Direct-Acting Oral Anticoagulant/Vitamin K Antagonists: Do They Affect the Trabecular and Cortical Structure of the Mandible?

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to evaluate the mandibular bone structure of patients using oral anticoagulants (OACs) vitamin K antagonist dru … in the condyle, angle, and two sites in the alveolar bone. PMI was used to evaluate the quantity of cortical bone and KI was used to evaluate the cortical bone quality. RESULTS: There was no difference between the groups regarding FD analysis and KI; however, a difference was found between groups 1, 2, and 3 in the PMI (P≤ 0.001). The PMI in group 1 was higher …

Endocortical bone loss in osteoporosis: the role of bone surface availability.

Age-related bone loss and postmenopausal osteoporosis are due to a dysregulation of bone remodelling in which less bone is reformed than resorbed. This dysregulation of bone remodelling does not occur with equal strength in all bone regions. Loss of bone is more pronounced near the endocortical surface. This leads to thinning of the cortical wall proceeding from the endosteum, a process sometimes called 'trabecularisation'. In this paper, we investigate the influence of the nonuniform distribution of bone surface within bone tissue for osteoporotic bone losses. We use a spatio-temporal computa

Population-based study of age and sex differences in bone volumetric density, size, geometry, and structure at different skeletal sites.

UNLABELLED: In a population-based, cross-sectional study, we assessed age- and sex-specific changes in bone structure by QCT. Over life, the … ing, cortical area decreased slightly, and the cortex was displaced outwardly by periosteal and endocortical bone remodeling. Cortical vBMD decreased over life more in women ( approximately 25%) than in men (approximately 18%, p < 0.001), consistent with menopausal-induced increases in bone turnover and bone porosity. CONCLUSIONS: Age-related changes in bone a …

Bone Stress Injuries at the Ankle and Foot.

Bone stress injuries (BSIs) are a frequent finding in athletes, particularly of the foot and ankle. A BSI is caused by recurring microtrauma … cortical versus trabecular bone. Conventional radiographs may remain normal up to 2 to 3 weeks. For cortical bone, early signs of BSIs are a periosteal reaction or the "gray cortex sign," followed by cortical thickening and fracture line depiction. In trabecular bone, a sclerotic dense line may be seen. Magnetic resonance imaging enables early detection of BSIs …

Impaired bone health after pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia treatment despite normal DXA: insights from high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography.

INTRODUCTION: Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is the most common cancer in childhood. With improved survival rates, more attention has turned to long-term outcomes such as bone health. High-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography (HR-pQCT) allows a three-dimensional assessment of cortical and trabecular bone and may have advantages over standard dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). The aim of this study was to evaluate whether HR-pQCT can detect early bone health impairment in children following ALL treatment. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, HR-pQCT findings in ch

Bone malformations in interleukin-18 transgenic mice.

The in vivo effects of IL-18 on bone metabolism were investigated by histopathology in IL-18 transgenic mice. Deformed cortical bone and decreased turnover rate of lumbar trabecular bone are consistent with increased expression of IFN-gamma and IL-18 in the bone marrow. Interleukin (IL)-18 has been demonstrated to inhibit osteoclastogenesis in an in vitro co-culture system. We investigated the effects of IL-18 overexpression on bone metabolism by comparing bone characteristics in male IL-18 transgenic (TG) mice, which secrete mature murine IL-18 from their B- and T-cells, and their wildtype li…

Age- and gender-related differences in the geometric properties and biomechanical significance of intracortical porosity in the distal radius and tibia.

Cortical bone contributes the majority of overall bone mass and bears the bulk of axial loads in the peripheral skeleton. Bone metabolic disorders often are manifested by cortical microstructural changes via osteonal remodeling and endocortical trabecularization. The goal of this study was to characterize intracortical porosity in a cross-sectional patient cohort using novel quantitative computational methods applied to high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography (HR-pQCT) images of the distal radius and tibia. The distal radius and tibia of 151 subjects (57 male, 94 female; 47…

Incorporation of composite bone implants in the facial skeleton.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the capacity of composite grafts consisting of either particulated cancellous or particulated cortical bone and anorganic bovine bone mineral (BBM) (Bio-Oss) to induce regeneration in standardized critical size bony defects overlying the frontal sinus. Four full thickness critical size bone defects were made in the frontal bone in each of 8 skeletally mature female goats. Mechanical behavior of screws in normal and osteoporotic bone.

Fracture fixation in severe osteoporotic bone by means of implants that rely on screw anchorage is still a clinical problem. So far, a sufficiently accurate prediction of the holding capacity of screws as a function of local bone morphology has not been obtained. In this study the ultimate pullout loads of screws in the epi-, meta-, and diaphyseal regions of human tibiae were correlated to the cortical thicknesses and cancellous bone mineral densities at the screw axes determined from QCT densitometric data. Stepwise multiple linear regression showed that in regions with cortical thicknesses b

Melorheostosis: A Clinical, Pathologic, and Radiologic Case Series.

Melorheostosis is a rare sclerosing bone disease characterized by excessive cortical bone deposition that is frequently on the differential diagnosis for bone biopsies. Although the radiologic pattern of "dripping candle wax" is well known, the pathologic findings have been poorly defined. Here, we comprehensively describe the histology of melorheostosis in 15 patients who underwent bone biopsies. Common histologic findings included: dense cortical bone (73.3%), woven bone (60%), and hypervascular features and increased porosity (66.7%). One third of the patients (5/15) also had prominent ceme…

Relationships between quantitative histological measurements and noninvasive assessments of bone mass.

We performed a comprehensive analysis of the relationships between histologic indices in the iliac crest (cancellous bone volume, trabecular structural indices, cortical width, and core width) and bone density in the spine, hip, and wrist in 81 patients with various metabolic bone diseases including osteoporosis, osteomalacia, hyperparathyroidism, and Paget's disease. In the whole group, all of the histologic indices correlated significantly with bone mineral density (BMD) of the spine and the three regions of the hip (r = 0.28-0.73), with the exception of cortical width which correlated with
