In vitro degradation and permeation testing of glove materials is important in the assessment of the protective efficacy against chemicals. In vivo factors, such as skin-glove contact, skin temperature and humidity may, however, influence the protective effect of the glove. These factors must thus be considered in the overall assessment of a protective glove. An in vivo glove test should as far as possible imitate the practical use of the glove, as well as the exposure to the product/chemical against which the glove should protect. An open chamber system for human in vivo glove testing is pres

Patients with atopy and especially these with atopic skin diseases, hand eczema and dishidrosis have been identified as a high-risk group developing irritant hand dermatitis. To improve prevention pre-occupational examinations (screening tests) in youth have been proposed. Dermatological examinations, questionnaires and some bioengineering techniques are usually suggested. The necessity of application of ASD score has been confirmed. Because of the high irritant hand eczema morbility and socio-economic consequences detection of high-risk group plays a special role. It is possible by means of:

Patch tests with 24 Compositae species were performed on 81 patients suspected of having a plant dermatitis, of whom 16 had positive reactions to various species. When Compositae were included in the standard series, 10 of 488 consecutive patients (2%) were found to be sensitive to one or more species. Most of the positive test reactions were relevant. Fourteen of 16 sensitivities could have been detected by testing with two mixtures of Compositae. Alantolactone could not serve as a screening agent, since four of seven Compositae-sensitive patients had negative reactions to it. Concomitant rea

INTRODUCTION: Turpentine is an oleoresin obtained from various species of pine. It contains a volatile oil (oil of turpentine) which is responsible for its properties and this is the form generally used. Opportunity for contact with turpentine is widespread. It is universally used as a solvent to dissolve and thin lacquers, varnishes and paints. It is also an ingredient in many liniments and cold remedies. Turpentine is regarded as both a local irritant and a sensitizer. Cases of allergic contact dermatitis in painters, mechanics, shoe repairers and home decorators have been reported.

In order to identify the etiopathogenesis of cutaneous diseases in housewives, a questionnaire was made, and the gathered data are here described. 1,824 people have answered this questionnaire: 1,007 have reported lesions with a suspicious immunological pathogenesis. The commercial products which were reported as a cause of the dermatitis have been 834. In a group of 142 housewives (86 with allergic contact dermatitis and 56 with irritative contact dermatitis), the allergic sensitizations to the chemicals in the detergents were tested. 21% of the cases had positive cutaneous reactions for nick

BACKGROUND: Hairdressing chemicals may be associated with allergic contact dermatitis.
OBJECTIVE: To review our experience of patch-testing with hairdressing chemicals.
METHODS: We reviewed results from patients who underwent patch testing with our standard allergen series (including 15 hairdressing chemicals) and a supplementary "hairdresser series" (18 additional hairdressing chemicals) at Mayo Clinic (Rochester, MN; Scottsdale, AZ; and Jacksonville, FL) from January 1, 2000, through December 31, 2008.
RESULTS: Two hundred ten patients (mean age, 53.8 years [SD, 16.9 yr]; female, 94.8%) w

BACKGROUND: Propylene glycol (PG) may cause allergic or irritant contact dermatitis. It primarily functions as a vehicle, solvent, or emulsifier in cosmetics and topical medications.
OBJECTIVES: To characterize the prevalence of positive patch-test reactions to PG and the epidemiology of affected patients.
METHODS: Retrospective analysis of cross-sectional data compiled by the North American Contact Dermatitis Group (NACDG) from 1996 to 2006.
RESULTS: Of 23,359 patients, 810 (3.5%) had allergic patch-test reactions to 30% PG; 12.8% of the reactions were of definite clinical relevance (posit

Acrylic resin monomers, especially acrylates and methacrylates, are well-known sensitizers responsible for allergic contact dermatitis mainly in the occupational setting. The most frequently affected professionals are dentists, orthopedic surgeons, manicurists, painting industry and fiberglass workers. The authors report the case of a 39-year-old healthy woman, a secretary, who developed severe onychodystrophy of all fingers, 1 week after the application of sculptured acrylic nails.

BACKGROUND: Occupational contact dermatitis (OCD) is a prevalent work-related skin condition among nurses and remains a significant occupational health issue due to its impact on well-being, productivity, and workforce sustainability. However, reliable tools for early risk stratification in this population are lacking. This study aimed to develop and validate a nomogram-based prediction model to estimate the individual risk of OCD among nurses.
METHODS: A multicenter cross-sectional survey was conducted among 2,852 nurses from 40 hospitals across China. Participants were randomly assigned to

CONCLUSIONS: Three workers experienced contact dermatitis, occupational asthma, severe neurological sequelae, as well as new-onset obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome after occupational exposure to diisopropylcarbodiimide. Irritant contact dermatitis (ICD) is common and poses a significant problem in high-risk populations. In most cases, ICD resolves despite continued exposure in a process known as 'hardening', allowing individuals to continue with their work. Those who cannot clear ICD develop chronic ICD, which is a significant source of emotional, physical, and financial distress for affected individuals. While hardening is well known among labourers and clinicians, its mechanism remains to be elucidated. Much can be learned from the study of self-healing processes like the hardening phenomenon. This overview

We report a case of an industrial homeworker diagnosed with allergic contact dermatitis by UV-curing acrylic resin for crafts. Approximately 2 months after a female in her 40s started producing handicrafts using resin, itchy desquamative erythema and vesicles occurred on her eyelids and palms. The course of the symptoms suggested that her dermatitis was occupational origin. Interviews regarding the work environment indicated that her employer did not adequately explain the hazards of resin. An inappropriate work environment may have led to the development of allergy. For industrial homeworkers
