Instability of the elbow treated with semiconstrained total elbow arthroplasty.

The results of nineteen semiconstrained modified Coonrad-Morrey total elbow arthroplasties performed in nineteen patients to treat instability were evaluated at an average of seventy-two months (range, twenty-five to 128 months) postoperatively. Preoperatively, all patients had either a flail elbow or gross instability of the elbow that prevented useful function of the extremity. The instability of sixteen elbows was the result of a traumatic injury or of the treatment of such an injury. The most recent result was satisfactory for sixteen elbows and unsatisfactory for three. The average overal

Ulnar neuropathy.

Ulnar neuropathy at the elbow is the second most common compressive neuropathy. Less common, although similarly disabling, are ulnar neuropathies above the elbow, at the forearm, and the wrist, which can present with different combinations of intrinsic hand muscle weakness and sensory loss. Electrodiagnostic studies are moderately sensitive in diagnosing ulnar neuropathy, although their ability to localize the site of nerve injury is often limited. Nerve imaging with ultrasound can provide greater localization of ulnar injury and identification of specific anatomical pathology causing nerve en

Utilising an internal joint stabilizer to ensure post-release elbow stability for patients with severe post-traumatic elbow stiffness: A retrospective cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: The treatment of severe post-traumatic elbow stiffness is extremely complex. Complete open release of the elbow joint and reconstruction of stiffness-related injuries are considered crucial; however, these procedures may lead to elbow instability, particularly chronic instability due to underlying conditions. This retrospective study aimed to assess the outcomes of using an internal joint stabilizer (IJS) to ensure post-release stability in these complex cases. HYPOTHESIS: IJS would demonstrate reliability as a treatment technique for severe elbow stiffness associated with intraope

Return to Sport Following Elbow Dislocation: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Elbow dislocation is the second most common large joint dislocation in athletes, frequently occurring in contact and high-impact sports such as football, wrestling, and gymnastics. While these injuries typically result from a fall onto an outstretched hand with the elbow in near full extension, both nonoperative and surgical treatments have demonstrated high success rates in restoring elbow function, enabling athletes to return to sport (RTS) with favorable functional outcomes. PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: The purpose of this systematic review was to evaluate RTS rate, time to return, and

Anteroposterior Cannulated Screw Fixation of Coronoid Fractures in Terrible Triad Injuries: A Simple Syringe-guided Technique.

OBJECTIVE: The fixation of the coronoid fractures in terrible triad injuries is quite challenging. In this study, we introduce a minimally invasive technique using a syringe as a guide for insertion of the cannulated screw in an anterior to posterior fashion to fix the coronoid fracture in patients with terrible triad injuries. METHODS: In this retrospective study, clinical data of patients suffering from terrible triad injuries between 2012 and 2019 were analyzed. Fifteen patients with an average age of 38.2 years old (21-56 years) were enrolled in this study, of which 12 were males and thre

Injuries in badminton.

Though badminton is one of the most widely played sports in the world, it has received little sports medical interest. Based on the few existing studies on injuries in badminton, compared to other sports it is of relatively low risk and dominated by overuse injuries. The injury duration is relatively long, but only a few working days are lost. Anatomically, most injuries are localised to the foot and ankle. The single most frequent injuries are Achilles tendinitis and tennis elbow. Rupture of the Achilles tendon is a rare injury, which is typically seen in older recreational players. When the

Investigating the Effects of Physical Therapy Timing, Intensity and Duration on Post-Traumatic Joint Contracture in a Rat Elbow Model.

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic joint contracture (PTJC), characterized by loss of motion and permanent stiffness, affects up to 50% of patients following elbow joint dislocation or fracture. Mechanisms governing successful conservative treatment methods aimed at preventing elbow PTJC and avoiding operative treatments (e.g., physical therapy) are poorly understood. Using a previously established rat model of elbow PTJC, the purpose of this study was to explore the effect of varying timing, intensity and duration of active, functional exercise on joint motion outcomes. METHODS: Following a surgical

Results and outcome predictors after open release of complete ankylosis of the elbow caused by heterotopic ossification.

BACKGROUND: Heterotopic ossification (HO) may lead to complete elbow ankylosis, resulting in severe disability. The prognostic factors that may be valuable in guiding treatment of this condition have not yet been evaluated. The goals of this study were to describe the outcomes of open release for ankylosed elbow caused by HO and to analyse factors associated with clinical outcomes. METHOD: This retrospective study assessed 41 patients with ankylosed elbows treated by open release surgery. We report final clinical outcomes and analyses of the association between outcomes and clinical variables

Stress sonography of the ulnar collateral ligament of the elbow in professional baseball pitchers: a 10-year study.

BACKGROUND: An injury to the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) of the elbow is potentially career threatening for elite baseball pitchers. Stress ultrasound (US) of the elbow allows for evaluation of both the UCL and the ulnohumeral joint space at rest and with stress. HYPOTHESIS: Stress US can identify morphological and functional UCL changes and may predict the risk of a UCL injury in elite pitchers. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional study; Level of evidence, 3. METHODS: A total of 368 asymptomatic professional baseball pitchers underwent preseason stress US of their dominant and nondominant el

The timing of open surgical release of post-traumatic elbow stiffness: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Open release of post-traumatic elbow stiffness is effective in restoring elbow function, but there is no guideline on the optimal time point of surgical release so far. The purpose of this article was to summarize the current available literature reporting on the timing of open release of post-traumatic elbow stiffness. METHODS: The PubMed, Cochrane Library, and EMBASE were searched with a set of predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Manual searches for references were performed to find potential relevant studies. Two authors separately extracted data from all the articles

Biomechanics of overhand throwing with implications for injuries.

Proper throwing mechanics may enable an athlete to achieve maximum performance with minimum chance of injury. While quantifiable differences do exist in proper mechanics for various sports, certain similarities are found in all overhand throws. One essential property is the utilisation of a kinetic chain to generate and transfer energy from the larger body parts to the smaller, more injury-prone upper extremity. This kinetic chain in throwing includes the following sequence of motions: stride, pelvis rotation, upper torso rotation, elbow extension, shoulder internal rotation and wrist flexion.

Injury surveillance at the USTA Boys' Tennis Championships: a 6-yr study.

Injuries that required physical or medical assistance were recorded for participants at the United States Tennis Association National Boys' Tennis Championships from 1986-1988, 1990-1992 (N = 1440, 240 athletes per year). Over the 6-yr period, a total of 304 athletes (or 21.1%) sustained new or recurrent injuries that required evaluation by the medical team. New injuries alone numbered 145 (incidence rate of 9.9 per 100 athletes). The analysis of injuries showed a higher rate of lower than upper extremity injuries. When evaluated by anatomic regions, back injuries were most common followed by

[Review of common shoulder and elbow pathologies in athletes].

Sport participation in Switzerland is steadily growing, with 8% sustaining injuries while practicing. Most popular sports include hiking, cycling, swimming, alpine skiing, and fitness. Thirty percent of shoulder injuries in urban areas are sport-related, mainly from football, cycling, and alpine skiing. Pathologies vary by arm movement : below horizontal (running, ice hockey), above the head (swimming), or throwing (handball). It is essential to differentiate biomechanical adaptations from actual injuries. This article summarizes common pathologies and highlights surgical management of less fr

Postoperative Outcomes of Anteromedial Approach in Patients with Elbow Varus Posteromedial Rotatory Instability: A Retrospective Study.

BACKGROUND Traumatic elbow varus posteromedial rotatory instability can involve an anteromedial coronoid fracture, proximal avulsion of the lateral collateral ligaments, and a tear of the ulnar collateral ligament posterior bundle, leading to chronic elbow instability, cartilage damage, and osteoarthritis. This retrospective study evaluated postoperative outcomes at 6 months in 9 patients with elbow varus posteromedial rotatory instability following an anteromedial surgical approach using a steel plate and high-strength suture. MATERIAL AND METHODS This retrospective study analyzed the data of

Posterior radial head dislocation without ulnar fracture.

Posterior radial head dislocation without an ulnar fracture in an adult is a rare injury. The pathology is often unrecognized initially. The patient's resultant elbow motion becomes severely compromised. Prompt diagnosis and reduction of the dislocation yield excellent results. A review of the biomechanical studies of the elbow ligaments enables us to propose a pathophysiological model of this injury, and a case report and review of the literature are presented.

Surgical treatments of post-traumatic elbow stiffness: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Surgeons may choose between open vs. arthroscopic arthrolysis to address a post-traumatic elbow stiffness (PTES) based on their proficiency in elbow arthroscopy, the ulnar nerve condition, the presence and location of heterotopic ossification, the degree of contracture, and the extent of articular surface damage. This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to compare the effectiveness, range of motion (ROM), and complication rates between open and arthroscopic release in patients with PTES. METHODS: The Preferred Reporting Item for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines

Clinical guideline on the open arthrolysis for post-traumatic elbow stiffness in adult patients.

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic elbow stiffness poses significant clinical challenges for upper limb surgeons and severely impairs patients' ability to perform essential daily activities, including eating, dressing, and personal hygiene, thereby imposing substantial socioeconomic burdens. Open arthrolysis is widely employed when conservative therapies fail, yet current literatures demonstrate considerable heterogeneity in treatment concepts, surgical techniques, and perioperative management. This evidence-based clinical practice guideline aims to standardize treatment profiles and improve surgical
