A meta-analysis of the dynamism of emergent states and team processes.

Prevailing theories of teamwork propose that a team's cognitive, affective, and motivational states (i.e., emergent states) and its members' interdependent actions (i.e., team processes) are inherently dynamic. Nevertheless, much of the existing literature overlooks critical components of theories on system dynamics (e.g., inertia, coevolution, feedback) and has largely failed to consider how time operates, ultimately leading to a predominantly static view of teams. To extend our understanding of team dynamism, we synthesized over 3,000 correlation coefficients from longitudinal studies, repre

Predicting elementary scientific literacy from preschoolers' causal stance, causal reasoning skills, and home science environment.

This longitudinal study followed 153 children from ages 3 (Mage = 3.41, SDage = 0.26, 53% girls, 47% boys) to 7 years (Mage = 7.92, SDage = 0.28, 54% girls, 46% boys) representative of the diverse demographics (30% Hispanic/Latino, 13% Black/African American, 11% mixed race/other, 3% Asian) of Austin, Texas, to examine the relative degree to which preschoolers' causal stance, causal reasoning skills, and home science environment predict scientific literacy through early elementary school. Together, these three predictors explained up to one third of the variance in scientific literacy across t

Divergent disinhibition profiles linked to externalizing psychopathology.

Disinhibited individuals show heterogeneity in their neuropsychosocial characteristics. To better understand this variability, we used a person-centered approach to identify transdiagnostic profiles of disinhibition based on a range of personality and neurocognitive indicators. A community sample of adults (N = 363; ages 18-55; 50.1% female; data collected 2019-2024), enriched for externalizing disorders, completed a multilevel assessment encompassing clinical symptoms, personality traits, neuropsychological task performance, and trauma history. Latent profile analysis of disinhibition-related

School air pollution and executive functioning development among low-income kindergarteners.

The present study examines the associations between toxic industrial air pollution around elementary schools and children's executive functioning (EF) skill development among a racially and ethnically diverse sample of kindergarteners from low-income families in Tulsa, Oklahoma (N = 763; 50% female; 52% Hispanic/Latinx, 18% Black, 13% White, 10% multiracial, 6% American Indian, 1% Asian American/Pacific Islander). Data on ambient industrial pollution were derived from the Environmental Protection Agency's Toxic Release Inventory and geo-matched to children's schools. Children's EF was directly

Toward a better understanding of target distinctiveness in visual search: How color, shape, and texture information combine to guide search.

People often search for objects distinctive from other objects in the scene along multiple feature dimensions like color and shape. A target distinctive in more than one dimension can lead to an easier search, but it also increases the complexity of modeling search behaviors. Building upon previous research on how people search using information along two feature dimensions, we explored how search unfolds when the target and distractors differ along the dimensions of color, shape, and texture (a tridimensional search). Using a behavioral-computational approach, we found that the target-distrac

Investigating empathy in schizotypy.

Though empathy is a critical component of adaptive psychosocial functioning, the relationship between schizotypy, conceived of as the latent liability for schizophrenia, and empathy is unclear. Given the centrality of psychosocial functioning impairments in schizophrenia-related psychopathology, along with the critical role of empathy in the social processes aspect of the Research Domain Criteria Matrix, the relation between empathy and schizotypy should be illuminated. The lack of clarity regarding empathy is in part due to both differences in defining empathy and the relations empathy measur

Adolescents' pathological personality traits, mentalizing, and daily social interactions linking Criteria A and B from the DSM-5 alternative model for personality disorders.

Personality pathology often emerges in adolescence-a period marked by increasing autonomy and complex peer dynamics-but its moment-to-moment interpersonal expression remains poorly understood. This preregistered, multi-informant ambulatory assessment study tracked 294 adolescents (58.5% female; ages 12-21) across 13,190 real-world interactions over 14 days. Using the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fifth edition, alternative model for personality disorders, we examined how maladaptive traits (Criterion B) relate to interpersonal functioning (Criterion A), operationalized

Through their eyes: Understanding the immediate and cumulative impact of vicarious discrimination on adolescents' socioemotional and cognitive-affective reactions.

To understand adolescents' daily experiences and reactions to vicarious discrimination as well as the role of parent and friend support in these dynamics, this study used a 14-day daily diary research design to examine the daily experiences of vicarious discrimination on adolescents' emotional (i.e., depressed, anxious, angry, positive moods) and cognitive-affective reactions (i.e., perceived safety stress, trouble fitting in with peers). Participants (N = 145) included 10th- and 11th-grade students in the southern United States from a larger longitudinal study (13% Asian American, 9% bi/multi

Situational correlates of adolescents' alcohol outcome expectancies in daily life.

OBJECTIVE: Alcohol outcome expectancies (AOEs), formed in early childhood, are correlates of future alcohol consumption and related problems. Social-cognitive theories suggest that AOEs become activated in specific social and physical location contexts. Prior research, primarily among university students, has aimed to identify situational influences on specific AOEs, as indexed by reports of AOEs in hypothetical drinking scenarios. This study aims to deepen understanding of AOE activation in real-world settings by examining social and physical situational correlates of AOE activation among ado

Emotional auditory stimuli influence step initiation in Parkinson's disease with freezing of gait.

Freezing of gait (FOG) in Parkinson's disease (PD) can be triggered by sensomotor, cognitive or limbic factors. The limbic system's impact on FOG is attributed to elevated limbic load, characterized by aversive stimuli, potentially depleting cognitive resources for movement control, resulting in FOG episodes. However, to date, PD patients with and without FOG have not shown alterations of anticipatory postural adjustments during gait initiation after exposure to emotional images, possibly because visual stimuli are less immediately disruptive than auditory stimuli, which can more directly affe

Stable asynchrony? Association between borderline personality traits and interpersonal asynchrony.

Interpersonal coordination processes facilitate interpersonal synchrony through a continuous mutual adaption and corepresentation of self and others' actions. Such a process has been found to enhance prosocial behaviors, affiliation, and trust. While research has investigated the general underlying cognitive and social mechanisms that facilitate interpersonal synchrony, much less is known about how interpersonal impairments influence it in various psychopathological conditions-such as borderline personality disorder (BPD). In this study, we investigated the role of the social cognitive process

A theoretically based experimental manipulation of the processing of sudden gains: Considering reasons, meaning, and opportunities to leverage the gain.

OBJECTIVE: Sudden gains in psychotherapy have been found to predict outcome, but the conditions under which this occurs remain understudied. In the present study, we experimentally examined the effects of processing sudden gains on treatment outcome. METHOD: As part of a large randomized controlled trial of internet-delivered cognitive behavior therapy for social anxiety disorder (n = 182), we experimentally manipulated therapists' responses to sudden gains. Specifically, we randomized individuals who experienced a sudden gain (n = 52) to either receive (n = 26) or not receive (n = 26) proces

Individualized Assessment and Treatment Program (IATP) for alcohol use disorder: Comparison with conventional cognitive-behavioral treatment and examination of coping skills as a mediator of treatment.

OBJECTIVE: This study tested a highly individualized cognitive-behavioral coping skills treatment for alcohol use disorder (AUD). Recent studies have indicated that coping skills training programs are not always effective. A possible explanation is that the training provided in these programs may not address the specific needs of the patient. The Individualized Assessment and Treatment Program (IATP) was intended to provide a highly individualized approach to the training of skills most relevant for each individual. METHOD: Men and women with AUD (N = 173) were randomly assigned to one of thr

Anxiety about the social consequences of missed group experiences intensifies fear of missing out (FOMO).

Although fear of missing out (FOMO) has become a widely experienced phenomenon, the specific social situations and cognitions driving the FOMO experience have not yet been closely studied. Across seven experiments (N = 5,441), we find that FOMO occurs when people miss events involving valued social groups and is driven by the perception of missed bonding and concerns about how this may negatively affect their future relationships. People feel greater FOMO when they miss events involving valued others (vs. strangers or irrelevant social groups) and when events foster social bonding (vs. individ

Applications of isradipine in human addiction studies: A systematic literature review.

Given the personal and public health burden of addictive disorders, innovative approaches to treatment are sorely needed. This systematic review examined the use of the pharmacological agent isradipine in the context of potential applications for addiction treatment. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guided a comprehensive search of PubMed, Cochrane Library, and PsycINFO between the years 1985 to July 2022. Studies were included if isradipine was administered to adults with a current Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-5th edition

The racial pandemic experienced by Black American men: Cognitive-behavioral and structural implications.

Issues of systemic racism, mass incarceration, and cultural trauma (CT) are linked to emotional sequelae sufficient for treatment. However, attempts to explain the psychosocial reactions of Black American (BA) men to racial injustice and treat CT must be considered in the context of the current and past structural environments in which they live. The purpose of the present study was to obtain in-depth, thick description of two related factors: BA males' perceptions of injustice during the racial pandemic and the consequent psychosocial implications for theory and treatment. An interview guide

Impaired metacognition and reduced neural signals of decision confidence in adults with traumatic brain injury.

OBJECTIVE: Metacognition reflects our capacity to monitor or evaluate other cognitive states as they unfold during task performance, for example, our level of confidence in the veracity of a memory. Impaired metacognition is seen in patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI) and substantially impacts their ability to manage functional difficulties during recovery. Recent evidence suggests that metacognitive representations reflect domain-specific processes (e.g., memory vs. perception) acting jointly with generic confidence signals mediated by widespread frontoparietal networks. The impact of

Health effects of psychological interventions for worry and rumination: A meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Evidence suggests that perseverative cognition (PC), the cognitive representation of past stressful events (rumination) or feared future events (worry), mediates the relationship between stress and physical disease. However, the experimental evidence testing methods to influence PC and the subsequent relationship with health outcomes has not been synthesized. Therefore, the current review addressed these gaps. METHOD: Studies randomly assigning participants to treatment and control groups, measuring PC and a physical and/or behavioral health outcome after exposure to a nonpharmacol

The facilitating role of dispositional mindfulness in the process of posttraumatic growth: A prospective investigation.

OBJECTIVE: Traumatic events can lead not only to psychological distress but also to posttraumatic growth (PTG). As trauma challenge one's fundamental assumptions, traumatized individuals may initially experience intrusive rumination. However, these challenged assumptions could facilitate further cognitive processing of trauma (i.e., deliberate rumination), which in turn fosters PTG. Adaptive cognitive processes, such as reduced rumination, have been linked to dispositional mindfulness. Thus, the current study aimed to investigate the potential role of dispositional mindfulness in the process o
