Best practices for increasing access to SSI and SSDI on exit from criminal justice settings.

Transitioning from jail or prison to community living frequently results in homelessness and recidivism. Access to benefits such as Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Medicaid can increase access to housing and treatment and reduce recidivism. The authors review best practices for prerelease access to these benefits by using examples from five jails and four state prison systems. In these settings, approval rates for SSI applications averaged 70% or higher, with evidence of improved access to housing and reductions in recidivism. Success depends on the commitment of resources and leadershi

Opportunities and obstacles in developing a vaccine for Entamoeba histolytica.

The development of a vaccine against Entamoeba histolytica, the causative agent of amebic colitis and liver abscess, would reduce childhood mortality in countries such as Bangledesh where community-based studies have demonstrated a high prevalence of E. histolytica. Immunological studies from this population have shown that protection from amebiasis is associated with mucosal anti-E. histolytica Gal/GalNAc lectin antibodies, suggesting that a vaccine is an achievable goal. However, garnering resources for vaccine development is a challenge when the vaccine is targeted to poor people living in

Primary Health Care in rural Malawi - a qualitative assessment exploring the relevance of the community-directed interventions approach.

BACKGROUND: Primary Health Care (PHC) is a strategy endorsed for attaining equitable access to basic health care including treatment and prevention of endemic diseases. Thirty four years later, its implementation remains sub-optimal in most Sub-Saharan African countries that access to health interventions is still a major challenge for a large proportion of the rural population. Community-directed treatment with ivermectin (CDTi) and community-directed interventions (CDI) are participatory approaches to strengthen health care at community level. Both approaches are based on values and principl

A GIS-based thermal mapping and forecasting approach to decarbonize residential heating systems based on metals: A city-level case study.

Decarbonizing residential heating requires the widespread implementation of cleaner energy infrastructures. The absence of reliable technologies to phase out natural gas from this sector remains as a key barrier in arresting residential emissions. A methodology to quantify community resources with energetic value to meet residential heating demands is developed. The enabling technology is a seasonal energy storage model that relies on community scrap metals to produce hydrogen and heat on demand via metal-water reactions. A comprehensive geospatial quantification of suitable metal stocks at th…

Exploring the Role of Lower Back Pain in the Indian Community: A Comprehensive Review of Epidemiology, Risk Factors, and Culturally Tailored Interventions.

Lower back pain (LBP) poses a significant health challenge globally, particularly within the Indian community. This review article synthesizes current knowledge on the epidemiology, risk factors, and culturally tailored interventions for LBP in India. Drawing from an extensive literature review and analysis of 20 surveys, we elucidate the complex interplay between lifestyle choices, occupational factors, and poor posture as primary contributors to chronic LBP. Importantly, our findings reveal a notable disparity in LBP prevalence, with rural women experiencing a disproportionately high burden

Emergency Department Use by Community-Dwelling Individuals With Dementia in the United States: An Integrative Review.

As part of the National Plan to Address Alzheimer's Disease, reducing potentially avoidable emergency department (ED) use by individuals with dementia has been identified as a component of enhancing the quality and efficiency of care for this population. To help inform the development of interventions to achieve this goal, an integrative review was conducted to: (a) compare rates and reasons for ED visits by community-dwelling individuals with and without dementia, considering also the effect of dementia subtype and severity; and (b) identify other risk factors for increased ED use among commu

Distressed community index as a predictor of metabolic and bariatric surgery outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is associated with serious health and social consequences. Socioeconomically disadvantaged people are less likely to undergo metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS) than their socioeconomically advantaged counterparts and experience increased complications or health care resource utilization, such as longer length of stay. The Economic Innovation Group's Distressed Communities Index (DCI) offers a metric to broadly assess socioeconomic distress. OBJECTIVES: This study investigated the relationship between community distress, as determined by DCI, and complications following
