[Adaptive repetitive control of wrist tremor suppression based on functional electrical stimulation].

Tremor is an involuntary and repetitive swinging movement of limb, which can be regarded as a periodic disturbance in tremor suppression system based on functional electrical stimulation (FES). Therefore, using repetitive controller to adjust the level and timing of FES applied to the corresponding muscles, so as to generate the muscle torque opposite to the tremor motion, is a feasible means of tremor suppression. At present, most repetitive control systems based on FES assume that tremor is a fixed single frequency signal, but in fact, tremor may be a multi-frequency signal and the tremor fr

Exploration of sensations evoked during electrical stimulation of the median nerve at the wrist level.

Objective.Nerve rehabilitation following nerve injury or surgery at the wrist level is a lengthy process during which not only peripheral nerves regrow towards receptors and muscles, but also the brain undergoes plastic changes. As a result, at the time when nerves reach their targets, the brain might have already allocated some of the areas within the somatosensory cortex that originally processed hand signals to some other regions of the body. The aim of this study is to show that it is possible to evoke a variety of somatotopic sensations related to the hand while stimulating proximally to

Effect of ambient lighting on frequency dependence in transcranial electrical stimulation-induced phosphenes.

Inconsistencies have been found in the relationship between ambient lighting conditions and frequency-dependence in transcranial electric stimulation (tES) induced phosphenes. Using a within-subjects design across lighting condition (dark, mesopic [dim], photopic [bright]) and tES stimulation frequency (10, 13, 16, 18, 20 Hz), this study determined phosphene detection thresholds in 24 subjects receiving tES using an FPz-Cz montage. Minima phosphene thresholds were found at 16 Hz in mesopic, 10 Hz in dark and 20 Hz in photopic lighting conditions, with these thresholds being substantially lower…

STIMGRASP: A Home-Based Functional Electrical Stimulator for Grasp Restoration in Daily Activities.

Thousands of people currently suffer from motor limitations caused by SCI and strokes, which impose personal and social challenges. These individuals may have a satisfactory recovery by applying functional electrical stimulation that enables the artificial restoration of grasping after a muscular conditioning period. This paper presents the STIMGRASP, a home-based functional electrical stimulator to be used as an assistive technology for users with tetraplegia or hemiplegia. The STIMGRASP is a microcontrolled stimulator with eight multiplexed and independent symmetric biphasic constant current

Neuroprotective Effects of Electrical Stimulation Following Ischemic Stroke in Non-Human Primates.

Brain stimulation has emerged as a novel therapy for ischemic stroke, a major cause of brain injury that often results in lifelong disability. Although past works in rodents have demonstrated protective effects of stimulation following stroke, few of these results have been replicated in humans due to the anatomical differences between rodent and human brains and a limited understanding of stimulation-induced network changes. Therefore, we combined electrophysiology and histology to study the neuroprotective mechanisms of electrical stimulation following cortical ischemic stroke in non-human p

Hippocampal responses to electrical stimulation of the major input pathways are modulated by dentate spikes.

Dentate gyrus (DG) is important for pattern separation and spatial memory, and it is thought to gate information flow to the downstream hippocampal subregions. Dentate spikes (DSs) are high-amplitude, fast, positive local-field potential events taking place in the DG during immobility and sleep, and they have been connected to memory consolidation in rodents. DSs are a result of signaling from the entorhinal cortex (EC) to the DG, and they suppress firing of pyramidal cells in the CA3 and CA1. To study the effects of DSs to signaling in the hippocampal tri-synaptic loop, we electrically stimul

Heterostructures Stimulate Electric-Field to Facilitate Optimal Zn2+ Intercalation in MoS2 Cathode.

The electric-field effect is an important factor to enhance the charge diffusion and transfer kinetics of interfacial electrode materials. Herein, by designing a heterojunction, the influence of the electric-field effect on the kinetics of the MoS2 as cathode materials for aqueous Zn-ion batteries (AZIBs) is deeply investigated. The hybrid heterojunction is developed by hydrothermal growth of MoS2 nanosheets on robust titanium-based transition metal compound ([titanium nitride, TiN] and [titanium oxide, TiO2 ]) nanowires, denoted TNC@MoS2 and TOC@MoS2 NWS, respectively. Benefiting from the het

Brain mapping of auditory hallucinations and illusions induced by direct intracortical electrical stimulation.

BACKGROUND: The exact architecture of the human auditory cortex remains a subject of debate, with discrepancies between functional and microstructural studies. In a hierarchical framework for sensory perception, simple sound perception is expected to take place in the primary auditory cortex, while the processing of complex, or more integrated perceptions is proposed to rely on associative and higher-order cortices. OBJECTIVES: We hypothesize that auditory symptoms induced by direct electrical stimulation (DES) offer a window into the architecture of the brain networks involved in auditory ha

Blood Flow Restricted Electrical Stimulations to Prevent or Attenuate Symptoms of Muscle Damage.

The objective of this study was to determine if performing electrical stimulations (E-STIM) under blood flow restriction (BFR) would result in a greater protective effect against symptoms of muscle damage. 18 individuals (9 females) completed a damaging bout of exercise followed by a low frequency E-STIM treatment protocol on both arms, one of which was completed under BFR. The treatment protocol was then repeated 24-hours post-exercise. There were main effects of time for muscle thickness (pre: 3.5 cm; 48 h post: 3.8 cm; BF10 = 88.476), discomfort (pre: 0.0 au; 48 h post: 4.2 au; BF10 = 241.9

Mentalizing with the future: Electrical stimulation of the right TPJ increases sustainable decision-making.

While many people acknowledge the urgency to drastically change our consumption patterns to mitigate climate change, most people fail to live sustainably. We hypothesized that a lack of sustainability stems from insufficient intergenerational mentalizing (i.e., taking the perspective of people in the future). To causally test our hypothesis, we applied high-definition transcranial direct current stimulation (HD-tDCS) to the temporo-parietal junction (TPJ). We tested participants twice (receiving stimulation at the TPJ or the vertex as control), while they engaged in a behavioral economic parad

Electrical stimulation of the nucleus basalis of meynert: a systematic review of preclinical and clinical data.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the nucleus basalis of Meynert (NBM) has been clinically investigated in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Lewy body dementia (LBD). However, the clinical effects are highly variable, which questions the suggested basic principles underlying these clinical trials. Therefore, preclinical and clinical data on the design of NBM stimulation experiments and its effects on behavioral and neurophysiological aspects are systematically reviewed here. Animal studies have shown that electrical stimulation of the NBM enhanced cognition, increased the release of acetylcholine, en

Transcutaneous sacral electrical stimulation versus oxibutynin for the treatment of overactive bladder in children.

BACKGROUND: Nowadays there is still no ideal treatment for paediatric overactive bladder. Initial management measures (urotherapy and constipation control), resolve 40% of cases. The second line of treatment in overactive bladder is anticholinergic drugs, above all oxybutynin. Although most patients improve with these therapies, the complete resolution rate is around 30-40%. Sacral transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation has recently emerged as a new alternative in the management of patients with refractory paediatric overactive bladder. However, only a few studies have been done to compar

Effects of Acute Microcurrent Electrical Stimulation on Muscle Function and Subsequent Recovery Strategy.

Microcurrent electrical neuromuscular stimulation (MENS) is believed to alter blood flow, increasing cutaneous blood perfusion, with vasodilation and hyperemia. According to these physiological mechanisms, we investigated the short-term effects of MENS on constant-load exercise and the subsequent recovery process. Ten healthy subjects performed, on separate days, constant-load cycling, which was preceded and followed by active or inactive stimulation to the right quadricep. Blood lactate, pulmonary oxygen, and muscle deoxyhemoglobin on-transition kinetics were recorded. Hemodynamic parameters,

Pudendal Nerve Block by Low-Frequency (≤1 kHz) Biphasic Electrical Stimulation.

OBJECTIVES: To test the hypothesis that poststimulation block of nerve conduction can be achieved by low-frequency (≤1 kHz) biphasic stimulation (LFBS). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A tripolar cuff electrode was placed around the pudendal nerve in cats to deliver LFBS (1 kHz, 500 Hz, and 100 Hz). Two bipolar hook electrodes were placed central and distal to the cuff electrode to induce external urethral sphincter (EUS) contractions. A catheter was inserted into the urethra to record EUS contraction pressure. Pudendal nerve block by LFBS was confirmed by the failure of the central hook electrode sti
