Arsenic contamination in paddy soils threatens crop productivity and results in the accumulation of toxic arsenic in rice grains. Here, we demonstrate that a defined synthetic microbial community (SynCom) of Priestia flexa and Pseudomonas putida mitigates arsenic toxicity and restricts arsenic accumulation in rice (Oryza sativa var. Sarju-52). Under arsenic stress [As(III), 18 mg/kg; As(V), 50 mg/kg], plants exhibited impaired growth, reduced photosynthetic performance, and increased oxidative stress. Inoculation with SynCom restored physiological function and metabolic balance, as evidenced b

Contamination of agricultural soils with per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) is now widespread and common throughout the world due to management practices such as biosolid application. Crop and pasture plants can readily take up and accumulate PFAS in their tissues, which eventually end up in food products or livestock feed and lead to health issues. This study investigated how arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi affect plant PFAS uptake in three important cereal crop species (barley, bread wheat, durum wheat), using a combination of soils that were artificially spiked or naturally conta

Herbicide carryover from wheat production can injure sensitive rotational cash crops, but compound-specific replanting guidance under matched soil and climatic conditions is limited. We combined an optimized QuEChERS method with ultra-high performance liquid chromatography to quantify soil residues of mesosulfuron-methyl, pyroxsulam, diflufenican, and pyroxasulfone and evaluate the phytotoxicity of these herbicides to rotational chili and tobacco. The recoveries of the four herbicides at 0.1-1 mg/kg spiking levels ranged from 74.42 to 117.33%, which fell within the acceptable recovery range fo

Enhancing lipid accumulation by redirecting carbon from starch to triacylglycerol (TAG) in vegetative tissues is a promising strategy for developing high-energy-density crops for bioenergy production. However, our understanding of how starch and TAG metabolism interact and how this interaction affects growth and photosynthesis is incomplete. Here, we investigated the metabolic and physiological consequences of disrupting starch biosynthesis and TAG turnover in Arabidopsis thaliana by generating single, double, and triple mutants involving ADG1 (starch biosynthesis), TGD1 (lipid trafficking), a

Sugarcane crop is used for making several eco-friendly food products, making it one of the most important crops in the world. Issues in how sugarcane gets from the field to the factory like hidden dealings and fake shortages, really hurt farmers' earnings and even national economies. The way things are currently managed varies a lot in openness, making it tough for authorities to catch illegal exports or guarantee farmers get paid fairly. To tackle these problems, this article suggests a new system built on blockchain technology. It is designed to make the sugarcane supply chain more traceable

Severe aphid infestations drive unsustainable pesticide use, necessitating deeper understanding of aphid-plant-microbe interactions. To control those pests like aphids, which may cause severe infestations on vegetables and field crops, we need to understand how they maintain the relationship with the host plant. So, these studies compiled interesting characteristics of microbial involvements in plant-aphid interaction and the specific roles of bacterial communities, and how those impact the actual interactions between aphids and their plant hosts. This includes aphid-sympathetic (obligate and

The co-evolutionary arms race between crops and their parasites requires continuous identification of new resistance mechanisms. Broomrape (Orobanche cumana), a root parasitic plant, poses a severe threat to sunflower (Helianthus annuus) production, yet the genetic architecture underlying host resistance remains poorly understood. To address this, we established a high-throughput phenotyping platform to quantify root infestation across a diverse sunflower association mapping (SAM) population. Combining this phenotypic resource with a dual genome-wide association study (GWAS) strategy based on

BACKGROUND: Mycotoxin-producing fungal species and their mycotoxins pose a global threat for crop production and for human and animal health. Given the increasing demand for healthier food and feed, alternative non-pesticide approaches for reducing fungal infections in crops and eliminating mycotoxin contamination in feedstock are becoming more prevalent. For such purposes, yeast species can be good candidates. Thus, the present study examined the mycotoxin tolerance and mycotoxin elimination ability of several yeast strains belonging to the Trichomonascaceae family.
RESULTS: While none of th…

In accordance with human life, agriculture has main role in it, and in addition to that most people are involved in some kind of agricultural activity either in a direct or indirect manner. Moreover, the agricultural sectors acquired a major role in supplying better quality food and thus made the greatest attribution to the growth of populations and economics. But, the disease over the crop has influenced the growth of the corresponding species and thus requires an earlier diagnosis of plant disease by utilizing the most adequate and automatic detection approach for improving the quality of th

The excessive use of synthetic chemical pesticides in agriculture has led to the emergence of resistant insect populations, posing significant threats to both ecosystems and human health. As part of sustainable pest management, Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies have increasingly incorporated eco-friendly alternatives, such as plant ethanolic extracts, to reduce chemical pesticide dependency. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of ethanolic extracts from Cannabis sativa L., Citrullus colocynthis L. Schrad., and Laurus nobilis L. in controlling tomato crop pests. Repellency

The widespread and indiscriminate application of insecticides within agricultural systems results in phytotoxic effects on non-target crops. Furthermore, the processes by which plants adapt and develop resistance to these agricultural chemicals are still not fully understood. This study provided a detailed analysis of the antioxidant enzyme responses, growth, photosynthetic activity, and pigment content under insecticide imidacloprid exposure on rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) plants to shed light on this issue. It has been observed that imidacloprid causes phytotoxicity in rapeseed, especially a

BACKGROUND: Natural products are an important source for the development of herbicides. Tenuazonic acid (TeA) is a natural phytotoxin produced by phytopathogenic fungi that strongly inhibits photosystem II (PS II) by preventing electron flow from the primary quinone acceptor (QA) of PS II to the secondary quinone acceptor (QB), thereby directly disrupting the key chain of plant photosynthesis.
RESULTS: A series of TeA derivatives were rationally designed and synthesized based on the PS II D1 protein, and their herbicidal activities were evaluated. Compound C11 achieved > 90% control of Abutil

The Lemnaceae (duckweeds) are the world's smallest but fastest-growing flowering plants. Prolific clonal propagation facilitates continuous micro-cropping for plant-based protein and starch production and holds tremendous promise for sequestration of atmospheric CO2. Here, we present chromosomal assemblies, annotations, and phylogenomic analysis of Lemna genomes that uncover candidate genes responsible for the unique metabolic and developmental traits of the family, such as anatomical reduction, adaxial stomata, lack of stomatal closure, and carbon sequestration via crystalline calcium oxalate

Cadmium (Cd) has become an important heavy metal pollutant because of its strong migration and high toxicity. The industrial production process aggravated the Cd pollution in rice fields. Human exposure to Cd through rice can cause kidney damage, emphysema, and various cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, posing a grave threat to health. As modern technology develops, the Cd accumulation model in rice and in-situ remediation of Cd pollution in cornfields have been extensively studied and applied, so it is necessary to sort out and summarize them systematically. Therefore, this paper reviewed

Iron deficiency is a major nutritional stress that severely impacts crop productivity worldwide. However, molecular intricacies and subsequent physiological and metabolic changes in response to Fe starvation, especially in leguminous crops like chickpea, remain elusive. In the present study, we investigated physiological, transcriptional, and metabolic reprogramming in two chickpea genotypes (H6013 and L4958) with contrasting seed iron concentrations upon Fe deficiency. Our findings revealed that iron starvation affected growth and physiological parameters of both chickpea genotypes. Comparati

Protein-energy malnutrition is a state of disordered catabolism resulting from metabolic derangements or starvation. It is associated with chronic disease, hypoglycemia, hypothermia, serious infections, and even an increased prevalence of morbidity and mortality in countries with poor socioeconomic or environmental factors. Adequate food administration is essential to satisfy the main caloric and nutritional demands of humans. The most significant factors seen in the development of protein-energy malnutrition in areas of high incidence, such as underdeveloped countries, are inadequate food and

As key players in biotic stress response of plants, jasmonic acid (JA) and its derivatives cover a specific and prominent role in pathogens-mediated signaling and hence are promising candidates for a sustainable management of phytopathogenic fungi. Recently, JA directed antimicrobial effects on plant pathogens has been suggested, supporting the theory of oxylipins as double gamers in plant-pathogen interaction. Based on these premises, six derivatives (dihydrojasmone and cis-jasmone, two thiosemicarbazonic derivatives and their corresponding complexes with copper) have been evaluated against 1

Recycling residues is a sustainable alternative to improve soil structure and increase the stock of nutrients. However, information about the magnitude and duration of disturbances caused by crop and industrial wastes on soil microbial community structure and function is still scarce. The objective of this study was to investigate how added residues from industry and crops together with nitrogen (N) fertiliser affect the microbial community structure and function, and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions. The experimental sugarcane field had the following treatments: (I) control with nitrogen, phosph

Anthropogenic land use change, including agriculture, can alter mosquito larval habitat quality, increase mosquito abundance, and increase incidence of vector-borne disease. Rice is a staple food crop for more than half of the world's population, with ∼1% of global production occurring within the United States (US). Flooded rice fields provide enormous areas of larval habitat for mosquito species and may be hotspots for mosquito-borne pathogens, including West Nile virus (WNV). West Nile virus was introduced into the Americas in 1999 and causes yearly epidemics in the US with an average of app
