Torpedo Maculopathy Associated with Choroidal Neovascularization.

Background Torpedo maculopathy is a very rare, congenital, usually unilateral hypopigmented lesion in the temporal macula. Material and Methods This retrospective case series describes three patients with torpedo maculopathy. Results The first two cases demonstrate typical clinical and imaging findings of torpedo maculopathy in asymptomatic patients. The third case relates to a symptomatic young patient with a torpedo lesion, a smaller satellite lesion, and evidence of choroidal neovascularization confirmed by fluorescence angiography. In the area of the clinically visible torpedo lesion, spec…

Splenic tuberculosis and multifocal serpiginoid choroiditis.

Serpiginoid multifocal choroiditis is a distinct morphological identity with a reported causal association with Mycobacterium tuberculosis. We report a case of serpiginoid multifocal choroiditis in a 17-year-old boy who was suffering from isolated splenic tuberculosis. He was treated with systemic steroids along with anti-tubercular treatment with good visual recovery. This case was unique as no other organs except spleen and choroid showed tubercular involvement. We hereby emphasize association of extrapulmonary sites with multifocal serpiginoid choroiditis and propose a thorough investigatio…

Choroidal tuberculoma as a presenting sign of tuberculosis.

Choroidal tuberculoma is a rare ocular form of tuberculosis (TB) that raises both a diagnostic and a therapeutical challenge, especially when occurring without other manifestations of the disease. This study reports the case of a 27-year-old woman who had a unilateral drop of vision (20/100) with ocular pain. Her fundus examination revealed an elevated juxtapapillary choroidal mass measuring 892 µm in diameter, as calculated by optical coherence tomography (OCT), and associated with a serous retinal detachment involving the macula. The diagnosis of choroidal tuberculoma was established by posi…

Eplerenone in the Treatment of Polypoidal Choroidal Vasculopathy.

Overactivation of mineralocorticoid receptor pathways has been implicated in the pathophysiology of central serous chorioretinopathy (CSCR). Recently, mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists such as eplerenone have demonstrated success in treating subretinal fluid in CSCR. This case demonstrates a patient who was initially presumed to have subretinal fluid secondary to CSCR and was started on a trial of oral eplerenone. It quickly became evident that her subretinal fluid was secondary to a peripapillary polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy network, but she demonstrated a significant improvement wi…

Choroidal Involvement in Erdheim-Chester Disease.

Erdheim-Chester disease is a rare infiltrative disorder of non-Langerhans cell histiocytes, which affects multiple organs, including bone, heart, lungs, orbits, central nervous system (CNS), pituitary gland, and retroperitoneum. Bone affliction is almost universal in these patients and, to a lesser degree, the CNS, retroperitoneum, and other tissues. Eye involvement is typically retro-orbital or periorbital. This case report describes a 48-year-old patient who presented with reduced vision in the left eye and no other complaints. Fundus examination revealed a choroidal mass in the macula. The …

Choroidal ganglioneuroma in a patient with orbitopalpebral neurofibromatosis.

Ganglioneuroma is a rare, benign tumor originating from the sympathetic ganglion cells. Choroidal ganglioneuroma in association with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF-1) has been reported in a few cases. This study describes a 21-year-old woman with orbitopalpebral NF, who underwent evisceration for pseudophakic bullous keratopathy, intractable glaucoma, and absolute painful eyes and who was found to have choroidal ganglioneuroma and retrobulbar plexiform neurofibroma on histologic examination. This case, together with the previously described cases, suggests that eyes with choroidal ganglioneuroma…

Retinal detachment in the eye with the choroidal coloboma.

INTRODUCTION: Choroidal coloboma is a congenital defect caused by an inadequate closure of embryonic fissure. About 40% of the eyes with the choroidal coloboma (CHC) develop the retinal detachment (RD). It is extremely difficult to manage these cases due to the lack of pigmentation at the site of choroidal coloboma. OUTLINE OF CASES: This is a case series of five patients with CHC and RD who were successfully operated using one of two different surgical techniques: pars plana vitrectomy (PPV)+silicone oil internal tamponade and/or scleral buckle with encircling band with laser photocoagulatio…

Retinal and choroidal thickness in myopic anisometropia.

PURPOSE: We compared the retinal thickness (RT) and choroidal thickness (ChT) between the fellow eyes of nonamblyopic myopic anisometropes. METHODS: The eyes of 22 nonamblyopic myopic anisometropes (≥ 1 diopter [D] spherical equivalent refraction [SER] anisometropia) were examined using spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT). Customized software was used to register, align, and average multiple foveal OCT B-scan images from each subject to enhance image quality. Two independent masked observers manually determined the RT and ChT from each SD-OCT image up to 2.5 mm nasal and tem…
