Improvements in Body Composition after a Proposed Anti-Inflammatory Diet Are Modified by Employment Status in Weight-Stable Patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis, a Randomized Controlled Crossover Trial.

Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease affecting peripheral joints. Chronic activation of inflammatory pathways results in decreased function and the development of comorbidities, such as loss of lean mass while retaining total body mass. The objective of this report was to assess whether dietary manipulation affects body composition in patients with RA as a secondary outcome. Fifty patients were included in a randomized controlled crossover trial testing a proposed anti-inflammatory Mediterranean-style diet compared to a Western diet. Body composition was measured by bioelectrical

Microenterprise Intervention to Reduce Sexual Risk Behaviors and Increase Employment and HIV Preventive Practices Among Economically-Vulnerable African-American Young Adults (EMERGE): A Feasibility Randomized Clinical Trial.

Economic vulnerability, such as homelessness and unemployment, contributes to HIV risk among U.S. racial minorities. Yet, few economic-strengthening interventions have been adapted for HIV prevention in this population. This study assessed the feasibility of conducting a randomized clinical trial of a 20-week microenterprise intervention for economically-vulnerable African-American young adults. Engaging MicroenterprisE for Resource Generation and Health Empowerment (EMERGE) aimed to reduce sexual risk behaviors and increase employment and uptake of HIV preventive behaviors. The experimental g…

Is maternal employment site a source of exposure misclassification in studies of environmental exposures and birth outcomes? A simulation-based bias analysis of haloacetic acids in tap water and hypospadias.

UNLABELLED: In population research, exposure to environmental contaminants is often indirectly assessed by linking residence to geocoded databases of environmental exposures. We explored the potential for misclassification of residence-based environmental exposure as a result of not accounting for the workplace environments of employed pregnant women using data from a National Birth Defects Prevention Study (NBDPS) analysis of drinking water haloacetic acids and hypospadias. METHODS: The original analysis used NBDPS data from women with haloacetic acid exposure information in eight states who

"I Put a Lot of Emphasis on Work Because I Want to Keep My Job": A Population-Based Interview Study of Long Covid and Employment Changes in England.

BACKGROUND: Long Covid is a complex condition characterised by persistent multisystemic symptoms following a Covid-19 infection, which can influence an individual's capability to sustain employment. However, there is limited evidence of how diverse presentations of long Covid can shape employment and what support strategies might be useful for different groups. AIM: To address this, we aimed to explore the experiences of employment changes among people living with long Covid in England and to identify the perceived barriers and enablers they face to cope with work. DESIGN AND METHODS: We con…

'Yes, I've got the job, but my challenge is keeping the job': an evaluation of a new pathway to open employment to meet the needs of people with acquired brain injury in Australia.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: In Australia, people with disability continue to experience low employment rates (48%), compared to the national average (79%), and employment is even lower (30%) for people with acquired brain injury (ABI). This paper evaluates a pilot study of a new mainstream employment pathway following ABI, called Employment CoLab. METHOD: Employment CoLab was piloted across multiple industries using a mix of reasonable employer adjustments, insurance-funded supports and/or access to capacity-building supports. Semi-structured interviews were undertaken with four stakeholders; …

Developing a Health Equity and Criminal Justice Concentration for a Master of Public Health (MPH) Program: Results From a Needs Assessment Among Community Partners and Potential Employers.

The United States has experienced a 4-fold increase in jail and prison populations over the last 40 years, disproportionately burdening African American and Hispanic/Latinx communities. Mass incarceration threatens the health of individuals, families, and communities, and requires a public health response. The Master of Public Health (MPH) Program at Touro University California (TUC) trains students to become skillful, socially-conscious public health professionals. We are developing a concentration focused on the public health impacts of incarceration. Along with the core public health curric

Characterizing tuberculosis diagnosis and the associations with economic instability and employment discrimination among women living with HIV across 11 countries in sub-Saharan Africa: a cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: Tuberculosis (TB) is the leading cause of death among people living with HIV. Global estimates among people living with HIV demonstrate that more incident cases and more deaths due to TB occur among women than men. Simultaneously, women experience higher levels of under and unpaid work compared to men. Given that poverty is an established determinant for TB, the aim of this study is to characterize the role of HIV-related employment discrimination and legal protections on TB outcomes for women living with HIV. METHODS: The People Living with HIV Stigma Index 2.0 study was implem…

"If you want to work, let's work out how to make this happen": An interpretive description study of occupational therapists' perspectives of supporting young adults experiencing psychosis with their employment.

INTRODUCTION: Young adults experiencing psychosis want to work but most of them do not, even though success in employment and careers is possible. Occupational therapists are ideally placed to support young adults experiencing psychosis with employment, but evidence on contemporary occupational therapy practice in this area is lacking. This study asked occupational therapists who work with young people experiencing psychosis to share their perspectives about employment support. METHOD: An interpretive description study design was used with data collected through a focus group of expert inform…

Protocol of a randomized controlled trial on the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of the PLACES intervention: a supported employment intervention aimed at enhancing work participation of unemployed and/or work-disabled cancer survivors.

BACKGROUND: Approximately onethird of cancer survivors encounter challenges reintegrating into the workforce, often experiencing involuntary unemployment and/or partial or full work disability following diagnosis and treatment. Returning to paid employment presents evident challenges due to uncertainties regarding work ability, perceived employer discrimination, and a lack of support, thereby risking social exclusion. However, interventions addressing return to paid employment among unemployed and/or work-disabled cancer survivors are scarce. Here, we describe the protocol of a randomized cont…

Protocol for a mixed-methods longitudinal study to identify factors influencing return to work in the over 50s participating in the UK Work Programme: Supporting Older People into Employment (SOPIE).

INTRODUCTION: Increasing employment among older workers is a policy priority given the increase in life expectancy and the drop in labour force participation after the age of 50. Reasons for this drop are complex but include poor health, age discrimination, inadequate skills/qualifications and caring roles; however, limited evidence exists on how best to support this group back to work. The Work Programme is the UK Government's flagship policy to facilitate return to work (RTW) among those at risk of long-term unemployment. 'Supporting Older People Into Employment' (SOPIE) is a mixed-methods l…

[Old, sick, unemployed, without a chance? Results of a randomised controlled trial of the effects of a combined health and employment promotion program for the older long-term unemployed (AmigA-M)].

Illness can be the cause and consequence of unemployment. These relationships are well documented but only few data on the effectiveness of interventions are available. The study examines the effectiveness of a combined health and employment promotion intervention (AmigA - currently projected in several sites in Germany) for the older long-term unemployed with the main goals of an improvement of health and integrability as well as sustainable reintegration into the labour market. The evaluation design is a randomised controlled trial with a multi-method approach. A total of 71 participants cou…

Patterns and predictors of employer risk-reduction activities (ERRAs) in response to a work-related upper extremity cumulative trauma disorder (UECTD): reports from workers' compensation claimants.

BACKGROUND: Despite being preventable, work-related upper extremity cumulative trauma disorders (UECTDs) remain problematic. This study is unique in its focus on predictors of employer risk-reduction activities (ERRAs) in response to a UECTD case. METHODS: Workers' compensation claimants (N = 537) completed a telephone survey about employer risk-reduction activities, workplace characteristics, safety programs, and physician recommendations for job modifications. RESULTS: Only 52% of respondents reported employer actions to investigate or reduce UECTD risk. Engineering and pace changes were p
