ON THE EPIDEMIOLOGY OF COMPLICATED VIVAX MALRIA.

A larger number of publications on cases of. complicated vivax malaria in the world literature can be. explained by a set of diffeetit faciors'. There has been unification of the definition of complicated tertian malaria allowing ihe clinical nianagement of a patient and the reporting of complicated cases of P.vivax to be improved. The, epidemiological characteristics of complicated vivax malaria are determined by a diversity of geographical, races, variants, gentyies and phenotypes of tertian malaia due to intensive internal and external migration. LIVER FIBROSIS IN COMBINED COURSE OF CHRONIC HEPATITIS C AND HIV INFECTION.

The urgency of the problem connected with HIV infection and parenteral forms of viral hepatitis largely stems from common epidemiological, social and economic indices. HIV infection accelerates progression of liver disease associated with HCV infection, especially in patients with more severe immunodeficiency. The aim of the study was to compare results of liver elastometry in patients co-infected with HIV/CHC and those monoinfected with CHC. Verification of the diagnosis was carried out on the basis of clinical-anamnestic data, by taking into account the epidemiological history of patients an

The relative frequency of lysosomal storage disorders: a medical genetics referral laboratory's experience from India.

Lysosomal storage disorders are a group of rare, genetically inherited metabolic disorders. Because the literature on epidemiologic data is scanty from India, we attempted to determine their relative frequency and regional distribution. Our retrospective study included 1558 patients with clinical suspicion of various lysosomal storage disorders referred to Sandor Lifesciences Pvt Ltd during 2007 to 2012. About 30% of the cases were tested positive, with sphingolipidoses as the most common subgroup, followed by mucopolysaccharidoses, and Gaucher disease as the most frequently occurring individu

[Epidemiological alertness as a component of the malaria surveillance system].

Malaria vigilance is a continuation of the functions of the malaria surveillance system in the countries that have achieved malaria elimination on their territories. The main function of the malaria vigilance during the post-elimination period is a continuous monitoring and evaluation and implementation of necessary prevention measures against the possible re-establishment of local malaria transmission due to the importation of malaria from its endemic countries by residents and/or migrants. Various epidemiological aspects of malaria vigilance, such as standard identification of a malaria case

[Noroviruses: leading cause of gastroenteritis].

Although noroviruses were the first viral agents to be linked to gastrointestinal disease, they were long considered a secondary cause far behind rotaviruses. Development of molecular-based diagnostic techniques has provided clearer insight into the epidemiological impact of noroviruses that are now recognized not only as the leading cause of non-bacterial gastroenteritis outbreaks but also as an important cause of sporadic gastroenteritis in both children and adults. Norovirus infection is generally characterized by mild acute vomiting and diarrhea usually lasting for only a few days, but it

Leptospirosis in Germany, 1962-2003.

Epidemiologic trends of human leptospirosis in Germany were investigated by analyzing national surveillance data from 1962 to 2003 and by conducting a questionnaire-based survey from 1997 to 2000. After a steady decrease of leptospirosis incidence from 1962 to 1997, surveillance data indicate an increase in disease incidence to 0.06 per 100,000 (1998-2003). Of 102 laboratory-confirmed cases in humans from 1997 to 2000, 30% were related to occupational exposures. Recreational exposures were reported in 30% (including traveling abroad in 16%), whereas residential exposure accounted for 37% of th

Carotenoids: separation methods applicable to biological samples.

Epidemiologic and clinical studies have shown that a high intake of vegetables and fruit, with consequently high intakes and circulating concentrations of carotenoids, is associated with reduced risk of cardiovascular and other chronic diseases. The antioxidant properties of carotenoids are thought to contribute to these effects. The analysis of carotenoids in plasma, foods and tissues has thus become of interest in studies examining the role of diet in chronic disease prevention and management. High-performance liquid chromatography with ultra-violet or photodiode array detection is most ofte

Genetic analysis of susceptibility to infection with Ascaris lumbricoides.

Epidemiologic studies of helminthic infections have shown that susceptibility to these parasites frequently aggregates in families, suggesting the possible involvement of genetic factors. This paper presents a genetic epidemiologic analysis of Ascaris lumbricoides infection in the Jirel population of eastern Nepal. A total of 1,261 individuals belonging to a single pedigree were assessed for intensity of Ascaris infection at two time points. Following an initial assessment in which all individuals were treated with albendazole, a follow-up examination was performed one year later to evaluate r

Local transmission of Plasmodium vivax malaria in Singapore.

A localised outbreak involving 19 cases and two carriers of vivax malaria was reported at Dairy Farm from May to June 1996. Epidemiological investigations showed that the outbreak was caused by the introduction of two foreign workers with imported relapsing vivax malaria into this malaria-receptive area. Transmission of infection occurred amongst 17 other foreign workers residing in the locality and two local residents staying at a condominium nearby. The outbreak was rapidly brought under control through active case finding, isolation and treatment of infected persons, epidemic vector control

Prevalence, incidence, risk factors, and outcomes of pressure injuries in patients receiving extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO): A systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Pressure injury is a common, preventable harm in critically ill patients, yet its burden among those receiving extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) remains poorly quantified. We aimed to synthesize the prevalence and incidence of PI in ECMO-supported patients, analyzed separately by epidemiological measure, and to summarize associated factors and clinical outcomes. METHODS: We systematically searched five bibliographic databases (PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, and CINAHL), supplemented by ProQuest and Google Scholar, for observational studies reporting pressure in

Brazil was certified by the World Health Organization for having eliminated lymphatic filariasis: what now?

Lymphatic filariasis (LF) is a debilitating and stigmatizing disease. In Brazil, the disease has been the target of control and elimination strategies for more than 25 years. Recently, the country received the certificate of elimination of LF as a public health problem. In this post-elimination moment, the question arises: what now? Given the possibility of emergence and reemergence of the disease, it is important that epidemiological surveillance measures are reviewed and applied effectively.

Chikungunya in the Caribbean: An Epidemic in the Making.

Chikungunya is a mosquito-borne virus that has shown increased prevalence in the Caribbean since October 2013. There have been several outbreaks throughout Asian and African countries over the past few decades with global travel and tourism having a major impact on the further spread of this disease. Improved policies and practices for preventative measures and epidemiological surveillance must be implemented to prevent the continued transmission of chikungunya.

[Postural kyphosis and morbus Scheuermann].

Scheuermann's kyphosis is the most frequent structural kyphosis in adolescents. There are gaps in the knowledge of epidemiology, aetiology and treatment. There are strong genetic and mechanical factors in the aetiology. Treatment options depend on the cobb's angle measured and the skeletal maturity. Training and brace treatment yield good results for milder curves, while surgical correction is the most effective for severe curves > 70°. Indications for surgery are subject of debate as complications are not uncommon.

[The importance of prevention and management for infectious abdominal aortic aneurysm].

Infectious abdominal aortic aneurysm (IAAA) arises from the combined effects of aortic wall degeneration, immune dysregulation, and microbial invasion. The widespread adoption of endovascular aortic repair (EVAR) has increased the proportion of iatrogenic and occult cases, leading to shifts in epidemiological patterns. Diagnosis requires an integrated assessment of clinical manifestations, inflammatory markers, microbiological evidence, and imaging findings from CT angiography and PET-CT; molecular pathogen detection techniques can further enhance diagnostic accuracy. Treatment centers on anti

Klebsiella genus as driver of human disease: from infections to non-communicable disorders.

Klebsiella spp. are pathobionts associated with acute infections, including pneumonia and infections in the urinary tract and bloodstream, often acquired in health-care settings. They represent a global threat owing to the prevalence of multidrug-resistant strains. Moreover, Klebsiella spp., similarly to other members of the human gut microbiota, can contribute to the pathogenesis of non-communicable disorders. In this Review, we describe the taxonomical and molecular characteristics of the Klebsiella genus, as well as its epidemiology and impact as an infectious agent. We also review current

Maternal diabetes programs sexually dimorphic early-onset cardiovascular dysfunction in metabolically healthy offspring.

The incidence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in young individuals is increasing. This alarming trend underscores the need to identify at-risk groups for preventive measures. Emerging evidence suggests that maternal diabetes increases the risk for metabolic diseases and early-onset CVDs in their offspring. However, the evidence is largely observational, limited by confounding factors, and lacks crucial mechanistic insight. Here, we combine experimental, epidemiological, and clinical approaches to disentangle the effects of maternal diabetes on offspring metabolism and endothelial function. In

Sustainability of Italian seaports located near contaminated sites: results of an exploratory analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Ports are strategic areas of economic importance, but they are also very critical contexts. Many Italian ports are included in contaminated sites of concern for remediation, with the presence of pressure factors that overload the burden capacity of local ecosystems and communities. AIM: The aim of this study is to characterize Italian seaport areas through a general theoretical path on the theme of ports-sustainability-local communities, identifying the ports located in municipalities included in contaminated sites studied by the SENTIERI Project (Epidemiological Study of Reside

Review on Main Arboviruses Circulating on French Guiana, An Ultra-Peripheric European Region in South America.

French Guiana (FG), a French overseas territory in South America, is susceptible to tropical diseases, including arboviruses. The tropical climate supports the proliferation and establishment of vectors, making it difficult to control transmission. In the last ten years, FG has experienced large outbreaks of imported arboviruses such as Chikungunya and Zika, as well as endemic arboviruses such as dengue, Yellow fever, and Oropouche virus. Epidemiological surveillance is challenging due to the differing distributions and behaviors of vectors. This article aims to summarize the current knowledge

Burkholderia pseudomallei and melioidosis.

Burkholderia pseudomallei, the causative agent of melioidosis, is found in soil and water of tropical and subtropical regions globally. Modelled estimates of the global burden predict that melioidosis remains vastly under-reported, and a call has been made for it to be recognized as a neglected tropical disease by the World Health Organization. Severe weather events and environmental disturbance are associated with increased case numbers, and it is anticipated that, in some regions, cases will increase in association with climate change. Genomic epidemiological investigations have confirmed B.
