We reviewed in retrospect the records of all patients at our institution in whom peritoneovenous shunts were placed to manage refractory ascites due to chronic liver disease from 1977 through 1986. There was a wide spectrum of underlying liver disease in these 23 patients; most frequent was alcoholic cirrhosis. Five were in modified Child's class A, 14 were in class B, and four were in class C. Fourteen of 23 patients had some complication associated with peritoneovenous shunt placement; clinical consumptive coagulopathy, infection, and gastrointestinal hemorrhage while hospitalized were most

INTRODUCTION: Radiographers are well placed to flag non accidental injury in children due to their unique position within the imaging chain. Being able to identify (or suspect) physical abuse in children and reporting the incident are, however, two different issues. This study was conducted to explore the external influences in the decision making of the Ghanaian radiographer to report suspected child physical abuse (CPA).
METHOD: This was a qualitative study which applied interpretive phenomenology. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 20 radiographers who were selected from variou

Little is known about how emotion dysregulation (ED) and trauma exposure differentially affect the relationship between abuse in childhood and adult substance use. We examined associations between child abuse, trauma exposure, ED, and current substance use in an already existing dataset. Participants (N = 2,014 adults, 90% African American) had been recruited from an urban hospital for a parent study. Analyses showed that drug and alcohol use was significantly positively correlated with child abuse (emotional, physical, and sexual), later trauma exposure, and ED (all ps < .001). Linear regress

BACKGROUND: The Expanded Programme of Immunisation schedule starts at birth, yet a significant number of child births in Uganda occur at home, where there are no vaccines. A child born at home may therefore have less chances of being vaccinated than a child born in a health unit.
OBJECTIVES: To investigate vaccination status of the under-fives and to establish whether vaccination status of children born in health units is better than those born at home.
DESIGN: Cross-sectional descriptive.

Physicians play a crucial role in identifying and managing this phenomenon in the healthcare setting, as the number of unreported cases increases globally.
METHODS: A questionnaire-based cross-sectional study was conducted between 2022 and 2023 among physicians practicing in Saudi Arabia to assess their knowledge, awareness, and attitude toward child abuse. The data were
