrospective review of 25 tibial osteotomies (in 19 patients) performed with either acute or gradual correction to determine the outcome of treatment and incidence of neurovascular complications. Patients undergoing gradual correction had fewer neurovascular complications and greater correction than those undergoing acute correction (27 degrees vs. 18 degrees, respectively). It was concluded that gradual correction tends to be a safer technique for the treatment of tibial deformities and allows greater correction.

Ilizarov treatment for pseudarthrosis of the tibia due to haematogenous osteomyelitis.

Haematogenous osteomyelitis is associated with poverty and overcrowding. The infection may extend through the entire length of a long bone and as a part of debridement, the sequestrum may be removed, resulting in a defect. Infection of tibial growth plates would result in altered growth rates of the tibia and fibula and produce deformities and shortening. Fourteen children were treated for pseudarthrosis of the tibia because of haematogenous osteomyelitis. Their ages ranged from 4 to 13 years. There were nine male and five female children. The treatment included the use of Ilizarov techniques
