The concentrations of four organophosphate esters (OPEs) were measured in 50 dust samples from homes (n = 10), offices (n = 9), university computer laboratories (n = 12) and cars (n = 19) in Durban, South Africa. Two cases of acute respiratory distress syndrome related to zinc fume inhalation and zinc powder inhalation are presented. Case 1 demonstrated acute respiratory symptoms during the work of distortion correction of iron boards, coated with a rust preventative including rich zinc using an acetylene gas burner. Transforming growth factor (TGF)-beta plays a critical role in diabetic nephropathy. To isolate the contribution of one of the signaling pathways of TGF-beta, the Smad3 gene in the mouse was knocked out at exons 2 and 3, and the effect was studied in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetes over a period of 6 wk. We report a sentinel case of acute eosinophilic pneumonia in a firefighter exposed to high concentrations of World Trade Center dust during the rescue effort from September 11 to 24. The firefighter presented with a Pa(O2) of 53 mm Hg and responded to oxygen and corticosteroids.
