Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a common autoimmune disease affecting around 1% of the population. Although major advances have been made in the treatment of RA, still relatively little is known on disease pathogenesis and aetiology. From treatment studies it has become clear that treating patients early in their disease course will provide the best results. Long-term residue of difenoconazole (DFZ) in the environment caused multiple organ damage to aquatic organisms. Due to the potential hepatoprotective and neuroprotective properties of silybin (SIL), we hypothesized that SIL could alleviate growth inhibition, liver, and brain damage in carp induced by DFZ exposure. Five children, three males and two females were found to have a short arm deletion of chromosome 18. Four of them display some of the typical features of this syndrome: microcephaly, round face, hypertelorism, broad-based nose, "carp-mouth", microrethrognathia, pterygium colli, dysplastic and low set ears, clinodactily, failure to grow, muscular hypotony and mental retardation. Different hypotheses are discussed in order to explain the variable phenotypical expression of the 18 p-syndrome.

A boy with trisomy of the short arm of chromosome 7 is reported. He presented several congenital malformations, such as: dolicocephaly; wide fontanelle; hypertelorism; antimongoloid slanting of the palpebral fissures; small, carp-shaped mouth; thin neck; extrinsic compression of the oesophagus; congenital dislocation of the shoulders and hips; and a possible cardiac defect. The proband's mother had a balanced translocation involving the short arm of chromosomes 7 and 14. In this family the translocation has been transmitted through three generations.

A 6p+ chromosome was observed in a dysmorphic and mentally retarded child. The mother was found to be carrier of an insertion: ins(6;2) (p22;q24;q34). The patient was therefore trisomic for 2q24 leads to 2q34. The same insertion was found in his brother in the balanced state. A comparison of this observation and four other cases from the literature allows a description of the symptoms characteristic of trisomy 2q24 leads to 2q34 : mid-face hypoplasia, carp-shaped mouth, neurological disorders, severe mental retardation.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the molluscicidal effect of a novel nano-silver biological molluscicide in the field and its toxicity to other aquatic organisms.
METHODS: A marshland of the Qiupu River was selected as the study site. Four 1 m3 pools were excavated. Four groups, including 300 g/m3 and 600 g/m3 nano-silver biological molluscicide groups, a 2 g/m3 50% niclosamide group, and a natural water (control) group were assigned to the four pools which had 100 Oncomelania hupensis snails and 100 crucian seedlings. The molluscicidal effects and toxicity to the aquatic organisms were observed.

ATR-X syndrome is an X-linked mental retardation syndrome characterized by mental retardation, alpha thalassaemia and distinct facial features which include microcephaly, frontal hair upsweep, epicanthic folds, small triangular nose, midface hypoplasia and carp-shaped mouth. Here we report two brothers with clinical features of ATR-X syndrome, in whom a novel missense (C>T) mutation was identified in exon 31 of the ATRX gene.

The paper gives data on an opisthorchiasis focus in the Taishetsky district, Irkutsk Region. The species affiliation of Bithynia from the Biryusa River basin was established. These mollusks are morphologically close to Opisthorchophorus hispanica (= Bithynia inflata). No O. felineus trematodes were found in the snails examined.
