Prospective associations between couples' childbirth-related posttraumatic stress and their postpartum sexual well-being.

BACKGROUND: New parents' postpartum sexual satisfaction and function is often disrupted. Poor postpartum mental health, such as symptoms of childbirth-related posttraumatic stress disorder (CB-PTSD), may increase the risk of experiencing sexual difficulties. AIM: To investigate the prospective association between mothers'/birthing parents' and fathers'/non-birthing parents' CB-PTSD symptoms at 8 weeks postpartum and their own and their partners' overall sexual satisfaction and postpartum-specific sexual function at 6 months postpartum. METHODS: We used data from 344 couples, who were mostly

Bad times make mothers depressed.

This research conducts the first comprehensive analysis of how prenatal economic fluctuations affect postpartum depression and documents its counter-cyclicality. Using population-based claims data, we examine outpatient utilization related to mental disorders among women in Taiwan during the six-month, nine-month, and one-year postpartum periods from 1998 to 2012. The results indicate that medical utilization for postpartum depression within the six-month and nine-month postpartum periods is influenced by economic conditions during the second trimester of pregnancy. This study also aims to und

Maternal mental health in the first year postpartum in a large Irish population cohort: the MAMMI study.

PURPOSE: The international perinatal literature focuses on depression in the postpartum period. Prevalence and pathways of depression, anxiety and stress from pregnancy through the first postpartum year are seldom investigated. METHODS: MAMMI is a prospective cohort study of 3009 first-time mothers recruited in pregnancy. Depressive, anxiety and stress symptoms measured using the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS 21) in pregnancy and at 3-, 6-, 9- and/or 12-months postpartum. RESULTS: Prevalence of depressive and stress symptoms was lowest in pregnancy, increasing to 12-months postp

Perinatal Depression and Anxiety in Women with and without Human Immunodeficiency Virus Infection.

BACKGROUND: Untreated depression and anxiety during the perinatal period have significant consequences on maternal and infant health; however, few studies have examined perinatal depression and perinatal anxiety in women with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. The current study prospectively examined the prevalence of prenatal and postpartum depression and anxiety, and emotional support from family and friends, as well as childhood sexual abuse in women with and without HIV infection. METHODS: Between July 2009 and January 2013, 258 pregnant women receiving care in a Philadelphia h

Maternal history of child maltreatment and maternal depression risk in the perinatal period: A longitudinal study.

Existing research is limited, with only a few studies considering each single type and multiple types of child maltreatment (CM) as well as multiple assessments of maternal depression throughout the perinatal period. The purpose of the study was to assess each type and accumulative types of CM in relation to the risk of maternal depression throughout the perinatal period. In total, 276 pregnant women were recruited from the prenatal clinic at a general hospital in China. Maternal CM history and depression risk were assessed at late pregnancy, postpartum week 1, and postpartum week 4 using the

Differences in Treating Tobacco Use Across National, State, and Public Hospital System Surveys.

INTRODUCTION: Postpartum depression is a serious public health problem that can adversely impact mother-child interactions. Few studies have examined depressive symptoms in the later (9-10 months) postpartum period. METHODS: We analyzed data from the 2019 Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS) linked with data from a telephone follow-up survey administered to PRAMS respondents 9 to 10 months postpartum in 7 states (N = 1,954). We estimated the prevalence of postpartum depressive symptoms (PDS) at 9 to 10 months overall and by sociodemographic characteristics, prior depression (be

Elevated brain monoamine oxidase A binding in the early postpartum period.

CONTEXT: The early postpartum period is a time of high risk for a major depressive episode (or postpartum depression), with a prevalence of 13%. During this time, there is a heightened vulnerability for low mood because postpartum blues is common. Severe postpartum blues can herald the onset of postpartum depression. The neurobiological mechanisms to explain postpartum blues and the high risk for the onset of postpartum depression in the first few weeks after delivery are unclear. Estrogen levels drop 100- to 1000-fold during the first 3 to 4 days postpartum, and changes in estrogen levels hav

Risk factors associated with the development of postpartum mood disorders.

BACKGROUND: Various factors have been reported to be associated with the development of postpartum mood disorders. The relationship between postpartum mood disorders and putatively hormone-related phenomena such as premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) is unclear. This study attempts to determine whether such mood phenomena are risk factors for postpartum mood disorders. METHODS: Postpartum women (n=1800) were assessed for risk factors for postpartum mood disorders during the first 2-4 days after parturition. Of these, 133 were defined as "high risk" and 109 as "low risk" according to fixed

Profiling intimate partner violence in booked pregnant women at Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital Abakaliki and associated puerperal depressive sequelae: a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Intimate partner violence (IPV) in pregnancy is a physical, sexual, psychological or economic harm by a current or former partner or spouse on a pregnant woman. It is a global public health problem that is common but underreported. Women are at increased risk of psychiatric illness in pregnancy and after delivery with the risk of major depressive disorder being highest during the postpartum period. Intimate partner violence in pregnancy may worsen this problem. OBJECTIVES: The objectives of the study were to determine the prevalence of intimate partner violence (IPV) in pregnancy,

Postpartum intimate partner violence and health risks among young mothers in the United States: a prospective study.

The study assessed the relationship between postpartum intimate partner violence (IPV) and postpartum health risks among young mothers over time. Data were collected from 2001 to 2005 on young women aged 14-25 attending obstetrics and gynecology clinics in two US cities. Postpartum IPV (i.e., emotional, physical, sexual) was assessed at 6 and 12 months after childbirth (n = 734). Four types of postpartum IPV patterns were examined: emerged IPV, dissipated IPV, repeated IPV, and no IPV. Emerged IPV occurred at 12 months postpartum, not 6 months postpartum. Dissipated IPV occurred at 6 months po

Thyroid peroxidase autoantibodies and perinatal depression risk: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: While thyroid autoantibodies have been linked to depression in general population samples, it is unclear if the immunological milieu of pregnancy alters this association. As a result, we systematically reviewed the literature to determine if abnormal levels of autoantibodies that target thyroperoxidase (TPO-AB) during the perinatal period are associated with an increased risk of antenatal and postnatal depression. METHODS: MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsycINFO, and CINAHL databases were searched through February 2016. Primary studies that examined TPO-AB titers during pregnancy or the postpar

Psychological Flexibility and Depression in New Mothers of Medically Vulnerable Infants: A Mediational Analysis.

Objectives Maternal depression in the postpartum period is prevalent and associated with negative child outcomes, including behavior problems and cognitive delays. Mothers of children admitted directly after birth to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) are at even higher risk for depressive symptoms and infants born premature and/or at low birth weight may be more vulnerable to the adverse effects of maternal depression. Understanding mechanisms, particularly modifiable mechanisms, involved in the development or persistence of depressive symptoms is critically important for developing effe

Associations of postpartum mother-infant bonding with maternal childhood maltreatment and postpartum mental health: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: After delivery, some women experience impairment of their mother-infant bonding (MIB), which can lead to long-term disturbances of the mother-child relationship and the child's social-emotional development. Little is known about the association between early maternal bonding problems and mothers' own adverse childhood experiences, even though the hypothesis of the intergenerational transmission of caregiving indicates continuity in parenting quality across generations. Therefore, the current study aimed at examining the relationship between maternal childhood maltreatment and postp

A randomized controlled pilot study of the effectiveness of magnolia tea on alleviating depression in postnatal women.

The magnolia tea has been used in traditional oriental medicine for multiple purposes including sleep aid. Postpartum depression is a mental illness that adversely affects the health and well-being of many families with newborns. Given the known effectiveness and relative safety, herein we aimed to investigate whether magnolia tea has a palliative effect on postpartum depression. The qualified participants were randomly assigned to the intervention group or the control group. The participants in the intervention group drunk magnolia tea, while the control group received regular postpartum care

Be vigilant for perinatal mental health problems.

The postnatal period appears to be associated with higher rates of adjustment disorder, generalised anxiety disorder, and depression. Women who have a history of serious mental illness are at higher risk of developing a postpartum relapse, even if they have been well during pregnancy. Psychiatric causes of maternal death are more common than some direct causes of death. UK rates increased from 13/100,000 in 2006-2008 to 16/100,000 in 2010-2012, higher than, for example, mortality caused by haemorrhage or anaesthetic complications of childbirth. Postnatal depression is more severe than baby blu
