Role of antigen specific T and B cells in systemic and mucosal immune responses in ETEC and Shigella infections, and their potential to serve as correlates of protection in vaccine development.

The generation of robust systemic and mucosal antibody and cell-mediated immune (CMI) responses that are protective, long-lasting, and can quickly be recalled upon subsequent re-exposure to the cognate antigen is the key to the development of effective vaccine candidates. These responses, whether they represent mechanistic or non-mechanistic immunological correlates of protection, usually entail the activation of T cell memory and effector subsets (T-CMI) and induction of long-lasting memory B cells. However, for ETEC and Shigella, the precise role of these key immune cells in primary and seco

Patient led conferences--who attends, are their expectations met and do they vary in three different countries?

OBJECTIVE: To determine the demographics of attendees at three national conferences for trigeminal neuralgia sufferers, to quantify their expectations and determine if they were fulfilled. DESIGN: A self complete questionnaire was distributed at the start and end of patient led conferences delivered by health care practitioners (HCP). PARTICIPANTS: 249 sufferers, most of whom were members of their support group. SETTING: National conferences in US, UK and Australia organised by the Trigeminal Neuralgia Associations of the respective countries. RESULTS: 83% of attendees completed the questi

Live-case demonstrations in pediatric urology: Ethics, patient safety, and clinical outcomes from an 8-year institutional experience.

PURPOSE: Live case demonstrations have become a common occurrence at surgical meetings around the world. These demonstrations are meant to serve as an educational medium for teaching techniques, promote discussion, improve interventions and outcomes. Despite the valuable educational benefits, many authors still question the ethics of this approach. We present our 8-year experience in live surgery, discuss the ethical issues, and provide recommendations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We reviewed records of patients who underwent live robotic surgery during broadcasting events. Procedures performed we

Fourth meeting of the Eastern Mediterranean Acute Respiratory Infection Surveillance (EMARIS) network and first scientific conference on acute respiratory infections in the Eastern Mediterranean Region, 11-14 December, 2017, Amman, Jordan.

Influenza causes significant morbidity and mortality worldwide. Owing to its ability to rapidly evolve and spread, the influenza virus is of global public health importance. Information on the burden, seasonality and risk factors of influenza in countries of the World Health Organization Eastern Mediterranean Region is emerging because of collaborative efforts between countries, WHO and its partners over the past 10 years. The fourth meeting of the Eastern Mediterranean Acute Respiratory Infection Surveillance network was held in Amman, Jordan on 11-14 December 2017. The meeting reviewed the p

Big Data in the Assessment of Pediatric Medication Safety.

Big data (BD) in pediatric medication safety research provides many opportunities to improve the safety and health of children. The number of pediatric medication and device trials has increased in part because of the past 20 years of US legislation requiring and incentivizing study of the effects of medical products in children (Food and Drug Administration Modernization Act of 1997, Pediatric Rule in 1998, Best Pharmaceuticals for Children Act of 2002, and Pediatric Research Equity Act of 2003). There are some limitations of traditional approaches to studying medication safety in children. R

The role of HLA-B27 in spondyloarthritis.

This article summarizes the proceedings of a one-day international workshop held in July 2009 on the role of HLA-B27 in the pathogenesis of ankylosing spondylitis (AS) and related disorders. HLA-B27 is found in about 90% of patients with AS, with an odds ratio of about 100, but the mechanism underlying this association is not known. There are currently 3 major mechanistic hypotheses for this association: (1) T cell recognition of one or more B27 presented peptides; (2) B27 heavy-chain misfolding that induces an unfolded protein response; and (3) innate immune recognition of cell-surface expres

Therapeutic Effects of Propolis Supplementation on the Inflammatory State, Oxidative Stress, and Uremic Toxins in dialysis Patients: A Systematic Review.

Chronic renal failure (CRF) is a global health issue, particularly affecting the elderly. The end stage of CRF requires dialysis that it often results in complications such as inflammation, oxidative stress, infections, and various kidney issues. Propolis, a natural bee product rich in antioxidants, may help mitigate these risks for dialysis patients. To search for related articles, we utilized the Cochrane Library, EMBASE, ClinicalTrials.gov, Google Scholar, MEDLINE via PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and SID databases without any time limitation, up to May 2025. We included all clinical tria

Dysphagia in the high-risk infant: potential factors and mechanisms.

Neonatal dysphagia, or abnormalities of swallowing, represent a major global problem, and consequences of dysfunctional feeding patterns carry over into infancy and toddler age groups. Growth, development, and independent feeding skills are all delayed among high-risk infants. Such a group comprises premature birth, low-birth-weight, congenital anomalies, perinatal asphyxia, postsurgical, and sepsis categories. The conflict between pathophysiologic and pragmatic feeding strategies remains a major conundrum and is largely due to a lack of validated diagnostic approaches amid heterogeneity of th

Occurrence, management, and outcome of thoracic outlet syndrome in a National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I conference.

OBJECTIVE: Thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS; neurovascular compression at the thoracic outlet) is a disabling condition affecting the upper extremities. Athletes are at risk of developing TOS. Prior reports of TOS in athletes have been largely restricted to single-center experiences. No data at the level of a National Athletic Conference have been reported previously. Our objective was to describe the epidemiology of TOS in a National Collegiate Athletic Association division I conference. METHODS: Athletes with TOS were identified in the prospectively maintained Pacific 12 Health Analytics Progr

A strategic action framework for multipurpose prevention technologies combining contraceptive hormones and antiretroviral drugs to prevent pregnancy and HIV.

OBJECTIVE: Multipurpose prevention technologies (MPTs) are an innovative class of products that deliver varied combinations of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) prevention, other sexually transmitted infection (STI) prevention, and contraception. Combining separate strategies for different indications into singular prevention products can reduce the stigma around HIV and STI prevention, improve acceptability of and adherence to more convenient products, and be more cost-effective by addressing overlapping risks. METHODS: This article outlines a strategic action framework developed as an outc

Opportunities in abdominal aortic aneurysm research: epidemiology, genetics, and pathophysiology.

Aortic aneurysms are a complex genetic disorder with known environmental risk factors such as smoking. Along the length of the aorta, significant heterogeneity occurs in the distribution of aneurysmal disease. The prevalence of aneurysm in the abdominal aorta is at least nine times higher than that in the thoracic section of the aorta. A number of studies have shown that aortic aneurysms are frequently familial, even when they are not associated with rare heritable disorders such as Marfan syndrome or Ehlers-Danlos syndrome type IV. The pathobiology of aortic aneurysms is complex and largely u

Assessment and further development of RDC/TMD Axis II biobehavioural instruments: a research programme progress report.

A symposium was held in Toronto, 2008, in which research progress regarding the biobehavioural dimension of the Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (RDC/TMD) was presented. An extended workshop was held in April 2009 in which further recommendations were made from an expert panel, using the 2008 symposium material as a base. This paper is a summary of the 2008 symposium proceedings with elaborations based on further developments. Seven studies were conducted between 2001 and 2008, in which the following were investigated: (i) basic properties of Axis II instruments, (i

The pediatric cardiomyopathy registry and heart failure: key results from the first 15 years.

Cardiomyopathy is a serious disorder of the heart muscle and, although rare, is a common cause of heart failure in children and the most common cause for heart transplantation in children older than 1 year of age. Funded by the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute since 1994, the Pediatric Cardiomyopathy Registry (PCMR) has followed more than 3500 North American children with cardiomyopathy. Early analyses determined estimates for the incidence of pediatric cardiomyopathy (1.13 cases per 100,000 children per year), risk factors for cardiomyopathy (age <1 year, male sex, black race, and livi
