Medical cannabis legalization and the use of illicit drugs, alcohol, and tobacco.

Amidst the global shift toward cannabis legalization, this study examines medical cannabis (MC) sales as an indicator of economic activity and innovation. It explores associations between MC sales, and variables including tobacco use, alcohol consumption, amphetamine, cocaine and cannabis prevalence, and gross domestic product (GDP), using a fixed effects (FE) panel regression model. It also evaluates associations between cannabis legalization and MC sales over time using a dynamic Difference-in-Differences (DiD) approach with multiple time periods.  METHODS: Panel data from 20 countries, incl

Barriers and facilitators for implementation of the SWORD evidence-based psychological intervention for fear of cancer recurrence in three different healthcare settings.

PURPOSE: Fear of cancer recurrence (FCR) interventions are effective, but few are implemented. This study aimed to identify barriers and facilitators for implementing the evidence-based blended SWORD intervention in routine psycho-oncological care. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews with 19 cancer survivors and 18 professionals from three healthcare settings assessed barriers and facilitators in six domains as described by the determinant frameworks of Grol and Flottorp: (1) innovation, (2) professionals, (3) patients, (4) social context, (5) organization, and (6) economic and political cont

Economic vulnerability, violence, and sexual risk factors for HIV among female sex workers in Tijuana, Mexico.

Economic vulnerability is often reported to underlie involvement in sex work among female sex workers (FSW), but may also create urgency in women's work, limiting women's negotiating power with clients and in turn, increasing their vulnerability for violence and HIV. This study assessed economic vulnerability in relation to violence and sexual risk behaviors for HIV among a sample of FSW in Tijuana, Mexico. FSW at least 18 years of age were recruited through venue-based sampling for a survey (n = 228) and in-depth interviews (n = 50) to investigate HIV risk factors in this region. Using crude

Newcastle disease vaccine adoption by smallholder households in Tanzania: Identifying determinants and barriers.

BACKGROUND: Food security is critical to achieving sustainable growth, poverty reduction, and political and economic stability. Livestock have the potential to improve the food security of smallholder households in developing countries, but livestock productivity is constrained by disease. The extent to which households adopt innovations such as vaccines impacts disease control; however, the behavioral and economic drivers underlying household decisions to adopt or forgo vaccination are not well understood. We address this gap with a study of adoption of Newcastle disease (ND) vaccines by chic

Determinants of self-rated health in women: a population-based study in Armavir Marz, Armenia, 2001 & 2004.

BACKGROUND: The former soviet Republic of Armenia entered a turbulent and long-lasting economic transition when it declared its independence in 1991. This analysis sought to identify the determinants of poor self-rated health as an indirect measure of health status and mortality prognosis in an adult female population during a period of socio-economic transition in Armenia. METHODS: Differences in self-rated health in women respondents were analyzed along three main dimensions: social, behavioral/attitudinal, and psychological. The data used were generated from cross-sectional household healt

[Research progress on cardiac rehabilitation in patients with implanted cardiac defibrillator].

Implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) is the most effective measure to prevent sudden cardiac death. However, ICD patients frequently have problems such as decline of exercise tolerance and quality of life, anxiety and depression after operation, which require cardiac rehabilitation (CR). A considerable amount of studies have proved that CR is an effective secondary prevention measure for patients with cardiovascular disease. Its safety and effectiveness have been supported by evidence-based medicine research, which can prevent the recurrence of cardiovascular events, reduce the readmis

Advancing environmental exposure assessment science to benefit society.

Awareness of the human health impacts of exposure to air pollution is growing rapidly. For example, it has become evident that the adverse health effects of air pollution are more pronounced in disadvantaged populations. Policymakers in many jurisdictions have responded to this evidence by enacting initiatives that lead to lower concentrations of air pollutants, such as urban traffic restrictions. In this review, we focus on the interplay between advances in environmental exposure assessment and developments in policy. We highlight recent progress in the granular measurement of air pollutants

[Depression and epilepsy: comorbidities, pathogenesis, principles of therapy].

Numerous trials of last years confirm the bilateral link between depression and epilepsy with mutual complication of both diseases. Depression increases the risk of the first unprovoked paroxysm, worsens the compliance of epileptic patients, leads to decrease of the response both to therapeutic and surgical treatment and to increase of side effects of antiepileptic drugs. Depression is associated with high risk of suicidal behavior and reduces the quality of life level. Depression in epileptic patients is characterized by atypical clinical course in most cases what makes its diagnostics diffic

On a practitioner's need of further development of Wechsler scales. Adaptive Intelligence Diagnosticum (AID 2).

Wechsler's intelligence test-batteries are still popular yet suffer from psychometric shortcomings and lack a certain content improvement and enlargement. In this paper a new approach will be presented that suits traditional Wechsler-testing. The approach in question is the Adaptive Intelligence Diagnosticum (AID 2; Kubinger & Wurst, 2000). Due to it's "branched testing" design, AID 2 works out to be more economical and in this regard also offers other advantages, such as parallel tests and short forms. AID 2 offers a method of survey for identifying specific developmental disorders or learnin

Analysis tool for swimming marine microorganisms using acoustic tweezer.

Phytoplankton, as primary producers through photosynthesis, are fundamental to marine ecosystems. However, their rapid proliferation in coastal regions has increasingly led to harmful algal blooms (HABs), commonly known as red tides, which pose significant environmental, economic, and health risks. A deeper understanding of phytoplankton dynamics, particularly their movement patterns such as diel vertical migration (DVM), is essential for effective monitoring and prevention of HABs. Traditional measurement techniques, including acoustic Doppler current profiling (ADCP) and acoustic backscatter

The asset-vulnerability trap: climate shocks and health-seeking behavior for chronic diseases in Somalia.

Somalia faces a dual crisis of high chronic disease burden and extreme climate vulnerability. This study examines the predictors of health-seeking behavior (HSB) for chronic diseases among Somali households. Using data from the 2020 Somali Demographic and Health Survey (SDHS), survey-weighted probit model was applied to a sample of 69,998 individuals to analyze predictors of regular treatment-seeking behavior. Approximately 6.6% of the population reported a chronic disease, with 48.8% of those individuals seeking regular treatment. Wealth (AME = 0.094, p < 0.001) and urban residence (AME = 0.0

Understanding the intention-behavior gap in brain decisions on green express packaging: An ERP study.

Accelerating the green transformation of express packaging is crucial for sustainable logistics. This study combines behavioral experiments with event-related potential (ERP) technology to explore the interactive effects of green advertising appeals and price premiums on consumers' willingness to pay for green express packaging. Behavioral results reveal that price premium act as a primary structural barrier, with consumers' green choices decreasing significantly as costs increase. The ERPs data uncover the underlying psychological conflict during decision-making: in the early stage, high pric

Experimental Evidence on Age-related Differential Outcomes Associated With Substance Abuse.

Growing evidence indicates that adolescent substance abuse is now an alarming concern that imposes a considerable socio-economic burden on societies. On the other hand, numerous studies have shown that due to specific neurophysiological features, the brain is more vulnerable to the adverse effects of psychoactive drugs at an early age. Unfortunately, these negative effects are not limited to the period of drug use, but can persistently affect the brain's responsiveness to future exposures to the same or other types of drug. For researchers to develop pharmacological strategies for managing sub

Engineered extracellular vesicle-based gene therapy for the treatment of discogenic back pain.

Painful musculoskeletal disorders such as intervertebral disc (IVD) degeneration associated with chronic low back pain (termed "Discogenic back pain", DBP), are a significant socio-economic burden worldwide and contribute to the growing opioid crisis. Yet there are very few if any successful interventions that can restore the tissue's structure and function while also addressing the symptomatic pain. Here we have developed a novel non-viral gene therapy, using engineered extracellular vesicles (eEVs) to deliver the developmental transcription factor FOXF1 to the degenerated IVD in an in vivo m

[Internet- and Mobile-based interventions aimed at suicide risks: a review of the literature.].

UNLABELLED: Many suicidal people do not receive professional assistance due to economic problems, the desire to autonomously solve the problem, or the stigma. Internet and Mobile-based Interventions (IMIs) can overcome many of these obstacles, offering flexible and accessible interventions. We conducted a narrative literature review about the characteristics of IMIs focused on suicide risks. We studied their efficacy and some examples of applications and websites used to prevent and treat suicide risk. METHOD: Literature research was conducted on Pub Med and PsycINFO databases. RESULTS: IMIs

The Microbiota-Gut-Brain Axis During Heat Stress in Chickens: A Review.

Heat stress is a global issue for the poultry industries with substantial annual economic losses and threats to bird health and welfare. When chickens are exposed to high ambient temperatures, like other species they undergo multiple physiological alterations, including behavioral changes, such as cessation of feeding, initiation of a stress signaling cascade, and intestinal immune, and inflammatory responses. The brain and gut are connected and participate in bidirectional communication via the nervous and humoral systems, this network collectively known as the gut-brain axis. Moreover, heat
