BACKGROUND: Blast-induced hearing loss is an acoustic trauma commonly caused by high-energy explosions of improvised explosive devices, and the auditory system may be affected by blast damage. This study aims to evaluate the protective effect of tympanic membrane perforation (TMP) on the inner ear against blast injury.
METHODS: In this study, 43 adult patients who had suffered blast injury were divided into three subgroups: intact tympanic membranes in both ears, unilateral TMP, and bilateral TMP. Each patient underwent a comprehensive audiogram, including bone conduction, in the audiology de

Tissue-specific alternative splicing (AS) is emerging as one of the most exciting types of mechanisms associated with organ development and disease. In the auditory system, many hearing-related genes undergo AS, and errors in this process result in syndromic or non-syndromic hearing loss. However, little is known about the factors and mechanisms directing AS in the inner ear. In the present study, we identified a novel RNA-binding protein, Rbm24, which was critically involved in regulating inner-ear-specific AS. Rbm24 deletion resulted in hearing loss and defects in motor coordination. Global

Inhibition of cochlear N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors with AM-101, a small molecule antagonist delivered by intratympanic injection, represents a novel approach to treat acute tinnitus triggered by glutamate excitotoxicity. An earlier double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled phase II clinical trial (TACTT0) had demonstrated a significant and dose-dependent improvement in tinnitus triggered by acute acoustic trauma or otitis media from baseline to day 90. A second phase II trial (TACTT1) now sought to evaluate the most appropriate dose regimen for this treatment. Outcomes from the TA

The maintenance of sensory hair cell stereocilia is critical for lifelong hearing; however, mechanisms of structural homeostasis remain poorly understood. Conflicting models propose that stereocilia F-actin cores are either continually renewed every 24-48 h via a treadmill or are stable, exceptionally long-lived structures. Here to distinguish between these models, we perform an unbiased survey of stereocilia actin dynamics in more than 500 utricle hair cells. Live-imaging EGFP-β-actin or dendra2-β-actin reveal stable F-actin cores with turnover and elongation restricted to stereocilia tips. F

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: In many centers, MR imaging of the inner ear and auditory pathway performed on 1.5T or 3T systems is part of the preoperative work-up of cochlear implants. We investigated the applicability of clinical inner ear MR imaging at 7T and compared the visibility of inner ear structures and nerves within the internal auditory canal with images acquired at 3T.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirteen patients with sensorineural hearing loss eligible for cochlear implantation underwent examinations on 3T and 7T scanners. Two experienced head and neck radiologists evaluated the 52 inner

BACKGROUND: Unlike mammals, teleost fishes are capable of regenerating sensory inner ear hair cells that have been lost following acoustic or ototoxic trauma. Previous work indicated that immediately following sound exposure, zebrafish saccules exhibit significant hair cell loss that recovers to pre-treatment levels within 14 days. Following acoustic trauma in the zebrafish inner ear, we used microarray analysis to identify genes involved in inner ear repair following acoustic exposure. Additionally, we investigated the effect of growth hormone (GH) on cell proliferation in control zebrafish u

In the mouse, development of the lateral semicircular canal of the inner ear is sensitive to Bmp4 heterozygosity. In the C57BL6 background 30% of the heterozygotes display circling behavior, 66% have a specific defect in the vestibular part of the inner ear, namely the constriction, interruption or absence of the lateral semicircular canal. Only mice having both ears affected display circling behavior. In the (C57BL6xCBA)N1 background, the penetrance of the canal phenotype is greatly reduced, and bilateral lateral canal defect is not sufficient to induce circling. We found association of the c

The aim of this study was to assess the performance of three-dimensional fast recovery fast spin-echo (3DFRFSE) for imaging of the inner ear as well as the facial and vestibulocochlear nerves. We evaluated 3DFRFSE sequences, comparing it with 3D fast spin-echo (3DFSE) in a water phantom and in 12 normal volunteers. We also examined 66 patients using 3DFRFSE sequence and assessed the visualization of their pathologies. In a water phantom study, signal intensity (SI) on 3DFRFSE was higher than that on 3DFSE at the same TR ranging from 1,500 to 6,000 ms. In normal volunteers, 3DFRFSE with TR of 2

In man, altered gravity may lead to a vestibular dysfunction causing space motion sickness. A hypothesis was developed, according to which asymmetric inner ear statoliths might be the morphological basis of space sickness. The animal model, fish, revealed further information: inner ear "stone" (otolith) growth is dependent on the amplitude and the direction of gravity, regulated by a negative feedback mechanism. The present study was focused on the question, where the regulation centre of adaptive otolith growth may be situated. Therefore, the vestibular nerve was unilaterally transected in ne

Targeted mutagenesis in mice demonstrates that the POU-domain gene Brn4/Pou3f4 plays a crucial role in the patterning of the mesenchymal compartment of the inner ear. Brn4 is expressed extensively throughout the condensing mesenchyme of the developing inner ear. Mutant animals displayed behavioral anomalies that resulted from functional deficits in both the auditory and vestibular systems, including vertical head bobbing, changes in gait, and hearing loss. Anatomical analyses of the temporal bone, which is derived in part from the otic mesenchyme, demonstrated several dysplastic features in th

In mammals, the damage to the hair cells of the inner ear due to exposure to noise or other ototoxic agents is irreversible. In fish, reptiles and birds, however, the hair cells may regenerate, probably from the supporting cells. This regeneration process in the inner ear is being intensively examined in animals in the hope of curing the sensorineural hearing loss in human subjects in future. The aim of the study was to assess hair cell regeneration in the inner ear of chicks after exposure to industrial noise, depending on the level of exposure. The birds were exposed either to the noise at t

INTRODUCTION: Group B streptococcal meningitis is unusual in adults. It occurs in patients with a chronic disease.
EXEGESIS: We report a case of group B streptococcal meningitis that occurred in a 32-year-old woman, uncovering inner ear congenital malformation associated with cerebrospinal fluid fistula. There was no recurrent episode of meningitis during a 2-year period following surgical correction of the malformation.
CONCLUSION: Clinical signs suggesting cerebrospinal fluid fistula should be considered in any adult patient with severe group B streptococcal infection.
