Dietary Interventions for Cancer Prevention: An Update to ACS International Guidelines.

Cancer, the second leading cause of death worldwide, demands the identification of modifiable risk factors to optimize its prevention. Diet has emerged as a pivotal focus in current research efforts. This literature review aims to enhance the ACS guidelines on diet and cancer by integrating the latest findings and addressing unresolved questions. The methodology involved an advanced PubMed search with specific filters relevant to the research topic. Topics covered include time-restricted diet, diet quality, acid load, counseling, exercise and diet combination, Mediterranean diet, vegetarian an

Exercise training and/or diet on reduction of intra-abdominal adipose tissue and risk factors for cardiovascular disease.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: To test the effects of weight loss with and without exercise training (aerobic or resistance) on intra-abdominal adipose tissue (IAAT) and risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD). Additionally, CVD risk factors was evaluated before and after weight loss using previously established IAAT cut-points. SUBJECTS/METHODS: One hundred twenty-two overweight premenopausal women were randomly assigned to one of three groups: (1) diet only (Diet); (2) diet and aerobic training (Diet + AT); or (3) diet and resistance training (Diet + RT); until a BMI of < 25 kg/m2 was reached

Age, Action Orientation, and Self-Regulation during the Pursuit of a Dieting Goal.

Two studies tested the hypotheses that (1) action orientation (vs. state orientation) is positively correlated with age across adulthood and (2) action orientation aids the self-regulation of one's feelings, thoughts, and behavior during the pursuit of a dieting goal. Hypotheses were partly confirmed. In Study 1, N = 126 overweight women (age: 19-77 years) intended to lose weight by means of a low-calorie diet. In Study 2, N = 322 adults (age: 18-82 years) reported on their action orientation to replicate the association of age and action orientation found in Study 1. Study 2 corroborated only

Effective strategies for weight loss in post-partum women: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Post-partum weight loss is critical to preventing and managing obesity in women, but the results from lifestyle interventions are variable and the components associated with successful outcomes are not yet clearly identified. This study aimed to identify lifestyle intervention strategies associated with weight loss in post-partum women. MEDLINE, EMBASE, PubMed, CINAHL and four other databases were searched for lifestyle intervention studies (diet or exercise or both) in post-partum women (within 12 months of delivery) published up to July 2014. The primary outcome was weight loss. Subgroup ana

Circuits controlling energy balance and mood: inherently intertwined or just complicated intersections?

Recent reports of adverse psychiatric events from seemingly different types of weight loss therapies highlight a previously underestimated overlap between CNS circuits that control energy balance and those that regulate mood. In this Perspective, we discuss a few potential brain sites where the homeostatic and the hedonic pathways may intersect and suggest that a better understanding of both pathways is necessary for the development of more effective and safer antiobesity therapies.

Are adolescent weight-related problems and general well-being essentially an issue of age, gender or rather a pubertal timing issue?

OBJECTIVE: To compare the characteristics of a set of weight-related and well-being variables among adolescents according to gender and age. It was hypothesised that time of puberty, not age in itself, might be the turning point for gender dissimilarities. METHODS: Data were drawn from the Portuguese 2006 HBSC/WHO database and were disaggregated by gender and age group. Groups were compared for dieting, body image, health perception and happiness variables on the bivariate level using cross-tabulations. Separate analysis of the dependent variables was further conducted for 11-year-olds compar

Regimented and lifestyle restraint in binge eating disorder.

OBJECTIVE: This study tested the psychometric properties of two commonly used measures of dietary restraint, the Three Factor Eating Questionnaire and the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire. METHOD: Restraint data from 512 overweight/obese participants with binge eating disorder (BED) were subjected to exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses. RESULTS: Factor analyses of the restraint variables indicated a two-factor solution, interpreted as "Regimented" and "Lifestyle" restraint. Stepwise regression analyses revealed that Regimented restraint was more predictive of eating patholo

Are dietary restraint scales valid measures of dietary restriction? Additional objective behavioral and biological data suggest not.

Prospective studies find that individuals with elevated dietary restraint scores are at increased risk for bulimic symptom onset, yet experiments find that assignment to energy-deficit diet interventions reduce bulimic symptoms. One explanation for the conflicting findings is that the dietary restraint scales used in the former studies do not actually identify individuals who are restraining their caloric intake. Thus, we tested whether dietary restraint scales showed inverse relations to objectively measured caloric intake in three studies. Four dietary restraint scales did not correlate with

Abdominal visceral fat reduction is associated with favorable changes of serum retinol binding protein-4 in nondiabetic subjects.

The adipocytokine retinol binding protein-4 (RBP4) has recently been shown to link obesity and insulin resistance, although their relationship remains controversial in human studies. The influence of weight reduction with changes of fat distribution on serum RBP4 concentration in nondiabetics is also unknown. We assessed the effect of weight reduction (especially abdominal visceral fat loss) on serum RBP4 levels after a structuralized weight-reduction program. We conducted a prospective intervention study consisting of a 16-week weight reduction program, including lifestyle modification and ad

Sibutramine plus meal replacement therapy for body weight loss and maintenance in obese patients.

OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to assess the efficacy and safety of sibutramine with a low-calorie diet (LCD) and commercial meal-replacement product in achieving weight loss and weight-loss maintenance in obese patients. RESEARCH METHODS AND PROCEDURES: Eight U.S. centers recruited 148 obese patients for a 3-month comprehensive weight-loss therapy (Phase I) comprising daily sibutramine 10 mg + LCD (two Slim-Fast meal-replacement shakes, one low-calorie meal; total kcal/d = 1200-1500). Patients (N = 113) who lost > or =5% of initial body weight during Phase I were randomized for a 9-month perio

Previous weight loss experiences of bariatric surgery candidates: how much have patients dieted prior to surgery?

OBJECTIVE: To describe the dieting histories of bariatric surgery candidates. RESEARCH METHODS AND PROCEDURES: One hundred seventy-seven individuals with extreme obesity who sought bariatric surgery completed the Weight and Lifestyle Inventory, a self-report instrument that assesses several variables, including weight and dieting history. Patients' dieting histories were further explored with an aided recall during a preoperative behavioral/psychological evaluation performed by a mental health professional. RESULTS: Participants who completed the Weight and Lifestyle Inventory reported an av

Weight loss strategies, stress, and cognitive function: supervised versus unsupervised dieting.

The early stages of dieting to lose weight have been associated with neuro-psychological impairments. Previous work has not elucidated whether these impairments are a function solely of unsupported or supported dieting. Raised cortico-steroid levels have been implicated as a possible causal mechanism. Healthy, overweight, pre-menopausal women were randomised to one of three conditions in which they dieted either as part of a commercially available weight loss group, dieted without any group support or acted as non-dieting controls for 8 weeks. Testing occurred at baseline and at 1, 4 and 8 wee

Polycystic ovarian syndrome. A challenge for occupational health nursing.

Polycystic ovarian syndrome is a complex problem affecting as many as 10% of a company's female work force. The condition commonly presents with symptoms of oligomenorrhea or amenorrhea, central obesity, and hirsutism. Stein (1935) first postulated the condition as cystic ovaries resulting from continuous LH stimulation. A current hypothesis is that PCOS may be two conditions--one resulting from LH and a second the result of a hyperinsulinemia. Weight loss and exercise, often difficult to maintain, can often return a woman to normal ovulatory cycles. First line pharmocotherapy includes OCs wit

On the relation of flexible and rigid control of eating to body mass index and overeating in patients with binge eating disorder.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship of flexible and rigid dimensions of restrained eating to body mass index (BMI) and overeating in outpatients with binge eating disorder (BED). METHOD: Participants were 148 consecutive outpatients who met criteria for BED. The Three-Factor Eating Questionnaire (TFEQ) was administered to assess Cognitive Restraint, Hunger, and Disinhibition. The TFEQ also contains two Cognitive Restraint subscales--Flexible Control and Rigid Control. The Eating Disorder Examination-Questionnaire version (EDE-Q) was administered to assess frequency of different forms of ov

[Ten questions on the treatment of obesity: from dieting to surgery].

Advantages and risk of weight reduction achieved by combining diets or unbalanced diets with restriction of carbohydrates or fat are discussed. Nutriments differ according to their density, their flavour, their satiating, and their thermogenic effect. Food is also a source of pleasure and a remedy to frustration. One of the problems of dieting is that most patients regain the weight they have lost due to a hypometabolism secondary to caloric restriction. Only physical exercise together with behavior therapy are able to slow down this weight regain. The indication of drug treatment with orlista

Obesity medications and the treatment of type 2 diabetes.

Obesity is a chronic disease and requires ongoing treatment. Type 2 diabetes is associated with obesity and improves with weight loss. Diets of 800 kcal/d induce twice the weight loss induced by weight loss medications. The strength of weight loss medication, which should be used with diet and a lifestyle change program, is the maintenance of weight loss. Sibutramine and orlistat are the only two medications approved for the long-term treatment of obesity. Orlistat gives a reduction of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol in excess of that expected with weight loss, and the drop in blood

Body dissatisfaction among Chinese undergraduates and its implications for eating disorders in Hong Kong.

OBJECTIVES: To study the body dissatisfaction of Chinese undergraduates and its implications for eating disorders in Hong Kong. METHOD: A large sample of 1,581 subjects completed a "Body Dissatisfaction Questionnaire" (BDQ) which included 25 items about various body parts and questions on body indices, body shape dissatisfaction, and dieting. RESULTS: Whereas male subjects wanted to be taller and stronger in their upper body, the majority of female subjects felt fat in their lower body and were cognitively inclined to weigh less even though they were not obese. They desired a slimming of the
