PURPOSE: Life satisfaction refers to a cognitive and global evaluation of the quality of one's life as a whole. The arguably most often used measure of life satisfaction is the Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS). Persons with mental disorders generally report lower SWLS scores than healthy controls, yet there is a lack of studies that have compared different diagnostic groups, tested measurement invariance of the SWLS across these groups, and examined effects of treatment on life satisfaction.
METHODS: Data of 9649 inpatients of seven diagnostic categories were analyzed: depressive episode,

Predicting treatment efficacy in psychiatric disorders remains challenging, despite the availability of effective interventions. Previous studies suggest a link between pre-treatment brain network characteristics and treatment efficacy in individual disorders, but cross-disorder investigations are lacking. We analyzed pre-treatment MRI data from 177 individuals (113 females) with either obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) or post-traumatic stress disorder with comorbid personality disorders (PTSD) that received different non-pharmacological treatments. Using diffusion and resting-state MRI, we

BACKGROUND: Limited numbers of studies have examined the prevalence of OCD systematically in consecutively sampled adult bipolar disorder type I (BD-I) patients. We examined the frequency of OCD in a large number (n=396) of consecutively hospitalized patients with BD-I and identified socio-demographic and clinical correlates of BD-I with and without OCD.
METHOD: BD-I patients (n=396) were assessed using the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview for Bipolar Disorder Studies, the Structured clinical interview for (Axis II) DSM-IV, the Family interview for genetic studies, the Yale-Brown

BACKGROUND: While avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) occurs across the lifespan, most previous research focused on children and adolescents. Particularly, individual impairment and progression patterns in adults remain largely unknown. Therefore, this study aimed to explore individual impairment and to identify progression patterns and associated psychological and sociodemographic characteristics in adults with ARFID.
METHODS: Data from N = 97 adults from the community with an interview-based diagnosis of ARFID were utilized. Participants took part in an online study on ARFID a

PURPOSE: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a debilitating disease accompanied by physical and mental comorbidities. Little is known about the relation between different comorbidities and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in people with MS (pwMS). Therefore, we designed this study to assess the association between comorbidities and HRQOL.
METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, of 976 pwMS attending the MS clinic of Kashani Hospital in Isfahan, Iran were assessed. The data on comorbidity were extracted from patients' medical records. The 36-Item Short Form Survey (SF-36) was used to measure HRQO

BACKGROUND: Routinely-collected mental health data could deliver novel insights for mental health research. However, patients' willingness to share their mental health data remains largely unknown. We investigated factors influencing likelihood of sharing these data for research purposes amongst people with and without experience of mental illness.
METHODS: We collected responses from a diverse sample of UK National Health Service (NHS) users (n = 2187) of which about half (n = 1087) had lifetime experience of mental illness. Ordinal logistic regression was used to examine the influence of de

The question of whether a psychodynamic view is compatible with experimental research is still a challenging issue-especially for child and adolescent psychopathology-despite the influence of psychoanalytic theory in this field until the 1980s. In this article, is explored the relationship between psychodynamic theory and experimental research using examples of evidence-based studies in the fields of (i) psychotherapeutic intervention assessment, (ii) placebo response in children and adolescents, (iii) unconscious lasting traumatic effects in children and adolescents, (iv) psychodynamic-orient

The São Paulo Megacity Mental Health Survey is a population-based cross-sectional survey of psychiatric morbidity, assessing a probabilistic sample of household residents in the São Paulo Metropolitan Area, aged 18 years and over. Respondents were selected from a stratified multistage clustered area probability sample of households, covering all 39 municipalities, without replacement. Respondents were assessed using the World Mental Health Survey version of the World Health Organization Composite International Diagnostic Interview (WMH-CIDI), which was translated and adapted into the Brazilian

Compulsive Querulousness (CQ) is a term for behaviour characterised by an exaggerated feeling of righteousness and is not a specific ingredient of any particular psychiatric illness. CQ was well represented in psychiatric literature until the year 1960 both in textbooks and in single-case studies, but has disappeared from clinical psychiatric interest in the last 30 years. In the first part of our study we present the syndrome in its various facets (epidemiology, aetiology, categorisation, symptoms, therapy). In an epidemiological study we extracted in chronological order all patients with com

Sexual minority men disproportionately experience childhood sexual abuse (CSA) compared to heterosexual men, resulting in greater risk of psychiatric and substance use diagnoses, sexual risk taking, and HIV acquisition later in life. However, little is known about psychiatric and substance use disparities between gay and bisexual men who have experienced CSA. We recruited a purposive convenience sample in Boston and Miami, involving self-report and clinical interview data from 290 sexual minority men (M age = 38.0 years) who reported CSA, defined as unwanted sexual contact before 13 years of a

The term stalking describes a pattern of behavior in which the victim is pursued, pestered and threatened. In many cases, the stalker resorts to physical violence, and may even commit murder. In the German-speaking areas, the phenomenon is to date not much discussed in the psychiatric and psychological literature, despite the fact that it is a widespread occurrence. While stalkers are diagnosed as suffering from schizophrenia and/or narcissistic as well as borderline disorders, victims have no typical "victim personality". They do, however, respond to stalking with anxiety, depression and post

BACKGROUND: The role of memory in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) has been an area of research that has yielded mixed results, particularly in prospective memory (PM) functioning. Hence, one objective of the study was to assess PM deficits in patients with OCD. Also, research in this area has been sparse, and most researchers have used questionnaires and people with subclinical symptoms of OCD, which might have impacted the generalizability of the findings. Thus, the second objective was to assess PM functioning using a performance-based task in persons with OCD having clinical symptoms.

The retrospective and subjective nature of clinical interviews is an important shortcoming of current psychiatric diagnosis. Consequently, there is a clear need for objective and standardized tools. Virtual reality (VR) can be used to achieve controlled symptom provocation, which allows direct assessment for the clinician. We developed a video VR game to provoke and assess obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) symptoms in a standardized and controlled environment. The first objective was to evaluate if the VR game is capable of provoking symptoms in OCD patients as opposed to healthy controls. T

INTRODUCTION: Cluster headache (CH) is usually comorbid to mood spectrum disorders, but the psychopathological aspects are poorly explored. We aimed at identifying discrete profiles of personality traits and their association with clinical features.
METHODS: Based on the personality scales of the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory-III, principal component analysis (PCA) identified psychological patterns of functioning of 56 CH patients. PCA outcomes were used for hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) for sub-groups classification.
RESULTS: Eighty-seven percent of patients had personality dys

In order to address recent debates on the extent to which deep brain stimulation (DBS) causes changes to core personal traits, Zuk and colleagues (2022) interviewed researchers about their experience with changes in personality, mood, and behavior while using DBS to treat a variety of neurological and psychiatric disorders. Here, we explore how considering these issues with respect to key neuroscientific and clinical details such as conditions and brain regions can aid interpretations of changes in core personal traits. We describe how clinicians treating Parkinson’s disease or obsessive-compu

OBJECTIVE: Previous research has established a strong association between obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and elevated suicidality; however, the impact of the severity of obsessive-compulsive symptoms (OCSs) on suicidality and the mechanisms underlying this influence remain insufficiently understood. Impulsivity is a strongly predictive factor for suicidality and positively correlated with OCD. Based on self-control depletion theory and dual-regulation models, OCSs might increase suicidality via impulsivity. Therefore, the present study aims to explore their relationship and the potential

Background: Childhood maltreatment is associated with various psychiatric disorders, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and personality disorders (PDs). Previous research has suggested that PTSD and PD are highly comorbid. However, the impact of different types of childhood maltreatment on the severity of PTSD and PD symptoms in a clinical population with PTSD/PD symptoms remains unclear. Objective: We aimed to clarify the role of (a) the overall severity and (b) the severity of subtypes of childhood maltreatment on the severity of (a) PTSD and (b) comorbid PD symptoms. Methods: Dat
