Epidemiology of osteoporotic fracture in Moldova and development of a country-specific FRAX model.

UNLABELLED: Retrospective population-based survey in 2 regions of the Republic of Moldova determined the incidence of fractures at the hip, proximal humerus and distal forearm. The estimated number of such fractures nationwide for 2015 was 11,271 and is predicted to increase to 15,863 in 2050. The hip fracture rates were used to create a FRAX model to help guide decisions about treatment. OBJECTIVE: This paper describes the epidemiology of osteoporotic fractures in Republic of Moldova that was used to develop the country-specific fracture prediction FRAX® tool. METHODS: We carried out a retr

Impacts of social inequalities on the survival of heart transplant recipients in a developing country.

BACKGROUND: Heart transplant (HT) is an alternative for patients with advanced heart failure (HF). Social inequalities may influence survival, but are still not well understood. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of social and clinical inequalities on the survival of HT recipients. METHODS: Retrospective cohort study conducted at a Brazilian hospital from 2006 to 2018. RESULTS: Three hundred and two patients were analyzed. Most HT recipients were male (205, 67.9%), mixed race 146 (48.3%), retired (166, 56.5%), median age 47 (38-57) years, and had studied no more than eight years

Total hip arthroplasty in sickle cell disease patients in a developing country.

BACKGROUND: Osteoarthritis secondary to osteonecrosis of the femoral head is a common presentation in patients with sickle cell disease. Functional limitations with or without deformities from these complications of sickle cell disease often require Total Hip Arthroplasty (THA) to improve outcome. AIM: The aim of this study was to evaluate the postoperative outcome of THA for secondary osteoarthritis from osteonecrosis of the head of the femur in patients with sickle cell disease. Methodology: A retrospective study of outcome of THA in sickle cell disease patients between January 2010 and Dec

Health Care-Associated Infections in a Neurocritical Care Unit of a Developing Country.

BACKGROUND: Health care-associated infections (HAIs) in intensive care units (ICUs) specialized for neurocritical care (neurocritical care units [NCCUs]) are serious yet preventable complications that contribute significantly to morbidity and mortality worldwide. However, reliable data are scarcely available from the developing world. We aimed to analyze the incidence, epidemiology, microbial etiology, and outcomes of HAIs in an NCCU of a tertiary care teaching hospital in a high-income, developing country. METHODS: In this 3-year retrospective cohort study, all patients admitted to the NCCU

AIM: To examine the epidemiological trends of infective endocarditis in a developing nation. METHODS: Single-centre, retrospective study of patients admitted with IE to a tertiary hospital in Malaysia over a 12-year period. RESULTS: The analysis included 182 patients (n = 153 Duke's definite IE, n = 29 possible IE). The mean age was 51 years. Rheumatic heart disease was present in 42%, while 7.6% were…

Profile and outcome of burn injuries amongst preschool children in a developing country.

The aim of this study was to investigate characteristics, outcomes and risk factors for death from burn in preschool children. A retrospective study was conducted on 3688 preschool burn children admitted to the National Burn Hospital from 1/1/2016 to 31/12/2018. Collected data included patient demographics and burn characteristics. Bivariate and multivariate analysis was conducted to determine independent risk factors for death. Results showed that preschool children accounted for 78.8% of total admitted burn children. The main causal agent was scald. Boys were predominant, and 76.5% patients

Intrahepatic Portosystemic Shunt in a Young Female: Views from a Developing Country.

A young female presented to us with abdominal distension along with pedal edema. She had no prior medical or surgical history apart from a caesarean section done a few years prior. Initial workup showed low hemoglobin, low serum albumin and slight raised ESR. Her LFTs were slightly deranged. Ultrasound abdomen had evidence of portal hypertension along with splenomegaly. While ultrasound hepatic Doppler revealed a portosystemic shunt between the portal vein and the left hepatic vein, with a shunt ratio of 7.1%. CT scan abdomen confirmed these findings and a diagnosis of Type III intrahepatic po

Complementary Feeding in Developed Countries: The 3 Ws (When, What, and Why?).

While a wide knowledge exists on the effects of breast milk or infant formula on growth and infant development, less attention has been paid to the importance of complementary feeding (CF). This review focuses on current recommendations for optimal introduction of CF in healthy full-term European infants and discusses the potential impact of this type of feeding on health outcomes. Overall, exclusive breastfeeding is recommended at least for 4 months and preferable for 6 months, followed by the introduction of CF alongside breast milk; infants' nutrient requirements must meet the differences b

Furthermore, the results of the Point-In-Time (PIT) count of homeless people-a measure of the number of homeless people on a specific day-done in the city of León, Nicaragua (population: 185,000).
