Catatonia in children and adolescents: New perspectives.

INTRODUCTION: Catatonia is a rare and severe psychomotor condition in children and adolescents. In the current report, we aimed to review the recent literature. METHOD: Using a PRISMA approach, we searched MEDLINE between 1982 and 2017 using the keywords 'CATATONIA' and 'CHILD' or 'ADOLESCENT'. In total, we reviewed 130 reports (controlled study, N=4; clinical chart, N=23; case report, N=54; and editorial/review, N=42). RESULTS: Several aspects seem to be age specific: (1) although the clinical presentation resembles that in adults, some symptoms are important in children and adolescents (e.

[Pylephlebitis in pediatric patients].

Pylephlebitis is defined as thrombophlebitis of the portal vein or its tributaries. It is a rare disease commonly associated with acute appendicitis and it has a high rate of morbidity and mortality. Doppler ultrasound and computed tomography scan are the methods of choice to confirm diagnosis. The most frequent long-term complication in these patients is portal vein cavernoma, with subsequent portal hypertension. An early diagnosis, timely antibiotic therapy and removal of infection are essential therapeutic measures to diminish mortality. The need for anticoagulation therapy in children rema

Surgery in patients with advanced liver cirrhosis: a Pandora's box.

Advanced liver cirrhosis is a relative contraindication for abdominal surgery, as such patients are likely to develop postoperative complications and mortalities. We describe two patients with liver cirrhosis who developed postoperative decompensation and expired after undergoing non-abdominal surgery. We highlight that even non-abdominal surgery could incur high mortality in patients with Child's class B or C liver cirrhosis. Surgery should be avoided in such patients unless it is absolutely necessary. If the procedure is essential and life-saving, the patient should be co-managed by a team o

Survival of patients with cirrhosis and acute peptic ulcer bleeding compared with variceal bleeding using current first-line therapies.

UNLABELLED: The presence of cirrhosis increases the mortality of patients with peptic ulcer bleeding (PUB). Both acute variceal bleeding (AVB) and PUB are associated with substantial mortality in cirrhosis. This multicenter cohort study was performed to assess whether the mortality of patients with cirrhosis with PUB is different from that of those with AVB. Patients with cirrhosis and acute gastrointestinal bleeding were consecutively included and treated with somatostatin and proton pump inhibitor infusion from admission and with antibiotic prophylaxis. Emergency endoscopy with endoscopic th

[Dehydration and malnutrition as two independent risk factors of death in a Senegalese pediatric hospital].

UNLABELLED: Inpatient mortality is an indicator of the quality of care. We analyzed the mortality of under 5-year-old hospitalized children in the pediatric ward of Aristide Le Dantec Hospital for updating our data 10 years after our first study. METHODS: We analyzed the data of the children hospitalized between 1 January and 31 December 2012. For each child, we collected anthropometric measurements converted to a z-score related to World Health Organization growth data. Logistic regression-generating models built separately with different anthropometric parameters were used to assess the ris

Global distribution and disease burden related to micronutrient deficiencies.

Micronutrients are vitamins and minerals that are essential for human life and health. Deficiencies in these micronutrients are common because of poor quality diets and frequent infectious diseases in low- and middle-income countries. The high prevalence of deficiencies and their important adverse consequences on mortality, morbidity and disability result in a substantial disease burden. In particular, deficiencies of vitamin A and zinc increase the risk of child mortality, and zinc deficiency increases infectious morbidity and reduces linear growth as well. Deficiencies of iodine and iron are…

Estimating excess mortality due to female genital mutilation.

Globally, over 200 million women and girls have been subjected to Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). This practice, illegal in most countries, often happens in unsanitary conditions and without clinical supervision with consequent bleeding and infection. However, little is known about its contribution to the global epidemiology of child mortality. We matched data on the proportion of girls of a given age group subject to FGM to age-gender-year specific mortality rates during 1990-2020 in 15 countries where FGM is practised. We used fixed-effects regressions to separate the effect of FGM on morta…

Revaccination with Live Attenuated Vaccines Confer Additional Beneficial Nonspecific Effects on Overall Survival: A Review.

BACKGROUND: Live vaccines against measles (MV), tuberculosis (BCG), polio (OPV) and smallpox reduce mortality more than explained by target- … ed mortality by 59% (25-81%). BCG-revaccination significantly enhanced BCG's effect against overall child mortality in two RCTs. In a natural experiment study of OPV campaigns over a 13-year-period in Guinea-Bissau, each additional dose of OPV was associated with a 13% (4-21%) reduction in mortality rate. The beneficial NSEs of smallpox vaccination for survival i …

The declaration of nutrition, health, and intelligence for the child-to-be.

The Declaration of Nutrition, Health, and Intelligence for the Child-to-be is an urgent cry from the unborn child for a life-span of nutrients for physical and mental wellness. It is a proclamation of paramount importance for everyone involved in child development: parents, health professionals, teachers, government agencies, all producers of food--and children, so they may learn how to feed themselves well. The Declaration of Olympia on Nutrition and Fitness, 1996, came from a group pf nutritional scientists and medical doctors to commemorate the Olympic Games' 100th anniversary. They based i

Observational study of adherence to effective helmet use among parents and students who are dropped by two-wheeler to school.

OBJECTIVES: Road traffic injuries (RTIs) are a major cause of morbidity and mortality among children and adolescents in India. Despite legislative mandates requiring helmet use for all motorized two-wheeler riders aged 4 years and older, adherence remains poor, particularly among children. This study aimed to assess the prevalence and patterns of helmet use among parents and children commuting to school on motorized two-wheelers through direct observation. METHODS: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted in October 2024 at 4 schools located on roads of differing traffic densities

A prospective study of children aged <16 years in motor vehicle collisions in Norway: severe injuries are observed predominantly in older children and are associated with restraint misuse.

OBJECTIVE: The implementation of the compulsory wearing of seat belts (SBs) for children and improvements in child restraint systems have reduced the number of deaths and severe injuries among children involved in motor vehicle (MV) collisions (MVCs). Establishing the characteristics predictive of such injuries may provide the basis for targeted safety campaigns and lead to a further reduction in mortality and morbidity among children involved in MVCs. This study performed a multidisciplinary investigation among child occupants involved in MVCs to elucidate injury mechanisms, evaluate the safe
