Projecting temperature-related dengue burden in the Philippines under various socioeconomic pathway scenarios.

INTRODUCTION: As climate change advances, the looming threat of dengue fever, intricately tied to rising temperatures, intensifies, posing a substantial and enduring public health challenge in the Philippines. This study aims to investigate the historical and projected excess dengue disease burden attributable to temperature to help inform climate change policies, and guide resource allocation for strategic climate change and dengue disease interventions. METHODS: The study utilized established temperature-dengue risk functions to estimate the historical dengue burden attributable to increase

The impact of climatic factors on tick-related hospital visits and borreliosis incidence rates in European Russia.

Tick-borne diseases are among the challenges associated with warming climate. Many studies predict, and already note, expansion of ticks' habitats to the north, bringing previously non-endemic diseases, such as borreliosis and encephalitis, to the new areas. In addition, higher temperatures accelerate phases of ticks' development in areas where ticks have established populations. Earlier works have shown that meteorological parameters, such as temperature and humidity influence ticks' survival and define their areas of habitat. Here, we study the link between climatic parameters and tick-relat

Climate change and threat of vector-borne diseases in India: are we prepared?

It is unequivocal that climate change is happening and is likely to expand the geographical distribution of several vector-borne diseases, including malaria and dengue etc. to higher altitudes and latitudes. India is endemic for six major vector-borne diseases (VBD) namely malaria, dengue, chikungunya, filariasis, Japanese encephalitis and visceral leishmaniasis. Over the years, there has been reduction in the incidence of almost all the diseases except chikungunya which has re-emerged since 2005. The upcoming issue of climate change has surfaced as a new threat and challenge for ongoing effor

Comparison of the predicted impact of a screwworm fly outbreak in Australia using a growth index model and a life-cycle model.

The spatial population dynamics of an Old World screwworm fly, Chrysomya bezziana Villeneuve (OWS), outbreak in Australia have been modelled in two ways. The first model uses weekly growth indices derived from climatic data to predict the adult female population. The second is a detailed cohort life-cycle model. Due to technical and time constraints, the growth index model is preferred as the biological component of a much larger bioeconomic model because of its smaller program size and faster execution. In deciding whether adoption of the growth index model would be at the expense of scientif

Climate-Driven Changes in Potential Suitability and Spatial Co-Occurrence Across the Pine Wilt Disease Complex.

Climate change may redistribute forest pests, pathogens, natural enemies, and host trees, yet these components are still often projected independently. We used ensemble species distribution models (SDMs) to map potential climatic suitability for Monochamus alternatus, Dastarcus helophoroides, Scleroderma guani, Bursaphelenchus xylophilus, and a genus-level Pinus host layer, and then summarized niche overlap, range overlap, and multispecies co-suitability under SSP1-2.6, SSP3-7.0, and SSP5-8.5 for the 2050s and 2090s. A structural equation model (SEM) fitted to thresholded binary layers was ret

Past, present and future distribution of the yellow fever mosquito Aedes aegypti: The European paradox.

The global distribution of the yellow fever mosquito Aedes aegypti is the subject of considerable attention because of its pivotal role as a biological vector of several high profile disease pathogens including dengue, chikungunya, yellow fever, and Zika viruses. There is also a lot of interest in the projected future species' distribution. However, less effort has been focused on its historical distribution, which has changed substantially over the past 100 years, especially in southern Europe where it was once widespread, but largely disappeared by the middle of the 20th century. The present

[Mental health and mental health literacy among novice teachers working in public elementary and junior high schools in a Japanese regional city: A cross-sectional study].

OBJECTIVES: Mental health problems among schoolteachers are an increasing concern in Japan, with rising sickness absence and early turnover among younger teachers. We aimed to estimate the prevalence of key mental health indicators (psychological distress, insomnia, and burnout); characterize mental health literacy (depression stigma and recognition, help-seeking attitudes, and knowledge about mental illness) and perceived workplace climate; and examine factors associated with these indicators among novice teachers in public elementary and junior high schools in City A, Japan. METHODS: An ano

Distribution pattern shift and identification of priority conservation areas for three Cyatheaceae species in China under climate change.

Climate change is profoundly reshaping the distribution patterns of rare and endangered plants and threatening their persistence. We investigated the impact of climate change on rare and endangered Cyatheaceae plants, including Alsophila spinulosa, A. costularis, and Sphaeropteris brunoniana. We used an optimized MaxEnt model to predict their potential suitable habitat patterns and shifts under the baseline period and future periods (2050 and 2090) across three climate scenarios (SSP126, SSP245, SSP585), and identified priority conservation areas through suitable habitat overlap analysis and l

Managing creativity and compliance in the pursuit of patient safety.

BACKGROUND: Are creativity and compliance mutually exclusive? In clinical settings, this question is increasingly relevant. Hospitals and clinics seek the creative input of their employees to help solve persistent patient safety issues, such as the prevention of bloodstream infections, while simultaneously striving for greater adherence to evidence-based guidelines and protocols. Extant research provides few answers about how creativity works in such contexts. METHODS: Cross-sectional survey data were collected from employees in 24 different U.S.-based outpatient hemodialysis clinics. Linear

Climate variations and Salmonella infection in Australian subtropical and tropical regions.

This study aims to quantify the relationship between climate variations and cases of Salmonella infection in subtropical and tropical areas in Australia. Brisbane in a subtropical area and Townsville in a tropical area of Queensland were selected as the study regions. Local meteorological variables and notified cases of Salmonella infection from January 1990 to July 2005 were provided by local authorities. Spearman correlation and time-series adjusted Poisson regression were applied controlling for autoregression, lag effects, seasonal variation and long-term trend. Natural cubic spline and Ho

Early warning system of the seasonal west nile virus infection risk in humans in northern greece, 2020-2024.

This study introduces a novel forecasting tool for West Nile Virus (WNV) risk at the municipal level, based on a previously developed climate-dependent epidemiological model coupled with a data-driven model and field data in an ensemble framework. The modelling system was evaluated at the municipal level in the regions of Central Macedonia (RCM) and Thessaly (RTH) in Greece for the period 2020-2024 and classifies the municipalities according to the risk level of occurrence of a WNV human case (WNVhc) within each forecast season. The modelling system produces seasonal forecasts updated monthly

The seasonal effect in one-dimensional Daisyworld.

We have studied the effects of seasonal Solar Radiation Forcing (SRF) on the climate self-regulatory capability of life, using a latitudinal-dependent Daisyworld model. Because the seasonal polarity of SRF increases poleward, habitable conditions exist in the equatorial regions year round, whereas, in the high latitudes, harsh winters cause annual extinction of life, and only the summers are inhabited or regulated by life. Seasonality affects climate regulation by two major mechanisms: (1) the cold winter conditions in the high latitudes reduce the global temperature below the optimal temperat

Higher levels of eco-distress in psychotherapy out-patients with depressive and anxious symptoms are predicted by emotion regulation strategies.

BACKGROUND: Psychotherapy patients are particularly vulnerable to the experience of eco-distress, often referred to as climate anxiety or eco-anxiety. Eco-distress can foster pro-environmental behavior, but its various symptoms might as well be functionally impairing and are negatively correlated with psychological well-being. The link between eco-distress and depressive and anxiety symptoms, as well as the use of dysfunctional emotion regulation strategies, may explain this vulnerability and suggest ways to promote resilience. METHODS: Psychotherapy out-patients were screened at T1 (n = 203)

Examining the Relationship between Climate Change and Vibriosis in the United States: Projected Health and Economic Impacts for the 21st Century.

BACKGROUND: This paper represents, to our knowledge, the first national-level (United States) estimate of the economic impacts of vibriosis cases as exacerbated by climate change. Vibriosis is an illness contracted through food- and waterborne exposures to various Vibrio species (e.g., nonV. cholerae O1 and O139 serotypes) found in estuarine and marine environments, including within aquatic life, such as shellfish and finfish. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to project climate-induced changes in vibriosis and associated economic impacts in the United States related to changes in s

Pluvial flood adaptation using nature-based solutions: An integrated biophysical-economic assessment.

Globally, flood events are considered the costliest natural hazard. Changes in precipitation patterns and large areas of impervious surfaces in urban environments are increasing the sensitivity of these systems to runoff production. At the same time, projected global sea-level rise may further increase the frequency of compound flooding due to simultaneous storm surge, sea-level rise and pluvial runoff that cause vast socio-economic and ecological impacts to coastal cities. In this context, over the last decade, the role of Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) has been recognised to support climate ch

Comparative phylogeography of three Cletus species pairs reveals shared responses to quaternary environmental change.

Understanding how co-distributed species respond to shared environmental histories is a central question in evolutionary biology. Although comparative phylogeography has advanced rapidly in vertebrates, insects-despite comprising most terrestrial biodiversity-remain underrepresented. Here, we conducted a comparative phylogeographic study of three closely related phytophagous insect species pairs in the genus Cletus (Heteroptera: Coreidae) distributed across eastern Asia. Using genome-wide SNPs generated by ddRAD-seq, we integrated coalescent-based demographic modeling, ecological niche modelin

Climate-driven flooding widens economic inequalities across EU regions.

With growing consensus on the scale of climate change and its direct impacts on societies and economies, the debate on how direct climate damages cascade through interconnected economic systems eventually leading to profound indirect effects remains open amid limited quantitative evidence. The localised nature of climate risk means that regional economies may face stark differences in how they are impacted by the direct and indirect physical risks. In Europe, the world's fastest warming continent, concentrated local damages spill over asymmetrically into tightly-interconnected regional markets

Climate-informed surveillance for climate-sensitive infectious diseases in Somalia: early warning systems, policy gaps, and preparedness priorities.

Climate variability is reshaping infectious disease risk through ecological, environmental, social, and health-system pathways. However, its operational implications remain insufficiently defined in fragile and conflict-affected settings. Somalia is a critical case because recurrent droughts and floods intersect with displacement, food insecurity, weak water and sanitation infrastructure, disrupted immunisation, livestock dependence, and constrained health-system capacity. This narrative review synthesises evidence on climate-sensitive infectious disease risks in Somalia, examines existing sur

Climate-driven collapse risk in Chilean Araucaria forests.

Coniferous forests are increasingly threatened by the synergistic effects of climate change and land-use transformation, yet temperate systems remain underrepresented in global ecosystem collapse-risk assessments. Here, we evaluate the collapse risk of Araucaria araucana ecosystems in Chile, an ancient and culturally significant conifer, using the IUCN Red List of Ecosystems framework. Our aim was to quantify historical, current, and future degradation across four distinct Araucaria ecosystems, integrating distributional and functional criteria. We combined national forest cadasters, ecologica

The effect of climate change on cholera disease: The road ahead using artificial neural network.

Climate change has been described to raise outbreaks of water-born infectious diseases and increases public health concerns. This study aimed at finding out these impacts on cholera infections by using Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) from 2021 to 2050. Daily data for cholera infection cases in Qom city, which is located in the center of Iran, were analyzed from 1998 to 2016. To determine the best lag time and combination of inputs, Gamma Test (GT) was applied. General circulation model outputs were utilized to project future climate pattern under two scenarios of Representative Concentration
