The double challenge (preoperative diagnosis and surgical approach) of primary leiomyosarcoma of the sigmoid colon.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Primary colonic leiomyosarcoma (cLMS) is a rare malignancy of muscularis mucosae or muscularis propria showing highly aggressive behaviour and poor prognosis. To date, making a preoperative diagnosis and performing the most appropriate treatment represent laborious tasks for the clinicians. On the one hand, in fact, cLMS diagnosis is often difficult to achieve preoperatively because of the low specificity of clinical, radiological and bioptical features: for these motives, the diagnosis is usually obtained at postoperative histology/immune-histochemistry. On the other hand,

Pediatric sigmoid colonic perforation with Campylobacter enterocolitis: a case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Campylobacter-related infectious gastroenteritis is common and usually self-limited. Intestinal perforation is a rare complication of the infectious colitis caused by Campylobacter, and only handful of cases have been reported. This is the first published case report of pediatric Campylobacter intestinal perforation located in the sigmoid colon. CASE PRESENTATION: A 15-year-old previously Taiwanese healthy boy presented with 5 days of fever up to 39.8 °C, with right lower quadrant abdominal pain and watery diarrhea. Although he received antimotility agents and antipyretics at a lo

Perforated sigmoid colon in the setting of chicken bone ingestion and diverticulitis: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Diverticular perforation due to foreign body ingestion is an uncommon but important cause of gastrointestinal tract injury. The aim of this study is to discuss relevant findings seen in diverticulitis caused by foreign bodies and its treatment. CASE PRESENTATION: In this report, we present a case of a 30-year-old woman who presented to the emergency department with two days of severe abdominal pain and diarrhea. Computed tomography of the patient's abdomen and pelvis revealed micro-perforations of the sigmoid colon with pneumoperitoneum and an intraluminal foreign body. She subs

Synchronous volvulus of the transverse and sigmoid colon: a rare case of large bowel obstruction.

Colonic volvulus usually occurs as a single event that can affect various parts of the colon. The usual sites affected being the sigmoid colon (75%) and the caecum (22%). The phenomenon of multiple sites simultaneously undergoing volvulus is an extremely rare occurrence. We report a rare case of simultaneous sigmoid and transverse colon volvulus in a 52-year-old female. The clinical presentation and the radiological findings were that of large bowel obstruction. A subtotal colectomy and colocolic anastomosis were performed and the postoperative period was uneventful. Though rare the developmen

A rare case of a closed loop obstruction due to epiploic appendage of the sigmoid colon.

An internal hernia is a protrusion of viscera through a congenital or acquired defect in the mesentery of peritoneum. They account for <0.9% of all small bowel obstructions [1] and ~4% of obstructions due to hernias [2]. We present a rare case of closed loop obstruction secondary to a band adhesion traversing the lower abdomen from a sigmoid colon appendage epiploicae to the right pelvic wall. A 82-year-old woman presented to the emergency department with nausea, vomiting and worsening right sided abdominal pain for 24 h, on the background of previous pelvic radiation and hysterectomy for uter

A case of planar-type GIST of the sigmoid colon showing diverticular structure with perforation.

BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) generally form well-defined mass lesions. However, some cases of the flatly distributed and muscularis propria-replacing GISTs have been reported so far. We experienced an additional case of planar-type GIST of the sigmoid colon accompanied by a diverticulum with perforation. CASE PRESENTATION: A 68-year-old Japanese male with sudden onset of abdominal pain was clinically diagnosed with gastrointestinal perforation, and an emergency abdominal operation was performed. A diverticulum with rupture was found in the sigmoid colon, but no apparent

Spindle cell proliferations of the sigmoid colon, rectum and anus: a review with emphasis on perineurioma.

A wide range of spindle cell proliferations are found uncommonly in the sigmoid colon, rectum and anus. They usually present as polyps, and include reactive lesions and benign and malignant neoplasms which may be primary or metastatic. They are less frequently described in the literature compared to those in the upper gastrointestinal tract, and may be underdiagnosed. The widespread use of sigmoidoscopy in symptomatic patients and bowel cancer screening programmes means that histopathologists must be aware of, and adopt a logical approach to, diagnosing spindle cell proliferations in biopsy an

[A Case of Chemotherapy with FOLFOXIRI plus Cetuximab for Liver Metastasis of Sigmoid Colon Cancer].

We report a case of chemotherapy with FOLFOXIRI plus cetuximab for liver metastasis of sigmoid colon cancer. The patient was a 40's man who was diagnosed with sigmoid colon cancer with liver metastasis. Colonoscopy revealed a type 2 tumor with stenosis in the sigmoid colon. He underwent sigmoidectomy under laparotomy, and after the operation, received 7 courses of chemotherapy with FOLFOXIRI plus cetuximab. The liver tumor was sufficiently reduced, and laparotomy and liver right lobectomy were performed. Histopathology revealed a modified, Grade 2 tumor regression. He has been followed for 1 y

Secondary extramedullary plasmacytoma of sigmoid colon in a patient with multiple myeloma: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Extramedullary plasmacytoma is an uncommon tumor that most often involves the nasopharynx or upper respiratory tract. Extramedullary plasmacytoma is a type of plasma cell neoplasm that can present as a primary tumor or secondary to another plasma cell neoplasm, such as multiple myeloma. Secondary extramedullary plasmacytoma is usually noted in the advanced stages of the disease. Involvement of the gastrointestinal tract occurs in approximately 10% of cases. CASE PRESENTATION: A 71-year-old Caucasian woman with known diverticular disease of the colon and multiple myeloma diagnosed

Anomalous inferior mesenteric artery supplying the ascending, transverse, descending, and sigmoid colons.

We have encountered in our anatomical practice the first case and an extremely rare second case in which the ascending, transverse, descending, and sigmoid colons were supplied by the inferior mesenteric artery. The causes of colic artery anomalies are generally explained in conjunction with the development of the superior mesenteric artery, which is intimately related to embryonic elongation and midgut rotation. However, this embryological model was inapplicable to both cases. This difficulty motivated us to seek possible relationships with reported anomalous inferior mesenteric arteries in a

Submucosal lipoma of the sigmoid colon as a rare cause of mucoid diarrhea: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Symptomatic presentations of colonic lipomas are very rare in clinical practice, and may mimic colonic malignancy. The likelihood of presenting symptoms has been shown to depend on the size of the lesion. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe the case of a 72-year-old Sinhalese man presenting with worsening mucoid diarrhea who was subsequently diagnosed to have a lipoma of the sigmoid colon. His disease was successfully managed with endoscopic resection. CONCLUSION: Confidently establishing the rare diagnosis of a colonic lipoma usually requires a combination of endoscopic, radiological

[Transurethral resection of a intravesical recurrence of a tumor after resection of sigmoid colon cancer].

A 66-year-old man presented to the urology clinic with hematuria. Cystoscopy with biopsy was performed for suspected bladder cancer, and a pathological diagnosis of adenocarcinoma was made. Colonoscopy revealed sigmoid colon cancer, and he was referred to our hospital. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed sigmoid colon cancer with urinary bladder invasion. Sigmoidectomy with lymph node dissection and partial cystectomy were performed under laparotomy. The pathological diagnosis was moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma: T4b (bladder), N1, M0, and the bladder

Implantation metastasis from adenocarcinoma of the sigmoid colon into a perianal fistula: a case report.

Implantation metastasis from a colorectal cancer into a perianal fistula is very rare. Such lesions are commonly mistaken as benign perianal abscesses or fistulas and diagnosed only after pathological analysis of surgically excised fistulas. Once diagnosed, the management of this condition remains controversial. We report a case of perianal fistula that was unexpectedly found to harbor adenocarcinoma on biopsy. Further investigation by colonoscopy and computed tomography scan revealed a sigmoid adenocarcinoma. Abdominoperineal resection was performed. Histology and immunohistochemical staining

Leiomyosarcoma of the sigmoid colon with multiple liver metastases and gastric cancer: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Leiomyosarcoma (LMS) of the gastrointestinal tract is an extremely rare high-grade neoplasm with poor prognosis. For advanced LMS with distant metastasis, the decision as to the choice of the most appropriate therapeutic strategy, including chemotherapy and surgery, is difficult. Here, we present an unusual case of LMS of the sigmoid colon with liver metastases and gastric cancer. The survival of this patient was prolonged by a combined modality therapy involving chemotherapy and surgery. CASE PRESENTATION: A 66-year-old woman who had been diagnosed with advanced gastric cancer an

Anisakidosis of the sigmoid colon disguising as metastatic carcinoma: a case report and review of the literature.

Intestinal anisakidosis is a rare nematode infestation caused by the ingestion of larvae-infected raw or undercooked fish. Most cases are incidentally diagnosed during surgery for other reasons. We present such a case of anisakid larvae seen in a patient's sigmoid colon resected for adenocarcinoma, where a subserosal nodule caused by the inflammatory reaction to the worm was presumed to be a lymph node involved by metastatic tumor. With the increasing popularity of raw fish consumption, the incidence of this parasitic infection is bound to increase, requiring surgical pathologists to be cogniz
