Evaluation of the cross-neutralization activities elicited by Coxsackievirus A10 vaccine strains.

Increased severity of diseases caused by Coxsackievirus A10 (CV-A10) as well as a large number of mutants and recombinants circulating in the population are a cause of concern for public health. A vaccine with broad-spectrum and homogenous protective capacity is needed to prevent outbreaks of CV-A10. Here, we evaluated cross-neutralization of prototype strain and 17 CV-A10 strains from related manufacturers in mainland China in vitro using 30 samples of plasma collected from naturally infected human adults and 18 sera samples from murine immunized with the above strains of CV-A10. Both human p

Endoglin-based assessment of neoangiogenesis in sporadic VIII cranial nerve schwannoma.

Although the diagnosis and treatment of sporadic vestibular schwannoma has improved in recent years, no factors capable of predicting its growth have been identified as yet. Endoglin (CD105) is a proliferation-associated protein expressed in angiogenic endothelial cells, and a potential prognostic indicator for several solid tumors. The aim of the present study was primarily to investigate the expression and role of CD105 in a series of sporadic vestibular nerve schwannomas. In 71 consecutive cases of vestibular schwannoma, vessel cross-sectional area and density were calculated from immunohis

Transwomen and the Metabolic Syndrome: Is Orchiectomy Protective?

Background: Male-to-female transsexual women or transwomen who undergo cross-sex hormone treatments experience increased health-related risks (e.g., increased rates of cardiovascular disease and premature death). Yet, the exact mechanism by which altering biochemistry leads to metabolic impairment remains unclear. While much attention has been paid to cross-sex hormone therapy, little is known about the metabolic risk associated with orchiectomy. Methods: To address the above limitation, we prospectively enrolled 12 transwomen: 4 who had undergone bi-lateral orchiectomy and 8 who had not. Both

Relationship between bone metabolism and plasma cytokine levels in patients at risk of post-transplantation bone disease after bone marrow transplantation.

Bone marrow transplant recipients may carry an increased risk of bone diseases, involving numerous factors that affect bone mineral metabolism. Interleukin-6 is a potent stimulator of bone resorption in vivo. The soluble fraction of interleukin-6 receptor is reported to trigger osteoclast formation by interleukin-6 in vitro. In a cross-sectional study we measured serum bone alkaline phosphatase concentrations and the urinary excretion of pyridinium cross-links in 21 patients after bone marrow transplantation, and investigated the relationship between these values and those for the plasma level

Investigating cerebral blood flow dysregulation and serum zinc correlation in 2-4 year-old children with autism spectrum disorder.

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a severe neurodevelopmental condition. Its incidence is on the rise worldwide, and in severe cases, it can lead to disability. While emerging evidence implicates cerebrovascular dysfunction in the pathophysiology of neurodevelopmental impairments associated with ASD, systematic characterization of cerebral hemodynamic variations across clinically stratified severity subgroups, particularly among mild-moderate and severe ASD presentations and typically developing (TD) children, remains a critical unmet research need. METHODS: This cross-sectional n

Reply to the comment on "Fluid restriction in management of patent ductus arteriosus in Italy: a nationwide survey".

The Authors Chang Liu B.S and Yuan Shi commented our paper on Fluid restriction in management of patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) in Italy. With our study, we conducted a prospective cross-sectional survey among all Italian Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) to address conservative management of patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) in preterm infants below 29 weeks' gestational age (GA), with specific regard to fluid restriction (FR). The Authors wondered if the heterogeneity of use of fluid restriction both as a prophylactic tool and as a conservative tool when a hemodynamically significant PDA is

Carotid Arterial Compliance and Aerobic Exercise Training in Chronic Traumatic Brain Injury: A Pilot Study.

OBJECTIVE: Decreased carotid arterial compliance (CAC) is associated with cerebral microvascular damage, cerebral blood flow (CBF) dysregulation, and increased risk for stroke and dementia, which are reported to be prevalent after traumatic brain injury (TBI). However, the effect of TBI on CAC has not been reported. The purposes of this pilot study were to (1) compare CAC between participants with chronic traumatic brain injury (cTBI) and age-matched healthy control (HC) subjects and (2) to examine whether CAC changed after 3 months of exercise training in those with cTBI. SETTING: Community

Impact of serum erythropoietin level on collateral vessel development in patients with coronary artery disease.

OBJECTIVE: Experimental data have shown that Erythropoietin (EPO) stimulates angiogenesis and neovascularization which may result in improved collateral development. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between serum EPO levels and the extent of coronary collaterals. Patient characteristics possibly related with coronary collaterals were also sought. METHODS: A total of 256 patients with high grade coronary stenosis or occlusion were evaluated for the extent of coronary collaterals using Rentrop classification. Patients with grade 0 or 1 collaterals were grouped as poor co

Comparison of bovine cysticercosis prevalence detected by antigen ELISA and visual inspection in the North East of Spain.

A cross-sectional serological study on cattle less than 2 years old, using an antigen ELISA for the detection of bovine cysticercosis was carried out between November 2009 and February 2010 in 10 slaughterhouses from the Catalonia region (North-Eastern Spain). Circulating antigen was detected in 23 of 2073 animals, i.e. a sero-prevalence of 1.11% (CI95%: 0.76-1.75%). The determined sero-prevalence was about 50 times higher than the prevalence obtained by visual inspection within the same period: 19 positive animals of 90,891 slaughtered animals (0.02%) in the same slaughterhouses. None of the

Anteriorly placed splenic vein: the first reported case.

Surgical treatment of portal hypertension is undertaken to reduce the portal pressure to a level that allows recession of the collateral circulation. For this purpose, surgeons usually carry out anastomosis of the splenic vein with the left renal vein. The splenic vein is a large, nontortuous vessel that runs along the posterior surface of the pancreas but very rarely crosses in front of the gland. It is therefore important that a thorough preoperative study of the anatomical details of the spleno-portal venous axis be made by imaging before attempting surgery. We are presenting herewith the s

The effects of acute ketone monoester supplementation on brain insulin responsiveness and cognitive performance: Results of a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover trial in older men with overweight.

INTRODUCTION: Nutritional ketosis may prevent age-related cognitive decline, but underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This study investigated acute ketone monoester (KME) supplementation on brain insulin responsiveness and cognitive performance in older men with overweight. METHODS: In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover trial, 18 men (age: 70.2 ± 3.5 years, BMI: 27.2 ± 1.5 kg/m2) consumed KME (395 mg/kg body weight) or a taste-matched placebo. Brain insulin responsiveness (primary outcome) was assessed using pseudo-continuous arterial spin labeling (pCASL)-MRI by measur

Circulating miR-326 and miR-532-3p: novel biomarkers for early gestational diabetes mellitus detection with high diagnostic accuracy.

PURPOSE: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) significantly threatens maternal and fetal health, necessitating early and accurate diagnostic tools. This study aimed to identify and validate circulating microRNAs (miRNAs) as novel biomarkers for GDM. METHODS: A two-phase cross-sectional study enrolled 55 GDM patients and 55 matched healthy pregnant controls. In the discovery phase, RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) of peripheral blood RNA from a randomly selected subset (5 GDM patients, 5 controls) identified differentially expressed miRNAs. The validation phase employed reverse transcription and quanti

Chest Compressions Synchronized to Native Cardiac Contractions are More Effective than Unsynchronized Compressions for Improving Coronary Perfusion Pressure in a Novel Pseudo-PEA Swine Model.

OBJECTIVES: Pulseless electrical activity (PEA) arrest, which includes pseudo-PEA, is increasingly common and survival remains dismal. We hypothesized that mechanical chest compressions synchronized to native cardiac contractions improve coronary perfusion pressure (CPP) during pseudo-PEA resuscitation. METHODS: We developed a model of pseudo-PEA by infusing high dose esmolol intravenously into anesthetized, intubated, and central arterial and venous catheterized swine to a goal of 45 mm Hg mean arterial blood pressure (MAP). We performed a randomized unblinded repeated crossover trial by adm

Carotid sinus baroafferent signals contribute to cerebral blood flow regulation during acute hypotension in young males: A randomized crossover study.

Cerebral autoregulation is an important factor in prevention of cerebral ischemic events. We tested a traditional but unproven hypothesis that carotid sinus baroafferent signals contribute to dynamic cerebral autoregulation. Middle cerebral artery mean blood velocity (MCA Vmean ) responses to thigh-cuff deflation-induced acute hypotension were compared between conditions using neck suction soon after cuff deflation, without or with a cushion wrapped around the upper neck, in nine healthy males (aged 25 ± 5 years). Neck suction was applied close to the hypotension. The MCA Vmean response was ex

The impact of sleep restriction on cerebrovascular reactivity and cognitive outcomes in healthy adolescents: A pilot crossover trial.

BACKGROUND: The underlying mechanism for the association between sleep restriction (SR) and unfavorable cognitive outcomes in children and adolescents remains unclear. This study aimed to understand the effect of 5-night experimental SR on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) measurements of cerebrovascular reactivity (CVR) and cognitive function in adolescents. METHODS: This randomized crossover study compared two sleep conditions, SR and Control Sleep (CS) in a home setting. Healthy adolescents aged 15-18 years were recruited. The protocol began with two nights of baseline sleep to record parti

Systemic and Cerebral Hemodynamic Contribution to Cognitive Performance in Spinal Cord Injury.

Cognitive deficits are prevalent in the spinal cord injury (SCI) population, and consensus suggests that concomitant traumatic brain injury or comorbid conditions are primarily responsible for these deficits. However, mounting evidence supports the possibility that systemic and cerebral hemodynamic dysfunction may contribute to the cognitive deficits reported in persons with SCI. We sought to determine the contribution of changes in blood pressure (BP) and changes in cerebral blood flow velocity (CBFv) to test performance on the Symbol Digit Modalities Test (SDMT) in persons with SCI compared

Regional brain perfusion changes during standard and microburst vagus nerve stimulation in dogs.

PURPOSE: Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) is an effective adjunctive treatment for refractory epilepsy in humans, but its mechanism of action (MOA) and optimal stimulation parameters are still unknown. Functional neuroimaging studies could provide better insight into the brain structures involved in the activity of VNS, but have not yet been described in dogs. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of acute VNS on the regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) in dogs using micro-SPECT (μ-SPECT). Additionally, a novel stimulation paradigm (microburst VNS) was used and compared with standard
