Is the Discrimination of Subjective Cognitive Decline from Cognitively Healthy Adulthood and Mild Cognitive Impairment Possible? A Pilot Study Utilizing the R4Alz Battery.

BACKGROUND: The early diagnosis of neurocognitive disorders before the symptoms' onset is the ultimate goal of the scientific community. REM … hibition and switching subtask (ICT/RST-S1&S2), the failure sets (FS) of the ICT/RST-S1&S2, and the cognitive flexibility subtask (ICT/RST-S3). The total score of the four R4Alz subtasks (R4AlzTot4) leads to an excellent discrimination among SCD and healthy adulthood, and to fare discrimination among SCD and MCI. CONCLUSION: The R4Alz battery is a novel approach regar …

A comparison of discrimination learning in touchscreen and 2-choice swim tank using an allelic series of Huntington's disease mice.

BACKGROUND: Progressive cognitive impairments are a major, debilitating symptom of neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Huntington's disease (HD). Developing treatments to slow or prevent cognitive decline is a key challenge for these fields. Unfortunately, preclinical therapeutic testing has not kept pace with molecular advances, and the methods for systematic cognitive testing in mice remain largely unchanged. Although higher throughput semi-automated systems exist, the lack of a 'positive control' (i.e. a drug or treatment that works) makes it challenging to test

Shared and unique neural correlates of reappraisal generation and implementation.

Cognitive reappraisal is an effective emotion regulation strategy that involves changing the meaning of an emotional event to alter one's emotional experience. Experimental studies have identified two dissociable subprocesses within reappraisal: the generation of candidate reappraisals (reappraisal generation) and the elaboration on a reappraisal to change emotion (reappraisal implementation). We examined the shared and unique neural correlates of these two reappraisal subprocesses. Participants (N = 45) completed the validated GenImp task while fMRI BOLD data was collected. In this task, part

Is there evidence for neural compensation in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder? A review of the functional neuroimaging literature.

This article reviews evidence for the presence of a compensatory, alternative, neural system and its possible link to associated processing strategies in children and adults with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The article presents findings on a region by region basis that suggests ADHD should be characterized not only by neural hypo-activity, as it is commonly thought but neural hyperactivity as well, in regions of the brain that may relate to compensatory brain and behavioral functioning. In this context studies from the functional neuroimaging literature are reviewed. We hy

Operant-based instrumental learning for analysis of genetically modified models of Huntington's disease.

Huntington's disease is the result of an expanded CAG repeat in the gene that codes for the protein huntingtin and results in a progressive sequelae of motor, cognitive and psychiatric symptoms. The development of genetically modified rodent models of Huntington's disease has led to the need for sensitive behavioural phenotyping. Operant tests for rodents have been developed that can determine the functional deficits in these genetically modified models, from motor, cognitive and emotional domains. The current review discusses tests that employ operant equipment, an automated and highly flexib

Dynamic functional abnormalities of cerebellar networks in adolescents with obsessive-compulsive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) commonly begins during adolescence, yet its neurobiological basis remains unclear. Beyond the classical cortico-striatal framework, the cerebellum has been implicated in cognitive, affective, and motor regulation, relevant to OCD. However, it is unknown whether adolescent OCD involves abnormal dynamic coordination of large-scale cerebellar networks. METHODS: Thirty-eight adolescents with OCD and 29 matched controls underwent dynamic functional network connectivity (dFNC) analysis of cerebellar networks using a sliding-window approach and k-means

Base Rates of Low Delis Kaplan Executive Function System Scores in Individuals With Anorexia Nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: Inefficiencies in cognitive flexibility (CF) are a potential vulnerability trait for anorexia nervosa (AN). Yet, much of the research on CF in AN has been conducted in adult samples, with mixed results from research on adolescents. Knowledge of the prevalence of low scores on assessments can help avoid erroneous interpretations of test scores. The current study examined the prevalence of low scores on the Delis Kaplan Executive Function System (D-KEFS) in adolescents and adults with AN and adolescent healthy controls. METHOD: We conducted a secondary analysis of D-KEFS data from 73…

Inter-individual differences in baseline dynamic functional connectivity are linked to cognitive aftereffects of tDCS.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has the potential to modulate cognitive training in healthy aging; however, results from various studies have been inconsistent. We hypothesized that inter-individual differences in baseline brain state may contribute to the varied results. We aimed to explore whether baseline resting-state dynamic functional connectivity (rs-dFC) and/or conventional resting-state static functional connectivity (rs-sFC) may be related to the magnitude of cognitive aftereffects of tDCS. To achieve this aim, we used data from our double-blind randomized sham-control
