Carvedilol inhibits EGF-mediated JB6 P+ colony formation through a mechanism independent of adrenoceptors.

Carvedilol is reported to prevent cancers in humans and animal models. However, a molecular mechanism has yet to be established, and the extent to which other β-blockers are chemopreventive remains relatively unknown. A comparative pharmacological approach was utilized with the expectation that a mechanism of action could be devised. JB6 Cl 41-5a (JB6 P+) murine epidermal cells were used to elucidate the chemopreventative properties of β-blockers, as JB6 P+ cells recapitulate in vivo tumor promotion and chemoprevention. The initial hypothesis was that β-blockers that are GRK/β-arrestin biased

Traditional Medicine Doctor Kim Gwangjin's Battle against Jaundice during the Japanese Colonial Period.

This study aims to examine how traditional medicine doctors of the Japanese colonial period in Korea treated patients and their own diseases with traditional medicine and Western medicine by analyzing Clinical Cases and A Diary of Jaundice Treatment of Kim Gwangjin (1885-1940). Through this inquiry, this study aims to reveal that the Japanese colonial period was a time when the traditional medicine and the Western medicine coexisted, and that this period cannot be simply defined as a dualism between "Western medicine, Japanese colonial government" versus "traditional medicine, governed public.

Neutropenia in glycogen storage disease Ib: outcomes for patients treated with granulocyte colony-stimulating factor.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Glycogen storage disease Ib (GSD Ib) is characterized by hepatomegaly, hypoglycemia, neutropenia, enterocolitis and recurrent bacterial infections. It is attributable to mutations in G6PT1, the gene for the glucose-6-phosphate transporter responsible for transport of glucose into the endoplasmic reticulum. Neutropenia in GSD Ib is now frequently treated with granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF). We formed a cooperative group to review outcomes of the long-term treatment of GSD Ib patients treated with G-CSF. RECENT FINDINGS: The study enrolled 103 patients (48 men

Rat polyomavirus 2 infection in a colony of X-linked severe combined immunodeficiency rats in Japan.

Polyomaviruses (PyVs) infect a wide range of animals and provoke wasting diseases, particularly in immunosuppressed hosts. Recently, a novel Rattus norvegicus polyomavirus 2 (RatPyV2) has been identified in a colony of X-linked severe combined immunodeficiency (X-SCID) rats in the United States. Here, we describe the first report of the RatPyV2 infection in an X-SCID rat colony in Japan. The affected rats exhibited adult-onset wasting. Histologically, we observed large basophilic intranuclear inclusion bodies within the hyperplastic or dysplastic epithelial cells in the salivary glands, Harder

Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor and respiratory status of critically ill neutropenic patients with hematologic malignancies.

In patients with hematologic malignancies, respiratory status may deteriorate during neutropenia recovery. This multicenter, observational study aims to evaluate granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) impact on respiratory status in critically ill neutropenic patients. Among 1011 critically ill patients with hematologic malignancies, 288 were neutropenic and included in this study. 201 (70%) did not receive G-CSF at day 1 or 2. After propensity score matching for the probability of receiving G-CSF at day 1 or 2, there was no association between G-CSF and respiratory deterioration at day

Multi-modal survey of Adélie penguin mega-colonies reveals the Danger Islands as a seabird hotspot.

Despite concerted international effort to track and interpret shifts in the abundance and distribution of Adélie penguins, large populations continue to be identified. Here we report on a major hotspot of Adélie penguin abundance identified in the Danger Islands off the northern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula (AP). We present the first complete census of Pygoscelis spp. penguins in the Danger Islands, estimated from a multi-modal survey consisting of direct ground counts and computer-automated counts of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) imagery. Our survey reveals that the Danger Islands host 751,

Infection, contagion and causality in Colonial Britain: the 1889-90 influenza pandemic and the British Medical Journal.

The influenza pandemic of 1889 was the first truly global flu outbreak in scope. Characterised by high morbidity and low mortality, it spread rapidly across Europe and the rest of the world along trading routes. It reached mainland Britain in December 1889. The responses of medical practitioners in Britain and the British colonies to the pandemic were heavily featured in the British Medical Journal and reveal a confusing picture around causality, contagion and infection. Cases from the colonies (Cape Town, India, Australia, Samoan Islands, Hong Kong) as presented in the journal are explored in

Acute and Chronic Outcomes of Gas-Bubble Disease in a Colony of African Clawed Frogs (Xenopus laevis).

Gas-bubble disease occurs in aquatic species that are exposed to water that is supersaturated with gases. In February 2007, municipal water supersaturated with gas was inadvertently pumped into the vivarium's aquatic housing systems and affected approximately 450 adult female Xenopus laevis. The inflow of supersaturated water was stopped immediately, the holding tanks aggressively aerated, and all experimental manipulations and feeding ceased. Within the first 6 h after the event, morbidity approached 90%, and mortality reached 3.5%. Acutely affected frogs showed clinical signs of gas-bubble d

Influence of Gelatin-Thrombin Matrix Tissue Sealant on Bacterial Colony Formation and Risk of Pelvic Infection.

Objective. Gelatin-thrombin matrix (GTM) tissue sealant use was previously identified as an independent predictor of pelvic infection following hysterectomies. We aim to elucidate contributing factors by assessing influence of GTM on bacterial colony formation and characterizing bacteria present at the vaginal cuff. Methods. Escherichia coli was incubated in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) and pelvic washings with and without GTM to assess influence on colony formation. Pelvic washings of the vaginal cuff were collected from hysterectomies occurring from June through October 2015. In vitro tec

Injecting epidemiology into population viability analysis: avian cholera transmission dynamics at an arctic seabird colony.

Infectious diseases have the potential to spread rapidly and cause high mortality within populations of immunologically naïve hosts. The recent appearance of avian cholera, a highly virulent disease of birds caused by the bacterium Pasteurella multocida, at remote Arctic seabird colonies is an emerging conservation concern. Determining disease risk to population viability requires a quantitative understanding of transmission potential and the factors that regulate epidemic persistence. Estimates of the basic (R0 ) and real-time (Rt ) reproductive number are critical in this regard - enumeratin

Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor and bone marrow mononuclear cells for stroke treatment in the aged brain.

Ischemic stroke swiftly induces a wide spectrum of pathophysiological sequelae, particularly in the aged brain. The translational failure of experimental therapies, might partially be related to monotherapeutic approaches, not address potential counter-mechanisms sufficiently or within the best time window. For example, therapeutic effects relying on stem/progenitor cell mobilization by granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF), require approximately a week to become manifest, which is potentially beyond the optimal timing. Here, We tested the hypothesis that treating post-stroke aged rats

Safety of recombinant human granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor in healing pediatric severe burns.

We explored the safety of recombinant human granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (rhGM-CSF) for healing burns in children. Subjects were randomly assigned to two groups: the experimental group received external rhGM-CSF gel, and the control group received rhGM-CSF gel matrix components, applied to the burn surface. Neither group was given any other drugs that promote wound healing. Each day we recorded the pulse, body temperature, and respiration status in the two groups. We detected the blood routine, urine routine, and hepatic and renal function before the patients received drug

Treatment with granulocyte colony-stimulating factor in patients with repetitive implantation failures and/or recurrent spontaneous abortions.

Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) belongs to the family of colony-stimulating factors (CSF). As the name suggests, it was initially identified as being able to target and influence granulopoiesis, but was soon shown to be a ubiquitous growth factor, with synthesis and receptors, such as the related granulocyte macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF), which is found in a wide variety of tissue types, including the organs and cell populations involved in reproduction. It must now be assumed that both G-CSF and GM-CSF control, or play a role in controlling, key processes in oocy

Stimulation of monocytes, macrophages, and microglia by amphotericin B and macrophage colony-stimulating factor promotes remyelination.

Approaches to stimulate remyelination may lead to recovery from demyelinating injuries and protect axons. One such strategy is the activation of immune cells with clinically used medications, since a properly directed inflammatory response can have healing properties through mechanisms such as the provision of growth factors and the removal of cellular debris. We previously reported that the antifungal medication amphotericin B is an activator of circulating monocytes, and their tissue-infiltrated counterparts and macrophages, and of microglia within the CNS. Here, we describe that amphoterici

Expression of colony-stimulating factor 1 is associated with occurrence of osteochondral change in pigmented villonodular synovitis.

Pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) is a benign, translocation-derived neoplasm. Because of its high local recurrence rate after surgery and occurrence of osteochondral destruction, a novel therapeutic target is required. The present study aimed to evaluate the significance of protein expression possibly associated with the pathogenesis during the clinical course of PVNS. In 40 cases of PVNS, positivity of colony-stimulated factor 1 (CSF1), its receptor (CSF1R), and receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa-B ligand (RANKL) were immunohistochemically determined. The relationship between t

The protective effect of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor on endometrium and ovary in a rat model of diabetes mellitus.

AIMS: To evaluate the effect of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) on the endometrium and ovaries in an experimental diabetes mellitus (DM) rat model. METHODS: A total of 18 female Sprague-Dawley albino mature rats (8 weeks, 200-220 g) were used in this study. Diabetes was induced by intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection of streptozocin randomly in 12 rats. No drug was administered to the remainder of the rats (control group, group 1, n = 6). The other 12 rats were randomly divided into 2 groups; 1 ml/kg i.p. saline was given as vehicle to group 2 (diabetic nontreated control group, n =

Quantitative analysis of morphological changes in yeast colonies growing on solid medium: the eccentricity and Fourier indices.

The colony shape of four yeast species growing on agar medium was measured for 116 days by image analysis. Initially, all the colonies are circular, with regular edges. The loss of circularity can be quantitatively estimated by the eccentricity index, Ei , calculated as the ratio between their orthogonal vertical and horizontal diameters. Ei can increase from 1 (complete circularity) to a maximum of 1.17-1.30, depending on the species. One colony inhibits its neighbour only when it has reached a threshold area. Then, Ei of the inhibited colony increases proportionally to the area of the inhibi
