Differential fMRI BOLD responses in amygdala in intermittent explosive disorder as a function of past Alcohol Use Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with intermittent explosive disorder (IED) were previously found to exhibit amygdala (AMYG) hyperactivation to anger faces during functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). However, acute alcohol consumption, and/or life history of alcoholism, may blunt amygdala responses to negative emotional stimuli. Thus, we examined the influence of a past history of DSM-5 Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) on the fMRI BOLD AMYG response to anger faces in IED. METHOD: Forty-two IED participants, 18 with a past history of AUD (IED+AUD) and 24 without Past AUD (IED), and 32 healthy contro

Prevention of problematic gambling behavior among adolescents: testing the efficacy of an integrative intervention.

This study aimed at testing the efficacy of an integrative intervention to prevent adolescent problem gambling acting on a multidimensional set of factors including gambling related knowledge and misconceptions, economic perception of gambling, and superstitious thinking. A pre- and post-test design was performed with 181 Italian adolescents (64% boys; Mean age = 15.95) randomly assigned to two groups (Training and No Training). Results revealed that the intervention was effective in improving correct knowledge about gambling and reducing misconceptions, perception of gambling's profitability,

Impulsivity and sexual assault in college men.

Although impulsivity has been consistently linked to perpetration of sexual aggression, results lack clarity because they do not account for the substantial heterogeneity associated with the construct. The UPPS-P model (Lynam, Smith, Whiteside, & Cyders, 2006), which was proposed to clarify the multidimensional nature of impulsivity, has yet to be applied to sexual aggression. We measured UPPS-P Impulsivity in a sample of male college students who also self-reported on perpetration of sexual aggression. As predicted, impulsivity distinguished perpetrators from nonperpetrators. Perpetrators sco

Binge eating in Parkinson's disease: prevalence, correlates and the contribution of deep brain stimulation.

Of 96 Parkinson's disease patients surveyed at the University of Florida Movement Disorders Center, one (1%) met diagnostic criteria for binge-eating disorder. Eight (8.3%) exhibited subthreshold binge eating. Psychometric criteria classified problem gambling in 17.8%, hoarding in 8.3%, compulsive buying in 11.5%, hypersexuality in 1.0%, and mania in 1.0% of patients. More overeaters met psychometric criteria for at least one additional impulse-control disorder (67% versus 29%). No more overeaters than non-overeaters were taking a dopamine agonist (44% versus 41%). More overeaters had a histor

On the value of nonremovable reminders for behavior modification: an application to nail-biting (onychophagia).

The authors examined the effectiveness of a novel behavior modification method for dysfunctional and impulsive habits, based on nonremovable reminders (NrRs). NrRs were implemented by having participants wear nonremovable wristbands designated to constantly remind them of their resolution to quit the targeted habit (nail-biting). Participants were 80 nail-biters who resolved to quit. The NrR approach was contrasted with an aversion-based behavioral modification technique. Recovery was assessed after 3 and 6 weeks of treatment and in a 5-month follow-up. The NrR method was associated with lower

A family history study of intermittent explosive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Intermittent Explosive Disorder (IED) is newly appreciated as a commonly occurring disorder of impulsive aggression. Since aggression and impulsivity are under genetic influence, IED may be familial. METHODS: Blinded and controlled family history study of IED and co-morbid conditions in an outpatient clinical research center for impulsive aggression. The subjects were first-degree relatives of individuals who did and did not meet criteria for IED by DSM-IV and Research Criteria. RESULTS: Elevated Morbid Risk of IED was observed in relatives of IED Probands compared with relatives

[Factors predisposing to pathological gambling].

An examination of 150 patients suffering from pathological gambling (PG) has shown that a PG predisposition includes 3 components: personal, morphofunctional and gender. The personal component is a combination of lability and hyperthymia, higher extraversion, easy communication, riskiness, low empathic ability, inclination to emotional satiation. The morphofunctional component embraces structural (a pathology of cortical and subcortical areas, localized mainly in the frontal region and limbic structure of brain) and functional (abnormalities of regulatory processes, signs of cerebral immaturit

Multivariate framework of the Brief Questionnaire of Smoking Urges.

We conducted an investigation of the 10-item Brief Questionnaire of Smoking Urges (QSU-Brief) to confirm its hypothesized two-factor structure and to assess the validity and reliability of its total score and these factors. Data were obtained from a 7-week clinical trial on smoking cessation (N=626). The hypothesized two-factor structure of the QSU-Brief was supported by fit indexes (>0.90) from a confirmatory factor analysis at each of three relevant time points (baseline, Week 2, Week 4). Corresponding values of Cronbach's alpha were acceptable (>0.75) on the Total Craving Score and on Facto

Disordered gambling among Chinese casino employees.

A previous study suggests that casino employees are at higher risk for disordered gambling than non-casino employees. The present study examined the cognitive correlates of the gambling involvement of Chinese casino employees. These potential cognitive correlates included attitudes toward the gaming industry and gambling activities, perceived job meaningfulness, and job stress. One hundred and nineteen Chinese respondents (M = 57; F = 62) working as dealers in Macao casinos were recruited through convenience sampling to fill out a questionnaire. The results revealed that about 7% of the respon

A prospective study of the impact of opening a casino on gambling behaviours: 2- and 4-year follow-ups.

OBJECTIVE: It is widely believed that the rate of pathological gambling is related to the accessibility and availability of gambling activities. Few empirical studies have yet been conducted to evaluate this hypothesis. Using a longitudinal prospective design, the current study evaluates the impact of a casino in Canada's Hull, Quebec region. METHOD: A random sample of respondents from Hull (experimental group) and from Quebec City (comparison group) completed the South Oaks Gambling Screen (SOGS) and gambling- related questions before the opening of the Hull Casino (pretest), 1 year after th

Development of the Drake Beliefs about Chance inventory.

The present research describes the development and validation of a cognitive assessment instrument, the Drake Beliefs about Chance (DBC) inventory, designed to determine and quantify erroneous beliefs about games of chance. Principal components analyses showed that the DBC assesses two primary dimensions, Illusion of Control and Superstition. Correlation analyses showed that scores on these two dimensions are related to higher frequency of gambling behaviors in both adults from the general population and clients from gambling treatment centers. Of the two sets of erroneous beliefs, Illusion of

Gambling and problem gambling among recently sentenced male prisoners in four New Zealand prisons.

Recently sentenced inmates in four New Zealand male prisons (N = 357) were interviewed to assess their gambling involvement, problem gambling and criminal offending. Frequent participation in and high expenditure on continuous forms of gambling prior to imprisonment were reported. Nineteen percent said they had been in prison for a gambling-related offence and most of this offending was property-related and non-violent. On the basis of their SOGS-R scores, 21% were lifetime probable pathological gamblers and 16% were probable pathological gamblers during the six months prior to imprisonment. O

Psychological treatment of slot-machine pathological gambling: new perspectives.

In this paper the most relevant findings of our research team on pathological gambling in the last decade are presented. There is no conclusive empirical evidence of a specific profile of the pathological gamblers. The choice treatment appears to be stimulus control and in vivo exposure with response prevention, followed by a cognitive-behavioral intervention in relapse prevention. Predictive variables for the therapeutic failure were the dissatisfaction with the treatment, the alcohol abuse and the neuroticism as a personality variable. Unanswered questions for future research in this field a

Implications of impulsive and affective symptoms for serotonin function in bulimia nervosa.

BACKGROUND: Bulimic, impulsive and depressive syndromes have all been associated with abnormalities in brain serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine; 5-HT) mechanisms. METHODS: We had 26 bulimic women and 22 normal-eater women report impulsive, affective, self-destructive and bulimic symptoms, and then provide serial blood samples for measurement of: [3H]-paroxetine binding in platelets; and, prolactin (PRL) responses following oral meta-chlorophenylpiperazine (m-CPP). RESULTS: Bulimic status was associated with markedly reduced density of paroxetine-binding sites, modest blunting of m-CPP stimulated

Pathological gambling and platelet MAO activity: a psychobiological study.

OBJECTIVE: The authors studied platelet monoamine oxidase (MAO) activity and psychological characteristics of male pathological gamblers. METHOD: Twenty-seven male pathological gamblers were compared with a group of healthy individuals who were matched by age, sex, and tobacco consumption. Measures included platelet MAO activity and scores on the MMPI and Zuckerman's Sensation Seeking Scale. RESULTS: Platelet MAO activity and scores on several MMPI scales for the two groups were significantly different, but measures of sensation seeking were not. No correlations of biological significance we

Manic symptoms and impulsivity during bipolar depressive episodes.

OBJECTIVES: In contrast to the extensive literature on the frequent occurrence of depressive symptoms in manic patients, there is little information about manic symptoms in bipolar depressions. Impulsivity is a prominent component of the manic syndrome, so manic features during depressive syndromes may be associated with impulsivity and its consequences, including increased risk of substance abuse and suicidal behavior. Therefore, we investigated the prevalence of manic symptoms and their relationships to impulsivity and clinical characteristics in patients with bipolar depressive episodes. M

Phenotyping of mild behavioral impairment domains in multi-regional dementia-free older adults of Chinese ethnicity: impulse dyscontrol as the leading domain.

BACKGROUND: Mild behavioral impairment (MBI) is an early neurobehavioral marker of dementia, yet MBI domain patterns remain underexplored among populations of Chinese ethnicity. This study aimed to characterize MBI domain phenotypes by examining the prevalence of MBI domains and identifying the leading domain across multi-regional cohorts of dementia-free older adults of Chinese ethnicity. METHODS: Data from three previously unpublished datasets (Hangzhou community cohort, China Longitudinal Aging Study and Singapore memory clinic cohort) and three published studies were integrated to estimat

Cabergoline and impulse control disorders: Screening patients with pituitary adenomas in an endocrinology clinic.

BACKGROUND: Cabergoline, a dopamine agonist, is a first-line treatment for prolactinoma. However, de novo impulse control disorders (ICDs) are an increasingly recognized side effect, with reported prevalence up to 59.8 %. This study evaluated risk factors for ICD development and assessed the effectiveness of current screening practices. METHODS: Electronic medical records were reviewed for patients seen by endocrinology with a diagnosis of "Benign neoplasm of pituitary gland (D35.2∗)" who had been prescribed cabergoline. Records were examined for ICD risk factors, clinical evidence of ICDs, a
