Myocardial reverse remodeling has been reported to occur in 25-70% of patients with dilated cardiomyopathy. It is not yet fully understood whether remodeling represents disease remission or cure and which hearts retain this capacity to recover. In this review article we discuss the capacity for recovery in DCM, the prognostic implications of this recovery and potential clinical and imaging predictors for myocardial remodeling.

BACKGROUND: The objective of this study was to identify parameters of prognostic relevance in patients presenting with chronic left ventricular dysfunction who underwent endomyocardial biopsy.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 351 consecutive patients (age 47·7 ± 12·6 years, 281 male) with a chronic left ventricular dysfunction were enrolled. Endomyocardial biopsies were analysed by histopathology according to Dallas criteria and immunohistological WHO criteria. Virus genome was detected by polymerase chain reaction. The combined end point was time to death or heart transplantation.
RESULTS:

BACKGROUND: Vascular complications in homocystinuria have been known for many years, but there have been no reports to date on involvement of the ascending aorta.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study of patients with homocystinuria, known to a single metabolic centre, and evaluated in 2016 with a transthoracic echocardiogram. Aortic root dilation was defined as Z-score ≥ 2.0 SD, and graded mild (Z-score 2.0-3.0), moderate (Z-score 3.01-4.0) and severe (Z-score > 4.0).
RESULTS: The study population included 34 patients, median age of 44.3 years (IQR 33.3-52.2), 50% males, 69% diagnos

Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCMP) is a disease of the myocardium characterized by the dilatation of heart cavities with the development of systolic dysfunction but without a decrease in the thickness of the myocardium. DCMP is a frequent cause of cardioembolic syndrome, in particular cardioembolic ischemic stroke (CES). A case of a patient with DCMP after CES is presented.

Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is an important cause of heart failure and sudden cardiac death worldwide. Transcription factor TBX20 has been shown to play a crucial role in cardiac development and maintenance of adult mouse heart. Recent studies suggest that TBX20 may have a role in pathophysiology of DCM. In the present study, we examined TBX20 expression in idiopathic DCM patients and in an animal model of cardiomyopathy, and studied its correlation with echocardiographic indices of LV function. Endomyocardial biopsies (EMBs) from intraventricular septal from the right ventricle region were o

BACKGROUND: Syncope carries a poor prognosis among patients with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM).
OBJECTIVES: To assess the prevalence, describe the underlying mechanisms and to identify risk factors for syncope in patients with DCM.
METHODS: One thousand six hundred and ten medical files of 897 patients with a diagnosis of DCM were reviewed. Patients with syncope were identified and their clinical and paraclinical profiles were compared to an equal number of age- and sex-matched patients with DCM without syncope.
RESULTS: Thirty patients (27 males) with an average age of 62.5 years were ident

OBJECTIVE: The pre- and postoperative airway management during surgery of head and neck cancer is a clinically relevant and challenging task. Usually an epithelialised tracheostomy is used. The significance of percutaneous dilatational tracheostomy (PDT) in combination with tumour surgery of the head neck area has not yet been fully considered.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Within a surgical therapy of head neck tumours, 58 patients were treated with a PDT by Ciaglia or Fantoni at the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery, Martin-Luther-University Halle during the period from Decem…

Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a progressive heart disease characterized by left ventricular dilation and contractile dysfunction. Although many candidate genes have been identified with mouse models, few of them have been shown to be associated with DCM in humans. Germline depletion of Ncoa6, a nuclear hormone receptor coactivator, leads to embryonic lethality and heart defects. However, it is unclear whether Ncoa6 mutations cause heart diseases in adults. Here, we report that two independent mouse models of NCOA6 dysfunction develop severe DCM with impaired mitochondrial function and reduce

This case report describes two cases of dilated cardiomyopathy due to hypocalcaemia as a result of hypoparathyroidism. Patient A suffered from dilated cardiomyopathy due to secondary hypoparathyroidism as a result of previous neck surgery. Patient B suffered from dilated cardiomyopathy with congestive heart failure due to primary hypoparathyroidism. Hypoparathyroidism can exist for years before being recognised, especially after neck surgery. Besides standard treatment of heart failure, restoration of serum calcium levels with calcium and vitamin D supplementation can lead to rapid improvement

OBJECTIVE: Ectopic fat accumulation within and around the heart has been related to increased risk of heart disease. Limited data exist on cardiac adiposity in subjects with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). The aim of the study was to examine the components of cardiac steatosis and their relationship to LV structure and function in non-diabetic DCM patients.
METHODS: Myocardial and hepatic triglyceride (TG) contents were measured with 1.5 T magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS), and LV function, visceral adipose (VAT) and abdominal subcutaneous tissue (SAT), epicardial and pericardial fat by MRI

Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is the most common type of cardiomyopathy with a prevalence of 1 out of 2,500 in adults. Due to mild clinical symptoms in the early phase of the disease, the true prevalence is probably even much higher. Patients present with variable clinical symptoms ranging from mild systolic impairment of left ventricular function to congestive heart failure. Even sudden cardiac death may be the first clinical symptom of DCM. The severity of the disease is defined by the degree of impairment of global left ventricular function. Arrhythmias, such as ventricular or supraventricul

Arrhythmia risk stratification with regard to prophylactic implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) therapy was investigated in the Marburg Cardiomyopathy Study, which revealed left ventricular ejection fraction to be the only significant independent arrhythmia risk predictor in a relatively large dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) patient population. Based of the favorable results of the SCD-HeFT Trial, prophylactic ICD therapy became a class I indication for patients with DCM, NYHA class II or III heart failure and a left ventricular ejection fraction ≤ 35% despite optimized medical therapy. I

BACKGROUND: Eustachian tube dysfunction (ETD) is a common condition without an effective, accepted treatment. Balloon dilation Eustachian tuboplasty (BDET) has been recently proposed for the management of ETD. Previous studies of Eustachian tube function and treatment have not included a validated assessment of patient symptoms. We report for the first time the outcomes of BDET using a validated disease-specific symptom score, the 7-item Eustachian Tube Dysfunction Questionnaire (ETDQ-7).
METHODS: Consecutive patients undergoing BDET were prospectively enrolled from an otolaryngology practice

Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) causes significant morbidity and mortality and is the number one indication for cardiac transplantation in the United States. A large percentage of cases of DCM have no identifiable cause with evidence suggesting that these may represent an autoimmune disorder triggered by viral myocarditis. There is a growing body of literature suggesting that a number of immunoadsorption techniques, as well as plasma exchange, may have a role in the treatment of idiopathic DCM. The hypothesized autoimmune mechanism behind idiopathic DCM as well as the published evidence for the u
