PURPOSE: Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) was added to the Recommended Uniform Screening Panel (RUSP) in July 2018, following FDA approval of the first effective SMA treatment, and demonstration of feasibility of high-throughput newborn screening using a primary molecular assay.
