We report a case of recurrent multiple bursitis (19 episodes at nine sites) requiring seven surgical procedures in a European women with a 38-year history of severe, nodular, destructive seropositive rheumatoid arthritis unresponsive to second-line drugs. The episodes of bursitis were not correlated with activity of the joint disease. Some cysts migrated over a considerable distance. At least two cysts contained chylous fluid. The histologic study of one cyst demonstrated a cholesterol crystal granuloma. Potential relationships linking cholesterol crystals, chylous cysts, and migrating multipl

Synovial osteochondromatosis is a rare benign pathology arising from the synovial membrane of the joints, synovial sheaths or uncommonly the bursae around the joints. Baker's cysts are fluid filled, synovium-lined lesions arising in popliteal fossa. Synovial chondromatosis involving the Baker`s cyst is extremely rare. The aim of this case report is to document this exceedingly rare extra articular synovial pathology involving Baker's cysts of bilateral knees and to emphasize the importance of radiographs and sonography in the diagnosis.

Cystoperitoneal shunt and ventriculoperitoneal shunt are commonly used cerebrospinal fluid diversion procedures in neurosurgery. Although generally effective, these procedures are associated with several complications, including shunt migration. Transanal extrusion of the distal catheter after shunt migration is a rare but potentially serious complication, reported in approximately 0.1%-0.7% of shunt procedures, and is usually associated with bowel perforation and a risk of retrograde central nervous system infection. We report the case of a seven-month-old child who developed transanal extrus

Cysticercosis is a major cause of economic loss in bovine production due to meat condemnation. Chemotherapy is being used in Brazilian cattle and a diagnostic test to improve the treatment program is desired. We produced monoclonal antibodies against crude (TAEB) and cyst fluid (TAEF) Taenia saginata metacestode antigens using immunized BALB/c mice. After cell fusion, 10 TAEB and nine TAEF hybrids were selected and cloned resulting in 18 IgG(1) and 32 IgM TAEB clones, and 9 IgG(1) and 9 IgM TAEF clones. Ascites was produced and Western blot testing was performed resulting in reactivity to prot…

Simple renal cysts are the most common masses in the kidney. Most are asymptomatic and are incidentally detected on imaging examinations performed for other reasons. This study aimed to compare the results of 40 and 120 minutes ethanol sclerotherapies that were performed in a single session to treat incidentally found simple renal cysts. We retrospectively reviewed 63 renal cysts in 62 patients treated by single session percutaneous ethanol sclerotherapy. Thirty-one patients with 32 cysts underwent a 40 minutes sclerotherapy (group A), and 31 patients with 31 cysts underwent a 120 minutes rete

BACKGROUND/AIMS: In the past, various treatments for symptomatic hepatic cysts have been reported. In recent years, sclerosis therapy seems to be most common. In the present study, repeated instillation of a limited volume of ethanol was evaluated.
METHODOLOGY: Six patients who had one or more hepatic cysts underwent percutaneous alcohol sclerosis therapy. Of the six patients, five had epigastric discomfort, and one had back pain. A 7.0-French pigtail polyethylene catheter was inserted into the cyst. The fluid was aspirated and it was demonstrated by radiograph that there were no communicatio

We report a case of inferior vena cava (IVC) thrombosis caused by compression by a giant liver cyst. A 68-year-old man with a 1-day history of abdominal pain was referred to another hospital. Ultrasonography (US) and enhanced computed tomography (CT) showed a multilobular cyst on the right liver lobe that had increased to 300 mm in diameter from 90 mm 18 months earlier. Thrombosis was detected in the IVC, which was compressed by the cyst. Percutaneous transhepatic cyst drainage achieved no significant change in size. Cytological analysis from the percutaneous drainage tube fluid showed no evid

STUDY DESIGN: A case report.
OBJECTIVES: To illustrate a rare case of histologically confirmed solitary bone cyst involving the spinous process of C7.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: A solitary bone cyst involving the spine is very unusual. Although four cases of a solitary bone cyst in the spine have been reported in the literature, the current authors have been able to find only one case of solitary bone cyst in the spinous process. All four patients reported in the literature were over 30 years of age. The patient in the current case was a 13-year-old girl with no history of trauma.

A total of 1,204 patients with liver hydatidosis were treated by operations in our hospital from 1953 to 1990. Of these 74 had biliary fistulae. Growth of echinococcus cyst causes displacement, distortion and stenosis of the hepatic ductules with impaired bile drainage. Biliary effusion may occur between the endo- and ecto-cyst walls. Long term compression renders the hepatic ductule atrophic, and liable to rupture, forming a hydatid cyst-biliary fistula. The hydatid cyst can rupture into the biliary tract, and cyst fluid escapes into the biliary tract with daughter cysts discharged into the c…

We present a rare case of endometriosis of the cervix. Transvaginal sonography showed a 35-mm cyst in the cervix with diffuse, low-level internal echoes. Transvaginal sonography-guided aspiration with a 17-gauge needle was performed, yielding a very thick chocolate-colored fluid. Cytological examination of the fluid revealed the presence of endometrial cells. Symptoms resolved after aspiration and no recurrence has developed.

Chylous Mesenteric Cyst is an uncommon benign abdominal cyst that can arise anywhere along the mesentery of the gastrointestinal tract, from the duodenum to the rectum. It is often asymptomatic but can rarely present with abdominal discomfort or a palpable abdominal mass. Final diagnosis typically relies on histopathology examination following laparoscopic or open excision. We present a 54 years old male who initially presented with right lower abdominal discomfort and lump. Computed Tomography (CT) demonstrated a large thin walled cystic lesion abutting and displacing the right ureter. Pre-op

An acromioclavicular joint cyst is an uncommonly reported condition, which seems to result from a massive rotator cuff tear and degenerative osteoarthritis of the acromioclavicular joint. We present the case of an 81-year-old man affected by an acromioclavicular joint cyst, associated to a massive rotator cuff tear, proximal migration of the humeral head and osteoarthritis of the gleno-humeral joint. The mass was 7 x 2.5 cm in size and the overlying skin presented a fistula that drained clear synovial-like fluid. Plain X-ray examination of the left shoulder showed proximal migration of the hum

A 4-year old, male intact, captive-bred chinchilla (Chinchilla lanigera) was presented due to progressive exophthalmos of the right eye over a 5-month period. Ophthalmic examination revealed exophthalmos with dorsal displacement of the right globe. Retropulsion was decreased and a fluctuant, subcutaneous mass could be palpated posterior and dorsal to the central aspect of the zygomatic bone. Transdermal ultrasonography revealed a fluid-filled mass consistent with a cyst located within the ventral right orbit. Computed tomography demonstrated dorsal displacement of the globe, lateral displaceme

Synovial cysts are well-defined fluid filled cysts that can extend for a variable distance outside the joint space. These cysts can sometimes grow to a large size making its treatment challenging especially when associated with intra-articular pathologies. We describe a case of giant synovial cyst arising from the left knee and extending to the medial proximal calf in a 77-year old female who presented with knee joint pain, episodes of locking and calf mass occurring within 2 months of onset. Imaging studies also showed associated medial and lateral meniscal tears with medial compartment and p

A mediastinal tumor mass in a 53-year-old woman with the sole complaint of persistent cough was studied and found to be a true thymic hyperplasia associated with a unilocular thymic cyst, felt to be of the congenital type. The bilobed thymus obtained was macroscopically and microscopically normal except for the size (12 x 12 x 3.5 cm) and weight (97 g). It showed normal thymic tissue segregated in lobules separated by adipose septa and with good corticomedullary separation. There were numerous Hassall corpuscles in the medullary portion. The thymus-to-adipose ratio was approximately 80:20. In

In the setting of femoroacetabular impingement of the hip joint, paralabral cysts are well-documented sequelae. These cysts are typically associated with labral tears caused by CAM and/or pincer-type bony lesions. Synovial fluid extravasation through a tear in the labrum, similar to a popliteus cyst, leads to formation of a capsular-based cyst that is usually self-limiting. Few documented cases of these cysts causing compression of nearby neurovascular structures exist. There are several studies documenting arthroscopic decompression of these cysts, but none reporting compression of the femora

Pericardial cysts are rare mediastinal cysts composed of a single fluid-filled mesothelial layer and can be congenital in origin or develop secondary to pericarditis, trauma, or infection. Although most pericardial cysts are asymptomatic, life-threatening complications can occasionally occur. We report on a 57-year-old man with an asymptomatic 9 cm pericardial cyst that was incidentally found as an abnormal cardiac silhouette on routine chest radiography. Further imaging confirmed the presence of a pericardial cyst that was compressing the right atrium. The patient underwent successful video-a

Non-neoplastic intracranial cysts (NICCs) are usually stable and typically do not cause symptoms throughout life. Among the various NICCs, rare spontaneous disappearances of arachnoid cysts, colloid cysts, and Rathke?s cleft cysts in various locations have been reported. To our knowledge, no reports to date have described spontaneous disappearance of choroid plexus cysts (CPCs). We here report the first case of spontaneous bilateral disappearance of CPCs. Although the exact pathogenic mechanisms remain unclear, we believe that a sudden transient change in intracranial pressure or cerebrospinal

Dentigerous cysts are benign maxillary odontogenic cysts associated with the crown of an unerupted tooth. They can expand the cortical bone to such an extent that they cause displacement of teeth and root resorption in the adjacent teeth. The purpose of this report was to describe the clinical case of a dentigerous cyst in a mandibular permanent molar of a 6-year-old child. The cyst caused the displacement of the bud of the permanent second molar and root resorption of the primary second molar. The cyst was treated by: (1) mucous fenestration using an erbium laser: (2) drainage of the fluid co
