The relationships between HIV stigma, emotional status, and emotional regulation among HIV-affected children in rural China.

Children affected by HIV/AIDS have unique psychosocial needs that often go unaddressed in traditional treatment approaches. They are more li … ediation model. We found that the experience of HIV stigma had a direct positive effect on negative emotions among children affected by HIV. Emotional regulation offers a level of protection, as it mediated the impact of HIV stigma on negative emotions. Moreover, age was found to moderate the relationship between perceived stigma and negative emotions. A s …

A systematic review of the emotional, behavioural and cognitive features exhibited by school-aged children experiencing neglect or emotional abuse.

BACKGROUND: Interventions to minimize the long-term consequences of neglect or emotional abuse rely on prompt identification of these children. This systematic review of world literature (1947-2012) identifies features that children aged 5-14 years experiencing neglect or emotional abuse, as opposed to physical or sexual abuse, may exhibit. METHODS: Searching 18 databases, utilizing over 100 keywords, supplemented by hand searching, 13,210 articles were identified and 111 underwent full critical appraisal by two independent trained reviewers. RESULTS: The 30 included studies highlighted beha

The cognitive building blocks of emotion regulation: ability to update working memory moderates the efficacy of rumination and reappraisal on emotion.

The ability to regulate emotions is a critical component of healthy emotional functioning. Therefore, it is important to determine factors that contribute to the efficacy of emotion regulation. The present article examined whether the ability to update emotional information in working memory is a predictor of the efficacy of rumination and reappraisal on affective experience both at the trait level (Study 1) and in daily life (Study 2). In both studies, results revealed that the relationship between use of reappraisal and high arousal negative emotions was moderated by updating ability. Specif…

Hostility, emotional expression, and hemodynamic responses to laboratory stressors: reactivity attenuating effects of a tendency to express emotion interpersonally.

The present study examined the interactive effects of hostility and a predisposition towards emotional expression or suppression in interpersonal situations. We also attempted to partially replicate findings from a recent investigation which provided evidence of lower myocardial and greater vascular responses in high-hostile relative to low-hostile individuals. Undergraduate students (n=99) participated in a protocol consisting of rest periods, speech preparation and presentation, a social-evaluative mental arithmetic task, and a stress interview. After classifying participants into high/low h

Verbal abuse from outsiders versus insiders: comparing frequency, impact on emotional exhaustion, and the role of emotional labor.

Research on aggression from organizational outsiders (customers, clients or patients) has ignored insider-instigated aggression, and has been limited to employees in emotional labor jobs (e.g., social work and customer services). The authors argue that customer-employee interactions have distinct characteristics from organizational insider interactions, and provide two studies to compare the frequency and strain of verbal abuse from customers, supervisors and coworkers. Furthermore, they assess whether customer verbal abuse is only a critical issue for employees in jobs requiring emotional lab

Display rules versus display autonomy: emotion regulation, emotional exhaustion, and task performance in a call center simulation.

"Service with a smile" is satisfying for the customer, but such display rules may be costly to the employee and the organization. Most previous research on such costs has used self-reported and cross-sectional designs. The authors use an experimental approach to test tenets of resource depletion theories; specifically, whether the self-regulation of emotions required by display rules depletes energy and attentional resources during a service encounter. Using a call center simulation with three "customer" interactions, the authors found that participants given positive display rules (e.g., be e…

Listen to my play: Decoding the narratives and emotions of sexually abused children through a mixed-methods approach.

BACKGROUND: Child sexual abuse (CSA) is a prevalent yet underreported problem, and reliable tools for assessing its psychological impact in children remain limited. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop narrative story stems, identify core themes in children's narratives, develop an emotion-recording checklist, and compare emotional expressions between sexually abused and non-abused children. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: The study included 90 children aged 4-9 years living in Tehran, Iran. The quantitative phase included 30 sexually abused and 60 non-abused children. The qualitative phase incl

Breaking the vicious cycle: a bibliometric and visual analysis of the bidirectional relationship between pruritus and negative emotions.

BACKGROUND: Pruritus is a common skin symptom, frequently associated with substantial psychological burden. Recent advances in neuroscience and clinical practice suggest a clinically significant reciprocal association between chronic pruritus and negative emotions (e.g., anxiety and depression), moving beyond simple models of causality. Despite increasing research interest, this interdisciplinary field still lacks a comprehensive bibliometric overview. Therefore, this study aims to systematically visualize the research landscape and identify emerging hotspots, underexplored areas, and translat…

The Influence of Attributions, Emotions, and Sexual Health Knowledge on Support Provision to Friends with Sexual Health Uncertainties.

When experiencing sexual health uncertainties, emerging adults often rely on friends for support; however, the support provided is not always helpful. This study situates support in response to uncertainty within appraisal and attribution theories to explain nurturant, informational, and tangible support provision. Study 1 coded 441 participants' responses to open-ended questions about a recent conversation about a friend's sexual health uncertainty. It revealed that stability and responsibility attributions were made, and fear was the most common emotion described. Desire to provide support a

A new hope or phantom menace? Exploring climate emotions and public support for climate interventions across 30 countries.

Emotions are central to human experiences of climate change. Empirical research demonstrates their importance for climate perceptions and climate-related behaviors. The intensifying severity of climate change prompts consideration of emerging, potentially controversial technologies. Alongside mitigation and adaptation, climate intervention proposes to remove carbon dioxide from ambient air (carbon dioxide removal, CDR) or reflect sunlight away from the Earth (solar radiation modification, SRM). Although such options arouse emotional reactions of diverse kinds, the intersection between climate …

Domestication constrains the ability of dogs to convey emotions via facial expressions in comparison to their wolf ancestors.

Dogs (Canis lupus familiaris) are the domestically bred descendant of wolves (Canis lupus). However, selective breeding has profoundly altered facial morphologies of dogs compared to their wolf ancestors. We demonstrate that these morphological differences limit the abilities of dogs to successfully produce the same affective facial expressions as wolves. We decoded facial movements of captive wolves during social interactions involving nine separate affective states. We used linear discriminant analyses to predict affective states based on combinations of facial movements. The resulting confu

A commentary on Perlstein et al. (2023): the past and future of treating youth with limited prosocial emotions.

Perlstein, Fair, Hong, and Waller (Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, 2023) meta-analysis provides a critically important summary of the research on the treatment of children and adolescents with elevated callous-unemotional (CU) traits, 10 years after they were added to diagnostic criteria in the "with Limited Prosocial Emotions" specifier for conduct disorder. Their meta-analysis provides clear and convincing evidence that many treatments that reduce conduct problems in youth are also effective for children with elevated CU traits. However, their findings also indicate that CU trait…
