Radiopaque cement containing barium sulfate causes significantly more bone resorption in vivo and in vitro than radiolucent cement. The aim of this study was to investigate the osteolytic potential of an alternative radiopaque agent, triphenyl bismuth (TPB). Bone cement particles containing various concentration of TPB (15 and 25 wt %) prepared by two methods, blending and dissolution, were added to monocytes in a bone resorption assay and the extent of lacunar resorption on dentine slices was determined. Polymethyl methacrylate extrusion through a small tibial defect occurred during revision of a long-stemmed total knee arthroplasty. It caused necrosis and ulceration of the overlying skin. Resection of the protruding cement, debridement of the ulcer, and primary closure effected a cure. This is the first report of cement-induced skin necrosis and first report of tibial cement extrusion during revision of a total knee arthroplasty. Subcutaneous cement extrusion should be considered in the differential diagnosis of pretibial ulcers following total knee arthroplasty with cemented stems.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the effects of hydroxyapatite cement (HAC) on the developing feline craniofacial skeleton.
DESIGN: Fronto-orbital craniotomies were performed on 14 kittens and reconstructed by autograft or HAC. By design, animals in which the craniofacial skeleton was reconstructed with HAC also underwent obliteration of the left frontal sinus. After achievement of skeletal maturity, animals were sacrificed and compared by 11 standardized cranial measurements obtained by sliding caliper. Additional analyses included histological studies, histomorphometry, and computed tomography.
